1 The Blue Jackal Warm Up Different animals make different sounds. Match the names of the animals with the sounds they make in the table below. Discuss your answers in the class and score yourself. lion trumpets elephant caws cock bleats crow roars sheep howls jackal crows Reading Many years ago there lived a wicked jackal deep inside a jungle. One day he was very hungry but couldn’t find any food. He reached a nearby village looking for food. There a pack of dogs came barking at him. They tried to chase him away. The jackal ran fast to save his life. He jumped through an open window into a washerman’s house and down he fell into a big vat of blue dye! The jackal stayed hidden in the house until dawn. He quietly escaped to the jungle before the sun rose. He was thirsty, so he went to the river to have some water. He was surprised to see his reflection in the river. He looked so strange! His entire body was dyed in blue colour. 1 Ascend G2 English MCB Part 1.indb 1 7/19/2023 7:50:01 PM

All the animals at the river started to run away from him. They were scared of him. The jackal heard them say, “Dear me! He’s so strange! What could his secret be? We must stay away from him.” Seeing the animals run away, the jackal said in a loud, throaty voice, “Friends, do not be afraid. Lord Brahma, the Lord of all creations, has made me Himself. He has sent me to become your king, look after you, and protect you from all dangers.” Finally the animals made up their minds to have the jackal as their king. They surrounded him and said, “O Master, we await your commands. What can we do for you? Please tell us.’’ The ‘blue’ jackal then made the lion and the tiger important ministers of his kingdom. The elephant was made the doorkeeper and the donkey was to make the big announcements. He gave important roles to every animal in the jungle. They were mostly about how to serve him. But he did not have anything to do with the other jackals and did not want them to come near him. He feared that they might find out who he was. So, he asked them to be chased out of the jungle and said that they were never to be allowed in again. The animals would hunt food for him every day and bring it to him. He divided the food among all of them after keeping his own share. This went on for many months. But one evening, when the ‘blue’ jackal was addressing other animals, he heard a pack of jackals howling at a distance. Unable to control himself, he sat up and began to howl. 2 The Blue Jackal Ascend G2 English MCB Part 1.indb 2 7/19/2023 7:50:03 PM

When the lion and the other animals heard it, they understood that their king was just an ordinary jackal. They said to each other angrily, “This jackal has fooled us. We will not let him live in our jungle anymore. He should be punished.” He was then chased out of the jungle and never allowed to set foot there again. 2 The Silly Donkey Warm Up Which of these words do you usually use to describe a donkey? Circle them. Discuss your answers in the class. hard-working clever foolish obedient lazy loyal Reading Once upon a time, there lived a merchant. He brought goods from the town market and sold them in his village shop. He sold all kinds of things — food items, cloth, soaps, and other grocery. He travelled many miles to pick up the goods and bring them to his shop. The merchant had a donkey. He would put his goods on the donkey’s back and the two of them would walk the distance. The donkey often got tired with the burden on his back. His legs became sore with pain, but he still followed his master. One day the merchant put four sacks of salt on the donkey’s back. It was a hot day and the load was too much for him to carry. After travelling a small distance, the donkey got quite tired and thirsty. He soon saw a stream and decided to walk up to it to drink water. However, the banks of the river were 10 Ascend G2 English MCB Part 1.indb 10 7/19/2023 7:50:09 PM

slippery, and he fell into the water. Scared that he would drown with the load on his back, the donkey started to throw his legs and wail loudly. Suddenly a strange thing happened. The load on his back started to disappear. He was very happy and swam back. He didn’t realize that the salt in the sacks had mixed with the water and that was how the load had vanished. On seeing the empty sacks, the master became very angry. He said, “You silly donkey. Don’t ever go near the stream if you have a load on your back.” The next day, the merchant put a load of cotton cloth on the back of the donkey. The donkey thought, “This is my chance to be free! Yay! I’ll play the same trick again. Let me quickly get into the stream.” He again went to the stream to drink water and pretended that he had slipped into the stream. But this time, the cloth soaked the water and the sacks became very heavy. The merchant heard the cries of the donkey. He rushed to the stream. Seeing the donkey sink, he shouted, “Why did you go into the stream with those bags of cotton cloth? How silly can you be? Wait. I’ll pull you out.” The merchant somehow helped the donkey to climb up to the bank. But the donkey had learnt a lesson. He promised never to disobey his master again. 4 Henry Saves Little Rabbit Warm Up Have you ever seen a scarecrow in a field? Why do you think the farmer puts a scarecrow in his field? Draw a scarecrow here. Reading Little Rabbit wanted to step out of his hole in Mary’s garden. He popped his head out and felt delighted about the sun on the dewy grass. Rabbit hopped out of his hole, looked here and there, and then ran wild into the forest. He ran across the deep dark forest faster than the monkey blinks. He was having fun—lots of fun! 21 Ascend G2 English MCB Part 1.indb 21 7/19/2023 7:50:32 PM

He soon got into Frank’s farm. Frank was a wheat farmer. He had sown miles of wheat in his huge farm. Rabbit was looking for some carrot, but he could not find any carrot in the farm. He was hungry and sleepy. He was also very thirsty. He drank some water from the water pipe on the farm. Soon it was dark and Rabbit fell asleep. He woke up in the morning hungry and tired. He did not feel good anymore. He wanted to go back to his hole where Papa Rabbit and Mama Rabbit were waiting for him. But Rabbit had forgotten his way back home. Soon he saw someone standing next to him. Was that a young man? No, he was not a young man. Was that Frank the Farmer? No, he was not Frank the Farmer. Who was he? He was Henry the Scarecrow! Why was he there? He was there to help Rabbit get home. Soon, Henry and Rabbit flew up in the sky. Rabbit could not fly, but Henry could fly. Rabbit held Henry tight as they flew over farms and forests. Henry showed Rabbit cranes flying like planes. Henry asked Rabbit, “What are those?” Rabbit said, “Those are aeroplanes.” Henry said, “No, those are not aeroplanes. Those are cranes. They are flying home in the evening.” Everything looked so small from the sky. Houses were small, people were small, and even the mountains were small! Soon Rabbit and Henry came near Rabbit’s home in Mary’s garden. Henry flew down to her garden. Mary was playing in her garden. Henry asked, “Who is she?” Rabbit said, “This is Mary. She plays with me. Mary, this is Henry. He flew me back home.’’ Mary was very happy to have Rabbit back.
