It was early in the morning. Os 422 soldadinhos de chumbo do senhor general The factory workers were going to the factories; the secre- taries to their offices; the children to the schools. Everyone was in a hurry. The three brothers were scared by the noi- ses of the cars in the street and the people walking by the si- dewalk. They were not used to this inside the black steel box next to the General’s coat. At their house the silence prevailed. They stood in front of the house at the door step for a while, impressed by what they saw and heard. - Let´s go! We have a mission: we need to find out why men make war… - said João Calado. - And also to find a quiet place for our 419 companions. - ad- ded João Metido. At that moment an old lady showed up holding a huge shopping bag. She must be going to the market at this time. That was the conclusion made by João Calado. For him, the reason why there were wars was the food. The people and the countries started wars to get food. The old lady was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn’t no- tice the three tin soldiers at first. What was she thinking about? In her birds? Certainly not, when we think about birds, we don’t look so sad. Maybe it was something that made her thoughtful when she walked by the general’s house. - Look, tin soldiers! Who lost them? Well, maybe they belong to the General. I wouldn’t be surprised by that. I’ll ring the doorbell. - said the Lady.

O Início de uma Mudança36 The three squirmed with the idea of going back to the box. They would have lost an entire day! But then the Lady thought again. - It is better not to… - she whispered. - It is still early and maybe he will get angry if I wake him up because of three tin soldiers. Maybe he doesn’t even want them anymore and I need to go to the market. It’s better if I leave them here. She left the tin soldiers on the place she found them. However, not knowing how, slipped into the old lady’s bag. She continued her walk, carrying the soldier with her. - What beautiful and colorful soldiers. – said the old Lady to herself while she conti- nued walking. - Many years ago I also had a beautiful and colorful soldier in front of me. He walked straight, his boots were always shinning and one day he had to leave for the war. And then he was gone, my husband. He went and never came back. A while later I received a note instead of my husband… now all I have are my memories. The tin soldier got really sad after listening to that from inside the bag. He started to think that he was right by saying that men make war, fight and die for food. more and more there won’t be food for everyone in the world. They were almost at the market. A crowd of people, stands, sounds, smells, colors, all mixed together. João Calado hid himself in a part of the bag where he could see it all but no one could see him. He was amazed by the amount and diversity of food. there was a little bit of everything. And the most astonishing thing was that a lot of food was going to waste, being thrown away. - No! - He said to himself - Food is not the problem! That’s not the reason people kill or die for. There is enough to feed many people. João calado was inside the bag trying not to be smashed by the potatoes and the cabbage that had been added to the bag. On the way back from the market João Calado found the other two soldiers who were waiting anxiously for him. The first thing he said: - No one can say that the wars are cause by food. I’ve seen leftovers. Certainly there is a lot of food being pro- duced around the world… - he said all at once so he wouldn’t forget or be questioned by his brothers that for sure wanted to know more details. João Espichado remembered the other mission and said: - Let’s go! We need to find a place where we can live without a war every seven days.
