PFrroinmciTpahle’s Desk 1 So, we begin a new year and a new term, where many of us will have made resolutions to make some changes to our lives that will have a positive impact on 2A0d2m0i-s2s0io2n1s 2 those around us and on ourselves; I know I certainly have! For our students in Year 11, the year starts with their mock examinations and I am Science Fair 3 sure you would join me in wishing them every success, both in these examinations YSeeravric8eSenegal 4-6 and the rest of the academic year. Success, however, can be defined in many ways and Learning this is a discussion for another time. However, I am sure if we had to define success and in particular how a person would become successful, ‘practice’ and ‘repetition’ ARertsuClotsmpetition 7-13 could be words used in our explanation. The quote is ‘the harder I practice the luckier I get’, has been attributed to a number Staff - Only Day 14 -22 of golfers including Gary Player and Arnold Palmer, to name only two. This quote has always been an inspiration for me in both my personal and professional life. The Ski & 23 - 30 idea that the harder I work at something the luckier I get can and has been viewed in a Educational number of ways and perhaps the most apt version for us in school is ‘the more I study Trip to Europe the easier it gets’. This, therefore, is the interpretation that I ask all of our students, to read and adhere to Medical Corner 31 as the academic year progresses, making sure they stick to this new resolution! Kindest regards WAretieskts of the 32 - Mr. D. A. Williams (Principal) WQueoetkation of the 32 Something to 32 Think About

P A G E 4 YEAR 8 SENEGAL SERVICE LEARNING Our service-learning trip to the National Hospital was a great success. We choose to donate a decorated Christmas tree to the children’s clinic, and our Form group (Year 8 Senegal), picked the Pediatrics Ward in National Hospital, Abuja. We left the school at 3:15 pm arrived by 3:32 pm. Dr Maiyaki met us at the entrance of the main building and she accompanied us to the Pediatrics section where we met the Head of Pediatrics - Dr Mairami and Dr Nwokoro, a gynecologist. We were given a space at the ward in the corridor; the boys assembled the tree while the girls decorated it. The tree turned out to be very beautiful. We also brought gifts for the children and placed them in front of the Christmas tree, afterwards we took some photographs with the tree also at the Administrative block. At the end of the trip, the Public Relations Officer handed in some magazines to our Form Captain, Jeremy Iweze, and a vote of thanks was given by our Deputy Form Captain, Temilade Sanni. Finally, we made our way back to school and arrived at 5:00 pm. It was an experience never to be forgotten. -Tobechukwu Atuanya (Year 8 Senegal) Respect Responsibility Resourcefulness THE REGENT DIGEST VOLUME 8 ISSUE 15

PAGE 31 MEDICAL CORNER THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “BREAKFAST” & YOUR FIRST MEAL OF THE DAY We know breakfast as the most important meal of the day, and it truly is. But let’s break it down a bit more. BREAK-FAST. When we are sleeping our bodies are fasting so when we wake up we shouldn’t necessarily be eating a huge meal. We should be eating foods that are beneficial to breaking our fast. So if you don’t eat a heavy meal, what do you eat? Fruits! Between 7:00 am and 11:00 am the body is going through its heaviest detoxification, so eating fruit is going to further aid in that process. The Benefits of Eating Fruit for Breakfast Include:  Natural energy from natural sugars  Wakes the digestive system  The fibre in fruits aids in digestion Sugar from fruit brings alkalinity, vitality, and strength to the cells. It also cleanses the body and does not cause diabetes. In addition to fruit for breakfast, you should get in the habit of drinking lime water as well. Lime water improves digestion, boosts the immune system, removes mucus, rejuvenates the skin, and promotes weight loss. First Meal of the Day So after breakfast is when you should have your first meal of the day. This should happen around 11:00 am. Your first meal after breaking fast should be just as nutritious as fruit. Like oats and toasts. These meals are nutritious and help keep you fuller longer. This way of eating when you wake up is sure to boost energy levels, improve mood, promote weight loss, and improve sleep and mental clarity.
