Philomela Overview

Philomela is a California based design studio specializing in original, hand-drawn, painted and printed, expertly formatted patterns created by fine artist and psychoanalyst Bonnie Saland. These patterns are translated onto textiles, wallpapers, and home goods.

Design Studio Dual workshops amplify the natural/cultural, rural/urban mix revealing the shimmering energy of two delightfully different environments. The Sea Ranch Studio expands upon Northern California's sensuous natural abundance bringing a respectful stewardship of the land indoors. Equally influential is the vibrant eclectic culture of our L.A. based studio.

Whether working in journal format on the road, or in her California studio space, Saland paints, cuts, pastes, recycles and repeats, incorporating traditional patterning, abstraction, and the poetic use of color in an ongoing reconfiguration. The constant throughout is the articulation of a creative voice that honors pattern as a force for beauty, human understanding and healing.

The process involves extrapolating sections of the fine art work (mono prints for the “Finding Tahiti” collection below) and then digitally reproducing the image into textile repeats. From there, the patterns are reproduced on fabric, wallpaper and in a variety of product formats.

Philomela themes infuse interiors and exteriors with a liveliness and sense of deep connection. Our catalog of 300+ carefully constructed and unique patterns are now easily searchable on our website by both color and collection. A pattern card deck paired with a base ring is also available for your pattern play.
