From DRS (Admin) Desk What is a Conference? A conference is generally a meeting of several people to discuss a particular topic. Districts hold a conference for club members so they can learn about what's happening in Rotary/Rotaract and their district and meet and greet Rotarians and Rotaractors from other districts and clubs as well. Rotary International District 3250 is conducting it's 34th conference, Jamboree on 21st-22nd December at BNR Chanakya, Ranchi; with the similar intention. Why do you need to attend Conference? Rtr Surbhi More Self Development: The purpose of the conference is to provide an DRS (Admin), 2019-20 opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the RID 3250 social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations between all people between and within district through a framework of friendship and service. Networking: The purpose of the district conference is to provide opportunities for networking with Rotary and Rotaract leaders, inspirational addresses, and discussions of Rotaract-related matters. Rewards and Recognition: Conferences are a great platform to recognize the service programs, projects, and public relations achievements in the district in order to inspire Rotaractors to become more involved in service. In short, objective of the conference is to share ideas, celebrate ours and peers' accomplishments, and find out what has been happening in the clubs, districts and the world. What are the benefits being offered at Jamboree? 1. Conference will have fabulous key-note speakers from Rotary addressing the gathering and all of us will have the honor of listening and learning from them, how we can implement and grow our clubs and ourselves. 2. Rotaractors will be awarded for achieving several milestones in their Rotaract journey for the session 2019-20. There are a list of Signature Awards; of which few are Best Presentation, Best Banner, Best Newsletter, Maximum registration, most famous Ajit Chadha Memorial Mono Act. Everyone should definitely participate to bring a challenging yet enthusiastic competition in the gathering. 3. Rotaract Club of Ranchi City is hosting the conference and they are going to give more than 100% on the fun and hospitality part, trailer of which has already been witnessed by all during Jalsa. Conference will have variety of cuisines served, along with DJ night, bonfire, hookah arrangements. And I won't forget to mention the 'House of Friendship' as well. The venue is itself appealing with all its greenery and beautiful surrounding. What will be your takeaways from a conference? Most important takeaway from Jamboree will be the experiences you will have, learnings you will gather and bond that you will create during the course of event. Inviting you all to the 34th District Conference of RID 3250, Jamboree; to learn, share, grow, laugh and have fun. Looking forward to seeing you all at JAMBOREE!

From DRS (Reporting) Desk Dear Rotaractors, As you all know that the 34th Rotaract District 3250 Conference Jamboree is going to take place in this December, I, as a member of District Secretariat, would like to appeal all the members of inside and outside 3250 family to please mark your valuable presence to create a milestone. Rtr Shubham Tanmay We are organising this event at on of the premium hotel of DRS (Reporting), 2019-20 Ranchi. So we expect the maximum registration from Rotary and Rotaract Clubs. What I believe most is conference works RID 3250 as a link between Rotaract and Rotary through its events and get-together. Also club will get the chance to know more about the interclub activities. The conference won't be considered as complete without the awards too. The interesting thing is that we are adding two new awards and also making the cultural performance as non competitive event. The organising committee is also dedicated to reflect the Indo Western culture through various perspectives. Hence you can bite the delicious foods exclusively brought to you from different regions of not only India but also from different countries. We are trying to show the transculturalism and unity in every little corner. The host club is devoted to serve the best. It is not a conference only, rather it'll provide you to explore the winter beauty of Ranchi, meet fellow Rotaractors from other clubs and Districts and a platform to perform your art and culture. With the enchanted cold weather of Christmas and New Year vibes, gift yourself with the premium conference kit accessories and grab the Jamboree Signature Awards. DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT MONTH \"A man's health can be judged by what he takes of two at a time - pills or stairs\" -Joan Welsh What sets India truly apart in today's economy is a gigantic workforce. The country has the largest number of young workers, but the question is how productive can these people be if they suffer from frequent illness and Poor health? India, along with other nation, has fallen victim of many diseases like - malaria, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, etc. and the condition is severe. RTR ANJALI SINGH But the good news is this can be avoided. After eradicating polio Rotaract Clubs with its parent Rotary Clubs of RID 3250 once again have united and taken a far ANTI-TOBACCO OFFICER (2019-20) in greater responsibilities to fight against diseases. To reach a level of RID 3250 sustainability, we need to focus on prevention even more than cure to reduce the 'disease burden' on the common man. Focus more upon awareness generation and attitudinal change through consistent engagement with communities schools, rural areas and urban areas, etc. Provide a basic knowledge of Health and Fitness, putting camps in rural areas and the areas with poor health. We need to be aware of all the points of how to keep us healthy, both physically and mentally. Some people know well about how to keep their body neat, clean and healthy. However, they carry some tensions in their mind, so they always lack being fit. Mental stress gradually deteriorates the excellent condition of the body and makes it weak. Thus, we have pledged to make people aware of their body and mind, their essential healthy habits and awareness about the spread of particular disease, preventive measures to control and steps to cure and also to make their surroundings clean and green. These events aim to spread awareness about the significance of maintaining good health. A small step can make a big change, and we are all set to be the reason for the change. Because the sky is not the limit!

DISEASE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT MONTH In today's world, all we hope for is being healthy. All we wish for, all blessings we seek for is to have a life without disease. Talking about diseases, it is essential to prevent one. The world we are in is running in a very fast pace, and to maintain the speed and cope up with this busy life it is imperative to remain healthy. December is disease prevention and treatment month as the club is dedicated to preventing and fighting disease. All disease can do to a person is a rip of his personal and professional life. Imagine a life where all we get to do is sleep on the bed or see our family sad, a life where we are deprived of all the enjoyment and leisure, instead of being surrounded by laughter and smiles, all we have is pain and injury around. No one ever wants that. RTR SHUBHAM KUMAR SONI In a wider view, diseases are one of the main cause of death in India. This shows how negligent we all are with our health issues and also shows how PRESIDENT (2019-20) concerned we are in preventing disease. This reason is sufficient enough to Rotaract Club of St. Xavier’s College Ranchi take actions for the betterment of society. With a motive of Rise To Reform and as Rotaractors, we aim to create a healthy environment by focusing on cleanliness drive, highlighting the importance of vaccines, providing a way for their treatment as not everyone can afford a good treatment no matter how important it is, people, especially the ones who are not financially stable tend to ignore their diseases, thus creating greater problems for their family members. Keeping in view how important and concerning this topic is, let not only December be Disease Prevention and Treatment month but all the 12 months of the year. RTR KUMARI ANJALI This Disease Prevention and Treatment month let's talk about one of the major evil in the country, i.e. Tobacco. The list of tobacco-related diseases is SECRETARY (2019-20) long and includes heart and blood vessel diseases, bronchitis, asthma, Rotaract Club of St. Xavier’s College Ranchi impotence, congenital disabilities and growth retardation in babies, etc. Nearly one-third of the population above 15 years of age is using some form of Tobacco in India. Many families in India earn their livelihood by making beedis and are helped by the children of the family as well. A significant proportion of these gets addicted to using tobacco in some form. Although the legislation has been enacting to help reduce the number of people who use tobacco products and reduce adverse health risks associated with tobacco use but there seem to be no end to the number of tobacco consumers. To eradicate this evil, we need to encourage health caregivers, school authorities, and public health officials to discuss the hazards of any tobacco use, especially to the youth and teenaged children. It is better never to start than try to stop the addictive tobacco (nicotine) habit in any form. Hence, tobacco is very harmful to health's stay away and stay safe!!

Making every drop count: How India fought and won the war on polio October 31 was National Unity Day. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare chose this day to celebrate 25 years of the initiation of the Pulse Polio programme, which was a changemaker in achieving a polio-free India. Dr. Harshvardhan, then health and family welfare minister, said on this day, “This is to remember the historic day, October 2, 1994, which led the country to accept and adopt the strategy to immunise all children 5 years or younger in 1, 2,3 or 4 rounds.” I remember this day, when Delhi was threatened by a plague that had spread from Surat and was approaching the capital. The question arose whether we should carry on with the immunisation programme or not. Dr. Harshvardhan, then minister of health in the Delhi government, was determined we go ahead. By the end of the day, we managed to immunise most children. This proved it could be done. When did this idea of erasing polio from the face of the earth originate? This is history that must be known to the generations to come — how India fought its battle and ultimately won the war. RAJENDRA K SABOO Way back in 1977, Sir Clem Renouf, who was nominated as President of Rotary President International, was reading Reader’s Digest, in which there was an article about the eradication of smallpox. A thought came to his mind — could there be a second disease Rotary International (1991-92) that could be eradicated and could Rotary take up that challenge? This made him explore possibilities, with agencies such as Centre of Disease Control in USA. The affirmative opinion was almost unanimous — polio. In 1979, Rotary acquired 6 million doses of polio drops OPV vaccine developed by Dr. Albert Sabin. Philippines accepted these 6 million doses and immunised the total population of young children in the country. This gave encouragement to Rotary, which adopted the policy of immunising all the children of the world by 2005, the year when Rotary would complete 100 year of existence. Not much progress was made until 1985, when then Rotary International President Carlo Canseco together with Dr. Albert Sabin talked to WHO to join the crusade. Thus, Polio Plus was born, with the understanding that polio would be the responsibility of Rotary. UNICEF joined hands with it, as did Centre Disease Control of USA. It was estimated that US$ 120 million would be required for immunising all children. Rotary collected 240 million dollars by 1988. What an underestimation it was! But it led to a challenge in which the whole world, including national governments, joined in. The World Health Assembly in 1988 was when all countries, including India, decided to eradicate polio. Then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi committed India to move forward in this direction. Unfortunately, no substantive progress was made and there was no positive strategy to achieve the goal. It was at that time that late Sudarshan Agarwal, a senior leader of Rotary in the country, was Secretary General of Rajya Sabha. He made MPs question the lukewarm work on polio eradication. Then Prime Minister Narsimha Rao was holding the portfolio of health in the absence of regular Health Minister. Making every drop count: How India fought and won the war on polio The success of October 2, 1994 gave the movement direction, but more action was needed. State governments had to be convinced. I remember having been part of the political maneuvering in which we talked to the leadership of Congress-led states, telling them BJP would take the lead and they would lose this race. At the same time, BJP-governed states were being encouraged to follow the example of Delhi. At that time, AR Antulay was health minister of the country and he had convened a meeting of all health ministers of all states. I personally was deeply involved in the polio eradication programme of Rotary and having been a Trustee of the Rotary Foundation after becoming President of Rotary International , I made a presentation about the need to work together to make India polio-free. This meeting was very crucial and the health ministers unanimously adopted the strategy of National Immunisation Day. There was no looking back after this. Rotary was supporting the supply of vaccine to India as also funding the activities of WHO and UNICEF in India. However, it was realised that if success had to be achieved, the Government of India would have to be in the driving seat. India was very fortunate that regardless of which party was in power at the Centre, the health ministers were totally committed in achieving a polio-free India. State by state, India was moving towards zero case status, but UP and Bihar remained our Waterloo. The biggest challenge was to have all the communities accept the drops. We finally managed to win the confidence of religious leaders and the drive attained more success. We were very close, but suddenly, we had one case in 2011 in Howrah, West Bengal. This last case was that of Rukhsar, a two-year-old girl. In 2012, the Centre and Rotary organised the Polio Summit, and just when we were ready to start the inauguration at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, Bruce Alwyard from WHO. Geneva announced that India had been removed from the active spread of polio virus. Come March 26, 2014, and India was certified polio-free by WHO. After India did it, the world started believing that polio could be eradicated from the face of the earth. We are now on the verge of achieving a polio-free world. Nigeria has been without polio for the last three years. The only two countries that remain are Pakistan and Afghanistan. The focus of the whole world is on these two countries. As long as there is even one child suffering from polio, the virus is active. India has to be very alert, and must continue to immunise its children. Having achieved polio-free India, we have to keep India polio- free. There is no experience quite like attending the Rotary International Convention. Discover the true spirit of aloha and Rotary with your family, friends, and fellow Rotarians from 6 to 10 June in Honolulu. It is the perfect setting for the entire family of Rotary to celebrate, collaborate, and connect. There are two types of people who enjoy visits to Hawaii — those who have never been to the islands and are about to have unique and wonderful experiences, and those who have had those Hawaiian moments etched into their memories already and cannot wait to create some new ones. The convention is the best place to find and share your aloha, which you will soon discover is much more than a greeting. Just as Rotary is a way of life for Rotarians, aloha is a way of life for Hawaiians — one that focuses on living in harmony, being patient, treating everyone with respect, and sharing joy with your family, or 'ohana. Our host committee has arranged some fabulous events for you and your family. This includes a Hawaiian Culture and Lunch Boat Cruise, a two-hour tour that will feature spectacular views of Diamond Head, Waikiki, and the Kahala Gold Coast. On board, you can learn to play the ukulele, take part in hula dancing, and create your own Hawaiian flower lei. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a full range of island hospitality events, from small backyard picnics to multicourse family meals. There will be fantastic service projects to see, including two ancient Hawaiian fishponds. And a sunrise Walk for Peace will take place at the beautiful Ala Moana Beach Park, a 3-mile stroll in the shadow of the iconic Diamond Head crater. Inside and outside the convention halls, we are going to hold the most family-friendly convention in Rotary history, including a family-centered opening ceremony and family-focused events in the House of Friendship. The opening session will, of course, include our traditional flag ceremony. Our 2020 convention will also be a time to celebrate Rotary's historical ties to the United Nations. As I mentioned in my November message, June 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of the signing of the United Nations charter. On the day before the start of the convention, Rotary and the UN will host our fifth joint event of 2019-20, one focused on environmental sustainability. In addition, we are planning the greenest convention in Rotary history — and I will share more details about this in the months ahead. 1. How did you decide to start a fellowship? Rotary has really shaped me. I was a Rotary Youth Exchange student, and I was a Rotaractor for 13 years. And I’ve been listening to metal music since I was 10. I love it — it’s my passion, it’s my personality. But I didn’t see any connection between Rotary and metal music. When I was in Rotaract, I realized that other Rotaractors liked the same type of music, but I never talked about it. I didn’t want to get into a discussion with people about why I like this music. Then in 2013, I read an article in the German- language Rotary Magazin about five Rotarians who attended Wacken Open Air, which is one of the largest metal festivals in the world. So I started a closed Facebook group for Rotarians and Rotaractors to exchange our love of metal music. Then last year I organized a family of Rotary meetup at Wacken Open Air. I was surprised that 23 people showed up. I never thought that this passion of mine could connect with what Rotary does. 2. What do you need to get a fellowship approved? You need to have 25 interested members from at least five countries. They don’t need to be Rotarians; they just need to be part of the Rotary family. So we have Rotarians, Rotaractors, Rotary Youth Exchange students, and alumni. At the moment, we have 164 members from 23 countries. Then you need to write bylaws and come up with the purpose of the fellowship. We wanted to do something good, and we wanted to connect the Rotary world and the metal world somehow. So we decided to support The Rotary Foundation and the Wacken Foundation, which helps young people who want to develop their musical skills in a rock and metal environment. Finally, you need to apply to Rotary International for official recognition. 3. How did you spread the word? Social media — I have a huge network of people through being involved in Rotary. I sent messages through Facebook to the regional magazines. And we got our own booth at the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg. The reactions there were overwhelming. We got something like 60 or 70 new members in that week. A Youth Exchange student in an AC/DC T-shirt came up and said, “That’s so cool. I would never have thought within Rotary I would find this music that I love.” Then we organized a booth at this year’s Wacken Open Air, where we raised funds for End Polio Now. We talked to people whose image of Rotary was not totally accurate. Now we have metalheads who have never been involved in Rotary but think that what our fellowship is doing is great. They said, “Can we become a member?” So we are changing our bylaws to allow them to join as “friends” of the fellowship. We can start to connect to them so they can get more of an idea of what Rotary is doing around the world. 4. Why should people think about joining a fellowship? If you know that someone is involved in the family of Rotary, you already have a common interest. But everyone also has different interests and passions — things that you enjoy doing in your free time. Fellowships are a wonderful way to find people who share those other interests with you. If you have not just one common interest but two or three, it’s very easy to talk to people all around the world. You can exchange ideas and come up with new ones, and that’s what I think is great.
