E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE ABOUT THE ESSAY COMPETITION (WORDS FROM THE ORGANISER) With the spread of Covid-19 global pandemic almost all educational systems across the globe have been forced to adopt E-learning. Our nation is not an exception. In Assam also most of the higher educational institutions have adopted online mode of teaching and learning. In such a new process of teaching-leaning, both teachers and students must be well acquainted with technology. Therefore, in order to familiarise the faculty members with this sudden shift from traditional mode to online mode a great amount of effort has been invested at the individual, institutional and government levels. But, unfortunately, while going ahead with this mode of learning, often the learner’s perspective seems to have been neglected. In this context, an Online Essay competition was organised to realise the effectiveness of e-learning from student’s perspective. As such, the topic of the essay competition was considered as - “E-LEARNING DURING COVID-19: YOUR PERSPECTIVE” (COVID-19 1 Œõ∂鬱¬ÛȬӬ ˝◊√-˘±øÚ«— – ŒÓ¬±˜±1 ‘√ø©Üˆ¬—·œ). The Online essay competition was organised among the students of the colleges of Dibrugarh district. The prize money of the competiton was set as 1st Prize: Rs 3000 2nd Prize: Rs 2000 3rd Prize: Rs 1000 each. Students from various institutions of Dibrugarh district submitted essays. We respect the views of all the participants that they expressed from their own perspective. As per the evaluation of our honourable judge the following students were selected and awarded- 1st: BOBEE BORAH, DULIAJAN COLLEGE 2nd: KOHILIKA DEB, DHSK COLLEGE 3rd: PARISHMITA SAIKIA, DDR COLLEGE As per the guidelines top 10 essays were selected for publication in the E-Book format. The list of students whose essays were selected for publication are - Bobee Borah (Duliajan College), Kohilika Deb (DHSK College), Parishmita Saikia (DDR College), Prateeti Bhorali (HS Passed), Jahnavee Bharadwaj (DUIET), Sanu Das (DDR College), Stuti Khaund (DHSK College), Disha Gogoi (DHSK College), Bhupali Dutta (DHSK College), Saurav Gogoi (DDR College), Surabhi Chetia (DHSK College) This E-book contains the essays of the above mentioned participants of the competition. E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E-LEARNING DURING COVID 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE ? Kohilika Deb Class: B.Sc 4th semester Institution: DHSK College, Dibrugarh Email: [email protected] INTRODUCTION: E-Learning is a type of learning system based on formal teaching but with the help of electronic resources. It is a web-based learning. It includes the use of computer, mobile phones or tablets and internet as its main components. It is capable of delivering education to a large number of people at the same or different times, which makes it easy for learners to learn anytime, anywhere. E-learning is commonly used in educational institutions and in different economic corporations. This type of learning includes a variety of technologies like audio, video, presentations, quizzes, group discussion etc. This type of learning was first used 6

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE for educational purposes, delivering contents and information from teachers to students. But as technology evolved, more interactive and multidirectional tools were incorporated. Many institutions, businesses and corporations are making use of e-learning to train their employees. Workers capitalize the online training to increase their knowledge and skills, which in turn results in high efficient business works. E-learning has made the learning system more easy and interesting for users all over the world. From giving learning opportunities to the disadvantaged learners to train workers of different corporations, e-learning has played a very important role. Due to COVID-19 crisis, the importance of e-learning has increased much more in the present year. BODY: In this year of 2020, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the e-learning system has increased to a great extent all over India and the world. As schools, colleges and other educational institutions are closed from March onwards, e- learning has greatly helped the students to cope up with their studies without wasting the time. E-learning has helped the students to cover their syllabus at home. In such a time e- learning has helped me a lot in my studies too. Regular classes were enrolled by our teachers during the lockdown period with the help of different types of applications like Google Classroom, Whatsapp, Zoom app and YouTube. Different study materials are sent by our teachers with the help of these applications. Explanations through presentations, videos and audios; classes through group video call etc has helped me a lot to continue with my studies. Tests were held in the form of quizzes or multiple choice type in Google Classroom. Many study links were also sent to us by our teachers in YouTube. There are other applications also which had helped me in my studies. One of this application is Unacademy, where I can get online lectures on various 7

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE subjects by different skilled professors. I can also attend regular online classes which is held in this app. Notes are also regularly given to us though What’sapp and Google Classroom. Overall, e-learning has come to a great help to all the students in the time of lockdown. Online classes has greatly helped me in my studies. At this time of world crisis, when every educational institutions along with different economic corporations, businesses etc were closed, e-learning has come to a great help to all the people of this group, especially the students. E-learning has helped me to continue my classes even in the lockdown period. In online classes teachers provided us with tasks, by which I was able to prepare more and more questions regarding all the chapters of different subjects at home. Sometimes there is a little problem which had to be faced due to the network failure. Network failure is one of the major problems faced in online classes. E-learning has come to a great help to all the students in this time, but still according to me online classes cannot be compared to the classes in schools and colleges. In schools and colleges, students can have a face to face interaction with the teachers, which is not possible in every online classes. But during this time online classes has become very important and has made studies more interesting for every students. E-learning or online classes have become an important part of every students life, especially in this pandemic period. It has been a great help for the students to continue their studies during this time. But I think there could be more improvements made while taking classes in online mode. Teachers should not give unnecessary homework to the school students, which may create confusion among the students. Particular one or two applications should be used for giving tasks, projects or homeworks to the students. Using random applications may also create confusion. Teachers 8

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE before using any applications should discuss with the students if they are comfortable with those applications or not. Teachers should ask if every students are able to attend the online classes or not. Many students do not have smart phones, tablets or computer, due to which they may not be able to take part in the online classes or get the facilities of e-learning. In that case, teachers should make sure and give those students different tasks so that they are not deprived from the online classes. Teachers can give the tasks verbally through phone calls, so that the students do not miss the regular online classes given by the teachers. Students who cannot give the online tests for not having smart phones, tablets or computers, can be given project work or assignments having same test scores, and their scores can be counted on the basis of these projects or assignments. Thus they can keep up with the other students and all the students will get equal opportunity. CONCLUSION: E-learning or online learning has been in a great demand in the present time, especially for the students, businessmen, different economic corporations etc. It has been helping the people of different sectors in many ways. But in this current year, when the whole world is suffering from COVID-19 pandemic, the demand and the use of e-learning technology has increased to a great extent all over the world. During the complete lockdown period, e-learning has helped each and every people to continue their works from home. Due to e-learning, the lockdown could not hamper the studies of students in schools, colleges and universities. People working in different economic sectors also continued their works through this. Thus we can say that in this COVID-19 pandemic period, the importance of e-learning has increased to a great extent which may continue in the future alson 9

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E –LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE ?Prateeti Bharali Institution: Salt Brook Academy H.S. 2nd Year E-mail ID: [email protected] INTRODUCTION: E-resource has become one of the important thing in our day to day life .In today‘s world e -resource helps us to complete most of our work just by sitting in the comfort zone of our house. E-learning is a type of e-resource .E- learning can be termed as a network enabled transfer of skills and knowledge ,where the delivery of education is made to a large number of recipients at the same or different times. There are a lot of content courses of e-learning which are: digital courses, quizzes, webinars, video courses, screen casts, talking head video, e-books and articles, conversation simulations etc. When one learns via various electronic devices or means available to us it is also termed as e- learning .E-learning enables us to learn at 17

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE anytime and from anywhere .Some of the modern gadgets required for accessing E- learning are - electronic device such as smart phone , personal computer or tablet and a proper internet connection. Art, crafts, studies and many other things can be learned through E-learning .It saves time and the money .It enables us to interact with various national and international teachers. E-learning is a process which requires more activeness from the learners side .This is because during an online interaction it is the learner who has to concentrate more, unlike the traditional method or offline teaching, here we are not bound to attend the classes and can quit whenever we like to .However, like any other resource E – learning has its advantages and disadvantages .E- learning is only possible when we have electronic gadgets and proper network connections. Network connection is most important when it comes to E-learning. This is because even if we have various gadgets but no network connection it is of no use as e-learning will not be possible. Well there are some advantages of e learning which are: during offline classes some of the students may feel reluctant to ask questions to their teachers but when it comes to e-learning he or she may personally text the teacher during the class and clear their doubts. During severe conditions like today e-learning is the only way students can maintain their academic studies and various learning processes. THE KIND OF E-LEARNING I AM EXPOSED TO: As mentioned earlier we can learn anything through e- learning .The kind of E-learning that I am mostly interested are art, crafts and studies. Painting has been my hobby since childhood .I have always wanted to learn it with more accuracy .So I used the e-learning process for this. From watercolour paintings, acrylic painting , oil painting , glass painting to charcoal portraits I have acquired these skills mainly through different international and national online tutors. Nowadays different artists and creators have started their Patreon websites so that people can learn many new things from them at a low cost. Patreon is actually a platform based 18

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE in United States that provides business tools for creators to run a subscription content service. The crafts that I have learnt have basically helped me to recycle newspaper, cartoon boxes, plastic bottles etc and thereby convert these into beautiful pen stands, magazine holder ,flower vase and many more. During covid- 19 period it is impossible for all the students as well the teachers to attend traditional classes so during this period almost all educational institutions are forced to adopt e-learning. MY EXPERIENCE TOWARDS E-LEARNING: When it comes to my experience of learning through online classes I think it is a very good approach as we can learn just by staying at home. I am currently preparing for my NEET 2020 examination through E-learning. According to my experience e- learning is similar to the traditional process of learning. But in this case, it totally depends on us how we use it .This is because in e – learning we require to pay attention to the class even when we know that the teacher is not really watching us. When it comes to clearing my doubts I can always text the teacher and send pictures of my doubts. Also I can attend my classes whenever I wish to as live videos are mostly recorded and I can watch it at any time of the day or even at night. Nowadays even mock tests paper, notes etc are provided at various sites. So it is up to us whether we can take this benefit or not. The crash course provided online are cheaper than the offline ones and anyone can attend them. All we need is a smart phone and a good internet connection. If we have these two things it is like we have a universe of knowledge right in our hands. Also it is because of E-leaning that it has become possible for me to learn from many famous teachers. So, I totally encourage E-learning. Besides nowadays different schools and colleges are providing online classes as the academic line is lagging behind during the pandemic. I have watched a few videos of my college teachers and they are giving their best, so that students are able to learn even during this crisis. Different platforms for educational purposes have been established which provides 19

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE amazing lectures and courses to students .Some of those are Byjus, Vedantu,Unacademy etc. Until now Unacademy is my favourite. SUGGESTIONS FOR EFFECTIVENESS OF E-LEARNING: Even after having so many benefit the E-learning process is still not recognised or acknowledged by many people .This is because in rural areas usually people cannot afford smart phone, laptop or any such device. And even if they own one they lack good network connection. Electricity is another factor that is required for the functioning of various electronic devices. Therefore, Government should take some steps to overcome such problems so that everyone can profit from e-learning. Affordable smart phones should be launched so that atleast the poor ones who want to concentrate on their studies or want to pursue knowledge about many other things can do so . Internet facility should be provided to the poor students who study hard .Both Internet facilities and smart phones are owned by rich and middle class students but only the students from a poor background are lagging behind in case of such facilities. If these cannot be done then different other methods such as teaching through radios, television are other options available .Many approaches can be taken if the government wishes to. CONCLUSION: Thus, E-learning is the most appropriate step that will enable the students to continue their academic or any other learning processes in the current situation. It totally depends on the students how they utilise this resource. Not everyone is able to use this opportunity but atleast the ones who can use it should utilise it. During this global pandemic, it is due to E-learning students can continue their studies. Learners can have access to millions or billions of knowledge modules or websites through e- learning. E-learning nowadays is mostly provided through apps such as zoom, google meet etc. There may be some disadvantages in E- learning but it is up to us how we can analyse more on the positive aspects and keep on learning n 20

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E-LEARNING IN THE CONTEXT OF COVID-19: MY VIEWS ? Jahnavee Bharadwaj Institute of Engineering and Technology, DU Class: Second Year Email: [email protected] ‘E-learning’, which is also called as ‘online learning’ or ‘web-based learning’ is an interactive method wherein technology and various software and mobile applications are used for imparting and sharing knowledge amongst a group of people. E-learning can take place in various forms: it may be Synchronous Learning or it may be Asynchronous Learning. Synchronous learning is where various users come together in real time (i.e., particular time) and share and impart knowledge amongst them. The various forms associated with this type of learning are virtual classrooms, video and audio conferences, chat, live webcasting, audio webcasting and so on. To carry out such types of learning, various software and mobile applications are used such as Google Meet, Skype, Zoom, Cisco WebEx and GoToMeeting and so on. Asynchronous Learning, on the other hand, is time- independent. Here, the user can learn, impart, or share knowledge at any time mostly with the help of the internet. This type of learning is commonly carried out through emails, social media, video, and audiotapes, mobile learning, social learning, game- based learning, through PDF’s and so on. Some particularly common applications 21

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE are Byju’s: The Learning App, Coursera, Khan Academy and so on. The Covid-19 virus which originated in the Wuhan city of China has disrupted the livelihoods of millions across the globe. Countries all over the world are imposing lockdown so as to stop the reckless transmission of the contagious virus – and this has brought varied sectors of the economy into a standstill. One of these sectors is the education sector. Universities, colleges and schools all over the world are being shut down and this has brought the traditional methods of teaching to a standstill. The lockdown has resulted in 1.2 billion students from 186 countries being left out of their classrooms. They are not able to attend their physical classes and this has led the teaching as well as the student community to embrace online learning, i.e., e-learning through various online platforms and applications. This sudden transition from the traditional system of education has put forth new opportunities as well as challenges. Shaanvi Hazarika, who happens to be a ninth-grade student, has been spending most of her time inside her house after the country went for a nation-wide lockdown. She has been in her Dibrugarh town for three months now and there is hardly any time she remembers going out. She says, “Our school has been conducting online classes since the lockdown period but there is hardly any interaction. I miss my school, my friends, the playground and all the games that we played during recess hours.” Her mother says, “I am worried about my children, I find them slothful most of the time and the ever-increasing screen time amongst them has always been a concern for me.” This is a common story for most children in the urban areas of the country. Most of the schools and colleges have started conducting online classes that are attended by the students and teachers. These classes are also recorded and uploaded on various websites and social media platforms. With the rise of online learning, numerous online webinars have also been conducted by various institutions attracting students, professors and others alike. These knowledge-sharing sessions have been particularly beneficial for many people across the globe. Recently, the government has launched many radios as well as television channels along with 22

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE particular websites and YouTube channels for the student community. Prominent amongst these are the SWAYAM Prabha DTH channels, SWAYAM app, e-VIDYA, SANKALP app and NIOS websites and so on. These have been catering to the students of classes 1 to 12 and also to many under-graduates and post- graduates alike. The National Digital Library has also been made accessible to all. Lately, as of now, some private institutions and NGOs have also started imparting courses online or through various social media platforms available. There are however many challenges to online learning that needs to be overcome. Fatema Zannat, a student from Dhubri district says, “I live in a remote village where network connectivity is an issue. I am not able to attend online classes. This makes me sad as my classmates are now ahead of me and there is little that I can do about it.” Poor infrastructure, network issues and lack of basic knowledge about the Internet make many unable to reap the benefits of e-learning. Pooja Saikia from Dhemaji laments, “We are poor. My family finds it very difficult to meet both ends of the day. We do not even have a T.V. in our house, let alone having smartphones for online classes. I hardly know anything about the Internet.” This creates a huge digital divide when it comes to e-learning. While the student in urban areas has access to high-quality Internet services, the same is not true for the rural sections of the society. As such, it is high time that the government and various NGOs along with the private organizations step in, and try to mitigate these differences in the long run so that no one is left behind. While it is true that the e-learning is replacing the traditional methods of learning in these days of the pandemic, it comes with its own sets of challenges and opportunities. Many are also of the opinion that after this pandemic is finally over, a hybrid system of education may come into existence wherein both the traditional as well as the online methods are on the play. It is high time that we adapt ourselves accordingly as “Change is the only constant”. We should all, therefore utilize our time judiciously while taking appropriate measures to keep ourselves and our families safe during this pandemicn 23

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E-learning during COVID-19: Your perspective ?Stuti Khaund B.Sc 6th Semester DHSK College, Dibrugarh E-mail Id : [email protected] Introduction : Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) has come out with various proposed changes to the existing set up of education system in India. The addition & oversights in these reports seen troublesome for all Indian’s interested in the betterment of the people of India. There is a lack of a well-designed science based curririculum truly relevant to the Indian scene. But due to the world wide corona virus pandemic, e-learning i.e. learning conducted via electronic media has become a new platform for sharing various dialogues. An access to a well planned & relevant system of e-learning goes a long way towards fruitful development of an individual. It will not only help him / her to expose new horizons, but at the most basic level enable a person to acquire the skills necessary for a sustainable earning potential. Undeveloped potential is a national loss. The curriculum today that is in effect due to covid-19 has provided the learners to cultivate their knowledge with the numerous courses available online at their respective homes in a risk-free environment by maintaining social distance. The virtual reality in e-learning is that it allows the learner to develope skills while gaining experience in a risk-free environment. 29

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE Body The kind of e-learning I am exposed to: E-learning is totally a whole new concept to our existing education system. Though going through online videos or any kind of online courses has been already there in our taste buds, but the conversion of the whole educational system into e-learning to access education from kindergarten to high school to collegiate level, is completely a new step taken by most of the institutions all over the world due to covid-19. This is allowing the students to continue their courses and value time so that the academic year is not lost. Classes are being organized by the teachers with the help of apps like Whatsapp, Google meet, Microsoft teams etc. Apart from academic curriculum, webinars (online seminars) are being held by some institution, to uplift some important topic regarding the course amongst the students. This is called synchronous learning where the students are present online at the same time and have a direct interaction with the teacher. Sometimes the teacher shares notes regarding the topic of discussion where the student has the full access to learn wherever they need to. It makes them more independent in their learning process. This kind of learning is called asynchronous learning. E-learning has opened up a world of possibilities for learning while working virtually from anywhere. My experience : My online classes have been a saviour for me during this pandemic. I think it’s a great program. We just need a smartphone /laptop & good internet connection. It reduces the chance of getting COVID- 19 because we don’t need to go to the college campus. I can study anywhere anytime. In my experience, e-learning has saved my money as well as time. If I were still going to those traditional classroom classes then I would be spending around six hundred rupees per month for my travel expenses only. Also there are additional expenses as well. Now, when I am attending the online classes, the only expense that I have to incur is my server charge which is around three hundred rupees per month. My class mates are connected on 30

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE one screen by our teacher and then we can have direct interaction with our teachers as well as our class mates. Also there’s a chat box option where we can type in doubts and questions regarding the topic of discussion. It just takes few days to launch new courses. We can refresh our learning by going through it again and again anytime we want to. This pandemic has impacted me in such a way that I thought I would not graduate on time. But now I’m happy enough that I am learning something new every day & investing my time to sharpen my skills. Suggestions for effectiveness of e-learning : The basic problem of e-learning is firstly, not having a smartphone / laptop & secondly internet connectivity. It may also happen that the person has a smartphone / laptop but has a poor network connection. According, to National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), in India in 2019, the internet connectivity is 14.9% in urban area and 4.4% in rural area. Moreover, internet connectivity is only 37% in Assam. This pandemic has taught us now that it’s high time now that our government should start e- learning programs for the teacher both in rural and urban areas. Training should be focused on how to connect to the students & keep an online track of the results. Moreover, our NGOs can form mobile / banks with internet connection in areas where students do not have these facilities. So, that they are able to join their online classes in these banks. Conclusion : In my case, being a distance learner has made me more self -disciplined & able to work on my own. Since, I am not physically present in the classroom, the instructor won’t be constantly there to remind me of my assignments or projects. So, it’s totally upto me how I keep up with all the work for the course. This has helped me a lot to be self-disciplined. Hope that people will overcome this pandemic soon & people can normalize their lifestyle as it was beforen 31

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E-LEARNING DURING COVID 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE ?Disha Gogoi DHSK College Class: 4th Semester Email: [email protected] When the world was being farcical on the internet about ways on surviving the zombie apocalypse, nobody ever thought they would rather find themselves in the middle of a virus apocalypse. It feels like a situation straight out of a sci-fi novel, having had to wear mask, face shield, gloves and using technologies for daily task as simple as ordering groceries online. It might not be a huge difference for first world countries in regards to using technologies in daily life however, for my third world country, it is a huge quantum jump. In this Covid 19 pandemic, one huge adjustment for families across the globe is of course EDUCATION. Many educational institutions have been under lockdown and closed for months on end. Nobody knows for sure when they will reopen as corona virus pandemic shows no sign of abating anytime soon. This has forced educational institutions to offer E-LEARNING. E-learning stands for electronic learning. It is the learning conducted through electronic devices like computer, laptop and even a smartphone . The learning is done through various websites, blogs and softwares such as video conferencing apps like Zoom, Google meet, Microsoft Team; student assessment apps like Google classroom as well as instant messaging apps like WhatsApp. It strives to recreate classroom environment as the learner learns through the computer. The flexibility of E- learning is that the educators and the students can remain connected and engaged to disseminate knowledge at anytime and anywhere in the presence of strong internet connection and a device to access internet which are pre-requisite for E- learning. I was exposed to E-Learning last year when I enrolled myself in an online course in ‘Cousera’. The course was well structured 32

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE with high quality video and audio. Courses like these are well planned before it is made accessible to the students as these courses are meant to be delivered online only. However, the online college courses during this crisis do not seem to be upto the standard mark. It is impractical to expect high quality course design now as this pandemic situation was so sudden that neither our professors nor students were prepared for. The college which I attend now moved classes online till the end of April. For each semester in the department, a WhatsApp group was opened to stay in connection with our professors. It also served as discussion forum to clear our doubts. Self study materials were send to us regularly. For face to face interaction we have opted for ‘Zoom’. But this sudden switch over to E-Learning is disrupting our curricula, for majority of our professors are less equipped and lack digital fluency to navigate the internet and to run the application as well as to manage the virtual classroom. Many a times professors canceled classes for having technical difficulties and trouble with internet connectivity. I personally found it difficult to focus on the video screen during live lectures for an hour straight. At times when there were weak internet connections, we were asked to turn off the camera. Often the background noises, my classmates’ siblings showing up on the screen and all hustling bustling noises made it impossible to hear people talk. So we were asked to mute our microphones. But muting microphone abstain us from engaging into discussion promptly. The messages on the chat box often go unnoticed by the professor. Another problem that some students have faced is poor internet network. While they initially join the class, they had to leave in middle of the lecture because of signal issues then rejoin when strong network is available to them. Due to these fluctuations, they are not able to follow the lectures and had to solely rely on study materials. Even though a lot of the educational institutions are offering online classes to their students, yet it still is a struggle to adjust from physical classes to online classes. To make E- learning effective 33

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE and beneficial, tremendous efforts are required from both teachers and students. Firstly, let us look at what the institutions can do to make E- Learning more effective. The most important step to productive E- learning is to attain digital fluency. To train the educators as well as the students to use educational technology, tools judiciously and in a manner that doesn’t drain them completely requires a lot of planning and monitoring. For this the college should invest in for a professional technical team to look after the matter. Secondly, it is important to create a time schedule for classes with thirty minutes break between two classes. Since we are moving to online, our screentime increases. So having breaks between classes will help us to avoid straining our eyes. Thirdly, it is important to design easy course content whether they are pre- recorded videos, live lectures or creating study materials. The pre-recorded videos can be uploaded on YouTube by changing the privacy to ‘unlisted’ and sharing the link with the students. This way, only the students with whom the link has been shared can watch the videos at anytime whenever there is good network speed. Moreover, moving to E-Learning means the learning becomes ‘Learner Centered’ learning. So it is necessary to create easy self study materials and videos. Fourthly, for students facing weak signal issues, audio classes can be prepared as downloading audio requires less data compared to streaming videos online. Fifthly, it is very important to translate study materials into vernacular languages as a large section of students in Assam appear for exams in vernacular languages. Moreover in this current situation, it is a risk to buy books from the market or to visit library while maintaining social distancing. Sixthly, colleges in the town can collaborate to telecast lectures on general subjects like Multi Disciplinary, Environmental Science, General English on Television and radio. Now let us look at what we students can contribute for effective E-Learning. Firstly, we students are more exposed to the digital world than our teachers, so it is important to be calm and 34

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE patient when our professors face technical issues while conducting classes. Secondly, while we are home quarantined and on E-learning we are prone to procrastination. To avoid being lethargic, we need to maintain our normal routine. This means waking up at normal time and doing everyday chores we do on a college day. This will help us to maintain some sense of control and normalcy while attending online classes. Thirdly, we need to make sure there is no distraction when attending live lectures. For this we need a workspace which should be separated from places we usually relax. This will create some kind of study zone helping us to concentrate more. Since we are using laptop or smartphone for E-Learning, we should log off from our social accounts to avoid unnecessary notifications. Fourthly, while watching pre-recorded lectures, we should try to refrain ourselves from clicking the pause button. Pausing a lecture means we are creating some time for ourselves to do something else which will slowdown us. Fifthly, we should make a quick summary of the lectures we have just attended or watched. Since we are E-Learning, the audio might not clear for the entire duration of the class. So we need to make sure to note down the key words and look up in the study materials and make a summary of the lecture. This will help to grab the topic a lot faster and we will also have an overview of the topics discussed in the online class. All things considered, this Covid19 pandemic has created flurry of chaos all around. However if we look into the other side of the coin, the Covid19 pandemic has pointed out the loopholes of our age old traditional teaching learning process which otherwise would never been addressed in a serious manner. This has mandated the institutions, teachers, students and even the government to think out of the standard box and to innovate novel strategies in our education system. Nevertheless, I believe this sudden twist of events will become a catalyst for positive changes in the use and development of educational technologyn 35

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E-LEARNING DURING COVID-19: MY PERSPECTIVE ? Bhupali Dutta DHSK College, Dibrugarh B.A 6th Semester E-mail: [email protected] A pandemic which is spreading all around the world brought a brief cessation to every aspect of human life. The pandemic within no time has spread all over, taking lives of many and leaving the world in an utter chaos. The government in order to prevent the spread of the deadly virus namely Corona virus, has laid down lockdown for many weeks, which is associated with many regulations that are to be followed and moreover the people were allowed to go out of the house only in the utmost necessary conditions. Along with the various other demerits of the pandemic the closing of educational institution is one such. Various educational institutions are shut off since three months which is a great challenge for both teachers and students. To 36

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE meet with the increasing need of education and career of the students, E-learning method is adopted. E-learning to a great extend helped the students in learning from the comfort of their home and moreover in keeping oneself far from the danger of the spread of the virus. E-learning is basically a method of learning through electronic device, for instance mobile, laptop, computer and the like. Institutions adopted many applications through which they could facilitate E-learning; some used video conferencing while some others provide video through You Tube and other such electronic platforms. No other means would have facilitated the learning process on this critical condition but E-learning crossed all the barriers and provided the student a learning opportunity in their own premises. Besides the great advantage of the method there are some major drawbacks too. In spite of all merits and demerits the method is widely used all over with proved benefits. E-learning as a method has touched much of the population in the bygone months. I as a student am no exception. Though the deadly virus have made the entire world in a standstill, the well known ‘internet’ have bonded the world to one single unit. Internet again proved itself as one of the best invention that mankind is gifted with. On the critical scenario also, none other than internet helped people around the globe with many necessities, that at times could also be claimed as a basic need. One such need is education which is accustomed with going to institutions with books and stuffs. But challenging the traditional method of teaching-learning, E- learning has provided the opportunity to learn from home in a situation where going out of the comfort zone of house is risky to such extend that it could bring about deadly virus. At these critical months, I am accustomed to E-learning which was very beneficial. I as a student of last semester was tensed about the completion of syllabus, but very soon the faculty had decided to make the students learn in the premises of their home through the formerly mentioned 37

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE method. Our teachers adopted the Zoom application and had delivered their lectures with much affords. The students were benefitted to a large extend and to our good fortune we are done with the syllabus. My experience during the hard time was indeed a good one as I had the facilities necessary for the classes. But the irony here is my companions suffered a lot during the time because of numerous reasons, some had network issues while some other even had problems due to the unavailability of the devices required. Having a good time we had no time to think about the problems one among us was facing. Some missed parts of lectures as their network lapsed at times. It was indeed a critical time for many and cannot be regarded as the best method of learning. The traditional institutional learning is far better than the e-learning method to which nobody could deny. I felt happy enough as I was tensed about the completion of syllabus which is done now, I also was happy as I was kept acquainted with books without which life had turned to a standstill. Moreover, I felt good as the time that life without colleges was hard to be spent at home alone doing nothing, but e-classes has provided me with an opportunity to pass my long day with something very useful. Other than all that we were far away from the danger of the spread of virus and remain safe indoors. The imagination of learning at the comfort of the home is something we experienced to a great extend. But the juxtaposition is even a deadly virus could not challenge the education process. The dedication of both teachers and students made it possible to conduct the online classes and made internet connection very fruitful. It is argued many a times that e-learning is not learner-centric, but from my experience I haven’t felt that to be true for any moment. Both learner and teacher take active participation in the E-classes as well. I was indeed facilitated through e-learning to a great extent. E-learning is indeed an effective method, with obvious drawbacks and nevertheless it would have been more effective if only it could 38

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE serve the need of all. The network problem faced is one of the issues that are to be looked upon, the lapse of network and sometimes unavailability of the same could challenge the E-learning method. Network problem can create problems to such an extent that students could fail to attend classes and miss topics that they were eager to learn and teachers could also not arrange classes. Along with that teachers sometimes are not acquainted with the E-learning method and the use of gadgets and due to that they could not arrange classes. To make the method more effective teachers need proper training for the same. The E-learning method is also bounded to one class of people, economically weaker section could not arrange a device or sometimes internet connectivity and because of that they could not take the advantage of an online class. E-learning is the only method, which could be expected in the days where going out of home is not away from risk. Along with that organising classes in the traditional teaching-learning method, in the situation, could not follow the norms laid by the government. It is not, of course, possible to maintain social distance in traditional formal classes. E-learning is accepted along with drawbacks to keep intact the education system even at the period of the pandemic. Students all around the globe are facilitated from the E-learning method and accept it because of the various good effects it has. E- learning can make teaching-learning process faster, as the time that a student need to get ready and reach the educational institution is subtracted. Many have also proved that the students are able to absorb much at this method as the interest and attention both are raised because of the comfortableness. But E-learning could be more justifiable if all the students could enjoy it equally. Much news are heard about students who suicide because of inability to attend the E-classes, due to their respective difficulties, which includes network problems or unavailability of devices. Hence, everything good has some bad in it, or is not good for all n 39

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE E-LEARNING DURING COVID-19 : MY PERSPECTIVE ? Saurov gogoi H.S. 2nd Year (commerce) DDR College, Chabua E-mail.: [email protected] INTRODUCTION There are many important factors in order to build a good nation and one of those factors is education. Education can be considers as a backbone of any country in the world. Usually, in time of disaster the governments suspend the schools, universities and other educational institutions for some time. Today, the whole is fighting the unique and dangerous virus called COVID-19 and the educational institutions are being closed. In this situation, the teachers in different countries have started using e-learning in teaching the student. E-learning is a technological tool that has been used for teaching and learning. The application of e-learning include computer based learning, web-based learning, virtual education opportunities and digital collaboration content that is provided via internet, audio or video tape, CDROM and satellite TV. E-learning can be self-paced or instructor led that include image, media in the form of text, animation and streaming video and audio. Different abbreviations have been used as synonyms to e-learning like CBT(Computer Based Training), WBT (Web-Based Training) and IBT(Internet-Based Training). E-learning can be described as the best and most convenient way to learn on your own. THE KIND OF E-LEARNING : Now- a-days, students are accessing the lessons increasingly on different apps and that will help the students specially who are in higher grades to be ready for the coming years. Different companies such as Vedanta, Unacademy, and Byjus have offered free access to live classes to the student in order to continue their 40

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE learning form home. The teachers have started teaching their students via e- learning application through uploading PDF, online class and ask the student to do their assignments and send them by Whatsapp or email. The teachers are using different app in online teaching such as voov, superstar, zoom cloud meetings, google classroom etc. E-learning has the potential to transform the way we teach and learn. It can raise standards and widen participation in lifelong learning. It can enhance the quality and reach of their teaching and reduce the time spent on administration. It can enable every learner to achieve his or her potential and help to build an educational workforce empowered to change. It makes possible a truly ambitions education system. But, million from government school and college especially in rural areas, are not having access to education as they lack the basic requirements for E-learning. MY EXPERIENCE : In India, the government went for lockdown to reduce the spread of COVID-19, as such there has been an increase in the number of students using the platform and apps of ED-TECH. My online learning experience as a student is good. My online classes are a convenience for me. In today’s society, online courses are widely used in colleges, schools and universities providing easy access to course materials, classroom discussion and feedback to instructors. These classes offer more of a one -on -one teacher student relationship rather than a teacher having to spread their focus amongst other students. I’ve learned that to be a learner, you have to be self disciplined and able to work well on your own. Since you won’t be physically going to class each week, you can take part in class from the comfort of your own home. You must be self disciplined, because the teacher won’t constantly be there to remind you of assignments or of projects deadline. Other obligations may mean that you are not able to do the work as regularly as if you were physically attending classes . It will be up to you to make sure that you are 41

E-LEARNING DURING COVID- 19 : MY PERSPECTIVE keeping up with all the work for the course. When I took the first online class, I just thought that the work for the course could be put off until I had time to do the work. In doing this i got very far behind. It took me a while to catch back up with the assignments. Then, I promised myself that I would never let that happen again. Although online classes are more convenient, comparing to my experience as a student in a physical classroom, online learning is definitely harder. Suggestions for effectiveness of e-learning: Anyone may be able to create a simple online course. However, increasing the effectiveness of online learning course takes a good deal of time, hard work, and a commitment to high quality content. Here are some tips that may help in success of online teaching-learning process. It includes an important task of developing a good e-learning course regardless of the material or curriculum. 1) Know your subject materials well: There is no golden rule on how much time you need to put into creating the ideal content, but one thing is certain -you need to take your time to research material before making it available to your learners. The reasons are simple , you want to be prepared to back up any claims made within your course materials, not all learners digest information the same way ,and some may need more explanation through example or further proof. 2) Online courses provided should suit to all learning styles: The design of the online course should take every learning style into consideration. For example, while one student benefit from visual multimedia presentation of coursework and lessons, another student may be able to better absorb the information when it is presented in text form. An effective e-learning course always takes these various learning style into account when the lesson are being created. 3) Facilitate contact: Students and teachers should be able establish a open line 42
