Successful Coral Reef Restoration Projects in the Philippines
The Coral Triangle Initiatives and The Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in the Philippines are collaborating in the establishment and effective management of marine protected areas (MPA) to ensure further damage to the coral biodiversity that will give room for coral regrowth and restoration. Around 270,000 ha (2,700 km2) or 0.1% of the Philippines’ coral reefs are under some form of protection. An assessment performed by the Marine Protected Area Support Network in 2011 showed that 1,620 MPAs have been established, and are managed locally.
