Editor’s LetterI am pleased to report that my financial report to the Board on the Beardie Bulletin for this past fiscal year hasbeen able to remain self-supportive, and no funds have been supplemented by the BCCA for the productionof the magazine. This is due in part to our advertising support, as well as our subscribers. Our staff worksdiligently to keep costs down, and produce a magazine that is top quality for us to enjoy. Please keep in mindthat whenever you advertise you are supporting your Breed publication, and your support is needed for us tocontinue to produce four magazines per year.On that note, some of you voiced that you would like us to distribute the publication to AKC judges. It wasyour concern that judges should be able to see the best our breed has to offer in our publication. We cannotprint and distribute the magazine to judges since the cost of that undertaking is just not possible. However,we have been able to offer a digital version of the magazine to AKC Herding judges, and we have had agood response. We sent an email stating: “We would like to send you a digital version of our quarterly breedpublication, The Beardie Bulletin, where breeders showcase their top Bearded Collies in conformation as well asperformance.” Positive comments have been received, i.e.: • Definitely put me on the list! • Thank you… enjoyed reading your magazine, very well done. As a long time OES breeder (50 years) I'm always interested in what the Beardie people are doing. As a herding judge, I love to see the quality of Beardies throughout the country. • Thank you...enjoyed every page. • Thank you for the digital version of your quarterly breed publication. Excellent job!We hope to continue to spread the word that our magazine is available to AKC Herding judges at no charge. Ihope that those who felt that it would better serve them if AKC judges were able to receive a copy of our publi-cation, do not ignore our efforts.Sad news to report to our members. Long time Beardie friend Doris Banfield recently passed away. She wasa 30+ year member of the BCCA. Both Doris, and her husband Charles, were very involved in rescuing andadopting Beardies. They attended many of the Specialties. Our Beardies have lost an important member of ourfamily. Many are off to the 2017 National Specialty and I wish all of you good luck and a safe journey. Lillian Esposito Editor BRAG FEATURE FOR THE 2017 NATIONAL SPECIALTY WINNERS 1 With the success of our Brag Section in the Performance Issue, we will be running the same promotion for our participants attending the 2017 National Specialty. my experience with performance events with my Beardies was limited to Obedience and Rally. Both of these sports are based on the premise that the human leads the team through the eventand the dog looks to the human for commands and guidance. Not so with tracking, in which thehuman follows the dog’s lead. However I was willing to give it a try to provide some continuityfor Daisy after she came to live with us. Daisy was already pretty good, so I needed to work hardto catch up and be a worthy partner. I was not at all convinced that this was something I wouldenjoy, and fully expected to do it through the summer and then graciously bow out as it got cold.As the summer went into fall, to my great surprise, I discovered that I really enjoyed tracking! Itactually was lovely to be outside in the fresh air. Our fellow trackers were supportive and fun.As my skills got better I gained confidence that this was something that we could successfully do,plus Daisy loved it and was good at it. I was hooked. I did not realize how far we had progresseduntil one day this spring, when our instructor Dawn Martin, who is an AKC Tracking judge, asked if I would be interested in taking a Tracking Certification Test. I was stunned, but trustedthat if she thought we were ready, we were ready. You must pass a Tracking Certification Testbefore you can actually enter a Tracking Test.Back to the field. Daisy got the scent, and we headed out on our first legtoward the second flag. I was trying hard not to think about our firstattempt at certification, during which we missed the very first turn. Wewere eventually called off the test after the judge determined that wewere hopelessly lost. This time was different and I could feel it. At somepoint during the first leg, and for the first time ever while tracking, I feltlike it was just Daisy and me in that field, and we were working as one.I knew when she was on scent, and I went with her when she indicatedthe turns. What a fabulous, glorious feeling when she stopped, satdown and looked back at me, her indication that she found the glove. We did it!After the Certification Test is passed, the judge issuesfour certification statements that are valid for one year. One of these statements must accompany each entryfor an actual AKC TD (Tracking Dog) Test, which is theentry-level title. My goal is for us to pass the AKC TDtest this fall, but there are very few tests offered andentry is determined by luck of the draw. Wish us luck!* Quoted from the AKC Tracking Regulations, amended toJanuary 1, 2016.Summer 2017 Performance Issue 5

The handler leaves the dog in a strange and stressful place under a positional command for a prescribed period of time. Beardie Health CEA/CH DNA Testing – Opportunity Awaits*Collie eye anomaly or choroid hypoplasia is a recessively inherited eye disorder that causes abnormal development ofthe choroid, a layer in the eye beneath the retina. An eye exam detects CEA/CH only in the first few months; after that, developing pigmentation of the retina obscures the choroid.Clinical Signs in CEA/CHThese vary from minimal visual problem to malformations of the optic nerve or eye (e.g., coloboma), retinal detachment, intraocular bleeding, and subsequent blindness. Both mild and severe forms are associated with a mutation in the samegene, NHEJ1. Predicting severity of the disease in an affected puppy is difficult. Luckily there is a gene test available tobreeders and the mutation is identical in affected breeds (e.g., Australian Shepherds, Rough and Smooth Collies, ShetlandSheepdogs, Bearded Collies).Autosomal recessive inheritanceAn autosomal recessive disorder means two copies of an abnormal gene must be present for the disease or trait todevelop. Progeny outcome is highlighted below.Parent B – normal Parent A – normal Parent A – carrier Parent A - affectedParent B – carrier All normal Carrier 100%Parent B – affected Normal 50% Normal 50% Carrier 50% Carrier 50% Carrier 50% Affected 50% Normal 25% Carrier 100% Carrier 50% Affected 100% Affected 25% Carrier 50% Affected 50%The goals of using a pre-breeding genetic test for a recessive disease are to 1. Eliminate disease 2. Gradually reduce frequency of carriers over several generationsSuggestionsOne CEA affected Beardie (in the UK and Kennel Club registered) and a number of carriers have been identified with theCEA test. Three carriers have American Bearded Collies as ancestors. The BCCA Health Committee and BeaCon suggestthat US breeders consider including a CEA test in their pre-breeding health screening test panel.CEA/CH Testing OptionsAfter review of the companies that offer CEA testing, it was decided to go with Paw Print Genetics for Bearded Collies inNorth America. Paw Print is one of 4 companies listed by OFA and it has a sublicense for the CEA test from Optigen. PawPrint tests every sample with two different methods (and a third if the first 2 don’t agree) and uses procedures for qualitycontrol that match those applied in human genetic testing.Other labs offer CEA testing, too. If you choose a different lab for reasons of cost or convenience, you should ask: 1. What test is done? For the gene mutation or a marker gene? 2. If the test is for the gene mutation, does the lab have a license or sublicense? That assures that quality control measures are used in testing as the original licensed company’s procedures are followed. 3. Does OFA accept results from the lab? This is important if you want the test results displayed on a dog’s online OFA record.CEA/CH DNA Test at Paw Print GeneticsFor a limited time tests will be available to owners of North American Beardies at a cost of only $20! Back Cover Story Shebang Ch Moonstone Kick Start My Heart MXP MJPB OFP RN PT VX & ScarlettMBISS GCHB Potterdale Jubilee Diamond NA AXJ OF RE PCD BN PT NW1 MV I’m very fortunate to spend my weekends runningagility with Shebang and Scarlett.  Our primary goalhas always been to have a good time and celebrate ourlittle victories.   At 11.5 years old, Shebang is still going strong andworking towards her PACH.  Scarlett’s agility “career”is just taking off after a tremendous struggle with tableperformance.  From the picture above, you can see thatshe’s overcome her table issue, but now barks inconcert with the judge’s count. That’s part of what has always made agility special for me and my dogs. There are always newchallenges and puzzles to solve — whether they’re on the course, with an obstacle or something specific to an individual dog.  I’mlucky to have Bearded Collies who are often able to compete well into their senior years, giving tons of time for learning andre-learning skills and performance. Most importantly, given the lifetime of impact that competing in any performance venue can takeon a dog, I am grateful to have these two girls who are made physically and mentally strong enough to stand up to the travel, training, and trialing. Finally, the joy these girls have when they run is contagious and I can’t help but smile at the end of every run. Agility can test ahandler’s resiliency in the face of failure, but with the right canine partners, every trip to the start line is a new chance to succeed, tolearn, and to have fun.  I’m hoping for many more years heading into the ring with Shebang and Scarlett, but for now we’re focused onthe joy of taking one run at a time. Buffy,“you were worth it, old friend, a thousand times over.” I wouldn’t

change a thing. ~ Wilson Rawls March 7, 2002 ~ April 3, 2017MACH2 Dunnachie’s Buffy Slays Me I could fill a book with Buffy stories.Things she did. Activities we shared. How self-assuredRN HT MXC MJB2 OAP AJP OF CLR2 CGC VX and confident she was. There was no question in her mind that she was the boss, and be- cause she saw me as her only competition for leader, she did not hesitate to tell me off when we disagreed. She was the most gracious entity I ever met. She was always kind and generous to other people and animals. At her first puppy class, she calmly walked around the room and met all the humans as if she was the hostess. When meeting a smaller dog, she would lay down to reduce her size to put the dog at ease. I trained Buffy, but she taught me. She taught me that she knew me better than I some- times knew myself. She would read my body language when I was unaware that I was tele- graphing something. Stalwart and committed, when we were done training, she would do a celebratory trot around the park. In agility we weren’t super-fast, but we were consistent. I remember one 3-day weekend our Q rate was 100%. Our agility teacher once said that we were very smooth on a course because we knew each other so well. She read me like a book. At the end of an agil- ity run and despite the fact that I was almost always behind her and still running, something about me told her we were at the end of the run. She would turn over the last jump, do a tight turn and come back to me to do a small bounce in front of me. Her way of saying,“We did it; we did it!” She had her titles, but to me, she was Princess Queen Buffy, BFF. Thanks to Kathleen Harold and Jackye Dunn for giv- ing me the opportunity to be owned by Buffy. Dawn Kinney

Cale CH Cameron’s Celtic Charm MX MXJ MJB April 20, 2001 - February 2, 2017Cale, a.k.a. Bear, knew the secret of being happy. He was at ease withconformation, herding, or just couch surfing.Teaching us never to takeanything too seriously, he introduced us to the sport of agility with anticsthat could bring a smile to the face of the sternest judge.Cale had a beautiful baritone bark that he held right until the end. With aheart of gold, he was truly a “gentle knight,” ever vigilant of his domain andpeople. If your heart was true, he knew it and was your best friend.Youcould never fool “Bear” and you always felt safe when in his company.A trueBeardie ambassador, he spread happiness and joy wherever he went.At almost 16, Cale started his journey to the Rainbow Bridge. Anna MACH2 Casanovas For American Beauty MXC MJC MXP MJP NF February 24, 2005 - April 13, 2017How can I begin …?We all have that one special dog in our lives, for us that was Anna. Calm, confident, refined, gentle, loving, everything you could ask for in a Bear-die girl. She was the rock steady head of the household keeping us all inline with her silent strength.Anna loved agility, almost as much as chewing sticks, and was enjoying“her” game right to the end. For me, agility will never be quite the samewithout my “Mouse” making me look so good. Her charm, effortlessgrace, willingness to work, and endless enthusiasm will truly be missed.Earning her MACH 2 at the BCCA Agility Trial in May of 2016 is onehighlight of her career I will always treasure. We all have our start line routines.
