On our cover GCH HIGHLAND’S PILLOW TALK ROM CH Ha’Penny Delinquent ROM x CH Highland’s Yankee Doodle Dandy ROM Lola 2017 BCCA TOP BROOD BITCHLola was the only female puppy in a litter of six, and right from the start, we knew she was special. In her very first show at six monthsold, Lola was awarded WB, BOW & BOB over a special by respected breeder-judge Pat Hastings. She continued her success in the showring earning her championship and grand championship with multiple Best of Breed wins. Moving on to the whelping box, Lola wasawarded First Place in Brood Bitch at the 2014 National Specialty under breeder-judge Kathy Pavlich.Lola has contributed to our breeding program by producing several champion offspring including her two daughters featured inthis issue, CH Highland’s Give Me Your Answer Do and CH Highland’s Pajama Game. Her offspring have achieved many awardsincluding • Multiple WB awards at Specialties • RWD at a National Specialty • Best In Sweeps & Best of Opposite in Sweeps at National and Independent Specialties • BOB & BOS Beginner Puppies at a National Specialty • Group Placements and GCH titlesBeyond the titles and the awards, Lola is a loving companion to her owner Marsha Burger; a best friend to Kathy and Joe DuPont whowhelped and raised her litters; and my partner in the conformation ring. She truly is the crown jewel in our Highland family. Congratulations, Lola, this is a tribute to you that is well deserved. We love you and thank you. Lillian & Tom Esposito - Highland BeardiesEditor’s LetterIn this issue we honor our brood bitches that are the cornerstone of our breed, our puppies that are the future of our breed, and ourveterans that most importantly, brought us to this point in our history, keeping type, temperament, herding instinct and correctstructure in our breed. Pass The Ammunition. (Bagpipes, June 2005. Ann Witte)The timing and nature of praise is critical. When you speak, the dog’s focus changes from what we were/is doing toYOU, the speaker. What I find to be most efficient is the use of “Good” (or “Excellent” if the move was exactly what Iwanted) alone. Not with the dog’s name, no “Good BOY.” In other words, the praise word minus any reference to the dogitself. The Beardie is a loose-eyed dog; in this context it is not necessarily that the dog is literally looking around. If we acceptthat an “eye” dog is controlling the stock via direct eye contact with the stock, then our “loose-eyed” dogs are controllingthe stock through their presence and pressure. The “eye” dog will usually not break that eye contact when it hears directed praise words, but the Beardie will immedi-ately break contact to look at you and listen to you if he thinks you want his whole attention. By using only the word ofpraise without the reference to the dog as an individual, he will hear but not break the thought process of controlling thestock.Everlasting Reminder. Stay Alert. With herding trial season upon us, every owner must be very diligent in tracking theirdog’s AKC record. Do you know if every qualifying run has been correctly recorded? Class? Course? Level? Score?Title? Your herding committee data group works hard to detect inconsistencies as we enter the AKC info to the BCCAelectronic herding database. We need you to do your part, too. Examples of recent problems* Credit for incorrect level, stock, or course or any mixture of those* No credit for a trial title when the 3 requisite runs have been accomplished* Failure to give credit for a qualifying run that contribute to or finish a championship!I am working with an AKC liaison to document problems so management can improve quality control. Let me know im-mediately if you find an error.ALWAYS KEEP THESE AS PROOF FOR CONTESTING AN ERROR 47o Qualifying ribbons – these have trial, date, class, etc printed or on a labelo Placement ribbons – should have same info as qualifying ribbonso Judge’s sheet – be sure it is legible and that Q was checkedElsa Sell ([email protected])Spring 2018 Brood Bitch, Puppy & Veteran Issue
2017 OBEDIENCE AND RALLY AWARDS 2017 BCCA OBEDIENCE AWARDSThe “Top Obedience Dog Award” is given at each obedience level and computed as follows: a point value is assigned to adog’s placement under each of the following point systems - Average scores, and Shuman System. Average scores arecalculated from the scores of all qualifying legs earned during the calendar year. The Shuman System assigns a point valuefor each qualifying scores. Dogs are assigned a point value (i.e. the beardie with the highest average score would be 1stplace and earns 10 points, the next highest score would earn 9 points, and so on. All dogs with the same score will beassigned the same point value). The point values accumulated by a dog under each of the systems are totaled for the year. The dog with the highest total in each of the levels is awarded that year’s Top Dog for that particular level. Each year’stabulations begin on January 1 and include qualifying scores through December 31. All statistics necessary to perform thesecalculations are obtained from AKC. Only members of the BCCA are eligible to receive annual BCCA Obedience Awards.
