On our cover CH Ha'Penny Handsome Devil x GCHS Ha'Penny Deja Harwood Heartbreaker I have come to the conclusion that Gracie, my sparkly gift from Heaven, is part Angel, part Leprechaun and part Bull! Gracie loves to play Frisbee, chase rabbits, find every inch of mud and roll in it, and play with her handsome daddy, Quinn, cousin Piper, and many Beardie pals. However, what Gracie loves most is to be “Little Miss Hot Stuff” in the show ring with her best bud, Ariel Cukier! Gracie started her show career at the ripe old age of five months, and hasn’t looked back. Gracie looks forward to many, many more times around the ring with Ariel! She also wants to earn some fancy letters after her name, so her future looks quite full! Owned by Sarah Burke Bred by Mrs. J. Letters to the Editor: (She wouldn’t stoop to chasing a toy.) Many of you will remember, Barbara Marshall,  Donbarlen Spirit did the ‘toy in the lap’ lapping, bringing them joy If it were her choice at the VA, she would do it for hours on end, Beardies. Now both of After Barbara and Garbo went, she became very lonely, them are gone, and there are no more Beardies in my life, except especially when recreation was up to me only. through a couple of dear friends. Thinking about it nearly brings me to tears; And I still find the odd water dish, there were surely a lot of them. a lot has happened over those seventeen years. A stray leash or collar, a reminder she was there. Chasing the toy was her life’s joy; And the old toys are innumerable – they seem to be everywhere. she knew exactly where the toys were stored -  When all of these are found and put away with care. Neither she nor her mother were lap dogs in the usual sense; but the two of them were - when it came to things that meant. Her mother did the tongue lapping. Hope Animal Assisted Crises He is a wonderful Beardie with all the typical Beardie Response Program traits, smart, magnetic personality, stubborn, sweet and a little crazy. Meet Montie...... One day we  passed a group of Therapy Dogs all sitting at attention in a park at a training session.  My wife commented, “Montie could never do that.”  I took that as a challenge.  And so began the long journey that has led to Montie qualifying for the Hope Animal Assisted Crises Response Program.   Montie obtained his CGC certification at age two.  He then completed Therapy Dog training with Alliance of Therapy Dogs in Feb 2015.  Montie works with kindergarten and first graders in a reading program in Grayling, Michigan.  In the fall and some of the winter, Montie works at the after school program for disadvantaged children in Martin County, Florida.

This past winter my wife saw a story about HOPE three children growing up.  With the kids grown and Animal Assisted Crises Response dogs who had responded Rockie having passed on to watch over us, we are proud to a school suicide.  She remarked, “I wonder if Montie that we can share Montie’s sweet and precious demeanor, could do that?”  Now anyone reading this knows that and his love for others to bring comfort to those who suffer walking a Beardie in public makes him/her an instant rock traumatic experiences, victims and first responders alike.   star.  So what better way to use that charm then to break up the stress of a victim or first responder? So began the adventure learning about HOPE and the work they do.  HOPE’S Mission is  to provide comfort and encourage- ment through animal-assisted support to individuals affected by crises and disasters.  HOPE AACR has been serving people affected by disasters and traumatic events, free of charge, since 2001. We are proud of the great work our teams do! On July 17, Montie spent a day with me being evaluated for whether or not he could work as a HOPE AACR dog. Montie and I were subjected to an intensive evaluation including role playing in disaster situations.  Montie successfully passed the criteria and on August 16, he will complete an additional three days of training for the HOPE Program.   Montie is our second Beardie.  His great uncle, Rockie, lived to 15 years old. Rockie was a jumper and his life revolved around playing Frisbee and keeping watch over HHEER DINNGG Sheep Camp – Fido’s Farm – 2019 From left: Barb/Rory; Deb/Stevie & Rose; Sharon/Mae; Wanda/Roxie; Mary/Grear

BISS CH Pentangle’s October 8, 2003 ~ July 14, 2019

I was so lucky to have 15½ years with this very special, always bigger than life girl. Her very creation was a matter of synchronicity. I wanted to breed Claire to Michele and Chet’s Biff. He was in PA and we were in WA, but the BCC of Canada was in Victoria BC that year; one of the few times it has been in western Canada. Biff was coming and Claire was in heat. Claire went WB and Biff was WD.The next day Claire went on to Best in Specialty, and Biff a Select. Eight weeks later she produced a wonderful litter, but only one girl, and I wanted a girl.Tess was special from the beginning, the puppy that simply demanded attention. But I couldn’t keep her, no matter how much I simply loved her, unless she was as good or better than her parents. That is a high bar, when your parents are MBISS Biff and BISS Claire. But she proved herself worthy of staying. She went on to many very nice wins with limited showing, topped off with the very exciting 2006 BCCA Best in Specialty. She was a great performance dog,“show me and I’ll do it!” (Maybe MY way, but I’ll do it!) My only regret is that I didn’t have her later in my herding career, when hopefully I would have known how to take advantage of her amazing drive and talent. She wasn’t the easiest herding dog, as she was pretty darn sure she knew a lot more than me about sheep (and I’m sure she was right!) I swore she would be “the go-to dog” on a farm, because she would always work her hardest and sheep would never escape. She actually earned a third HXAs leg. Unfortunately it was under a judge she already had a leg from.Three months later,AKC allowed three legs/at least two judges. Oh well. Tess also excelled in the whelping box. Repeat this step, lifting sit speed time would decrease, perhaps to two seconds, as the treat slightly higher and a little bit back over the head. he realized that only faster sits get clicked, and deliberately tried to sit faster to make you click more often. When each step seems easy for the dog, progress a little farther, continuing to move the treat back over the head. Now you raise the bar – only sits that are two seconds or faster At the same time, watch for a bend in the hind legs. Be sure get clicked. A case in point is a shelter dog I saw in my Intern a Box. Basic shaping Free shaping Some trainers profess to teach their entire entry-level classes using basic shaping only. I’ll admit I’m not that brave, but Free shaping is great for encouraging a dog who is somewhat we do introduce the concept of basic shaping with our “Go shut down to offer behaviors, because he can’t be wrong. to Your Place” exercise. I explain to my class that shaping is Anything he does that even remotely relates to the exercise a Zen exercise – it takes patience and close observation, and gets clicked and treated. Once the dog is easily offering that we’ll be splitting behavior rather than lumping. Lumping random behaviors, then you can, if you choose, switch to means to reinforce large chunks of behavior – capturing a basic shaping with a goal behavior. Here are a couple of free sit, for example. In contrast, splitting means to look for the shaping exercises you can experiment with: tiniest piece of movement, click and reinforce that, and build toward the final behavior. Splitting is the essence of shaping. • 101 Things to Do With a Box – You can use any old cardboard box for this, or it doesn’t even have to be a box! To shape a “Go to Your Place” behavior, set out a carpet You can play “101 Things to Do With Anything.” square, dog bed, or blanket to designate “Place.” You can actually do this without a physical object to mark the place, Your dog can be on leash, or off, if he’ll stay and keep working but it’s easier for canines and humans to succeed with a visual with you. If your dog gets hung up on one behavior you can stop clicking that one and wait for something else. The more If you’ve already reinforced your dog consistently for offered confident your dog is about offering behaviors, the more behaviors, he’ll probably catch on quickly. As he starts easily you can just quit clicking one thing and wait for repeatedly making deliberate movements toward the rug another. At some point, if you wish, you can decide on a to get clicked, you’ll hold out slightly longer to build more goal behavior based on the ones your dog has offered, and behavior. Just slightly!
