On Our Cover GCHS Highlander Macbean At Burlesque RN HT VA “Bean” We have been blessed with exceptional veteran dogs. It’s amazing to watch a veteran compete with much younger dogs successfully. Our Merlin, AM/ CAN CH Thymewinds Hocus Pocus RN PT TDI VA, set a very high bar with his consistent Best Veteran and Award of Merit wins. But then came Bean, GCHS AM/ CAN CH Highlander Macbean At Burlesque RN HT VA. He has certainly made his mark. Bean has always done well with Breeder Judges, starting with an Award of Merit at the BCCA Specialty in Maine when he was only two. In 2016, his AOM at Westminster was the only award presented to an owner handler/non-professional in the ring. Through most of his career, Bean has been ownerhandled in conformation, rally and herding. But several years ago he teamed up with Zack Helmer, and the two clicked immediately. Whether it was the ever present chicken in Zack’s pocket or his ability to “speak dog” we may never know, but it’s clear that Bean adores him. Numerous judges have assumed that he’s Zack’s dog after watching their connection. We are so grateful to Zack for bringing out his best. Last December the boys truly brought their A-game to the AKC National Championship in Orlando. Bean competed as the only veteran at nine, and after winning Best Veteran went on to compete with all the top ranked Beardies, many half his age or less. When Judge Tom Davies held the Best of Breed ribbon in his hand, it went to the Veteran in the ring, BEAN! That was indeed a very special day for all who have loved him since he was the only brown pup in the litter. At home, Bean is the goofball boy we love. He’s never known a bad day. He loves his big, squishy toys, his chicken, and his family. Although used selectively at stud, his pups share his happy go lucky attitude in addition to his good looks. They excel at whatever task they’re given. All in all he’s our dream dog come true. Laura Colombo & Pat Colombo Burlesque Beardies • 216-970-7022 www.beardies.us

Hear Her Roar !!!! On our back cover Rory BIS BISS GCHS Wildwood Kinikia Hear Me Roar GCH Nonesuch Arlin Green ‘N Gold RN ROMX x GCH Wildwood Arcadia Devil ‘N’ Disguise RN ROM From the very beginning in the whelping box, Rory made her presence known! She knew that she was special and made sure everyone else knew it, too. Rory is a happy, outgoing girl and loves showing. Starting as a puppy and now as a veteran, Rory won at Specialties and All Breed shows. Rory started her show career as Best of Opposite Sex at the Canadian National Sweepstakes; and finished her championship at the Michigan Specialty going Best of Winners. Rory has multiple group wins, as well as a Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show. She won Best in Specialty at the Chicagoland Specialty and was Select Bitch at the 2017 National, where her daughter won Best in Sweeps. Now, as a Veteran, our Rory took home the honor of Best of Breed at Westminster! We love our beautiful girl who has made us very proud. A special thanks to Lisa Bettis and Ryan Wolfe for their loving care and expert handling. Terri Stepankow Wildwood Editor’s Letter back cover photo by Joe DuPont Congratulations to the winners of the AKC Invitational held in Florida and the winners of the Westminster Kennel Club dog shows. Both Macbean and Rory represented our Bearded Collies in Group and they looked beautiful. Not to mention that both are veterans of our Breed which makes a clear statement to their qualtiy and care. Thank you Laura and Pat Colombo and Terri Stepankow for featuring Macbean and Rory on the covers of this issue. We have photos from the AKC invitational which were submitted by Janet Atkins as well as photos from Westminster submitted by Joe DuPont. The photo essays were designed by Chet Jezierski. We thank them for spending their time to bring these events to those who were not in attendance. It was nice to see many members at the Piers this year. In this issue we also run the Stud Dog feature for our breeders. It is a section that I believe will be of help to many of us. The section includes photo of the stud dog, pedigree and health clearances; and the layout is in order of receipt of information. Robin Lord also provided us with an editorial on a performance event - the North American Diving Dogs National Championship in which more than 800 dogs competed and her boy represented the Bearded Collie and finished in 6th place! Hope all of you enjoy this issue and please remember that we need your support with advertising and articles to make each issue a success. BCCA 2018 Herding Awards Congratulations to everyone. This is a most difficult performance event and the membership should be incredibly proud of our Beardies and their owners. The new course D class has three titlists and there are six new herding champions. Achieving this title is very rigorous; the dog needs: 1) two first places in the advanced class(es) of the title (e.g., ducks and/or sheep; Courses A and/or B) that has enough entries to award championship points, 2) both first places under different judges, 3) total of 15 points. To meet those requirements takes extensive training, travel, and trialing. For the record Beardie HC’s over time • 1998 – 2008, 11 HC’s (8 DC’s) • 2009 – 2017, 8 HC’s (6 DC’s) • 2018 – 6 HC’s (4 DC’s) A complete listing of dogs, scores for each dog, and awards criteria are in the February issue of the Bagpipes. The first three place dogs and herding ROM’s are presented here. Titles are given only with the first award if a dog has more than one award. Some scores are so close it is breath taking. “It broke our hearts to have to let you go to your heavenly home to run again with Hops. You accomplished so much more than we could ever have imagined and even got to compete at the AKC Invitational along with Smitty in 2015, even if it was only 3 runs before you collapsed. We didn't think you'd make it home and you were able to be with us for 2 years and 4 months longer than expected. You were one very special, quirky, goofy and awesome Beardie. “I certainly was blessed to have had Bieber in my life. He was my cute Valentine’s Day puppy that grew into a handsome adult Beardie. He loved life and dog sports, including conformation, herding and especially agility. Bieber was a wonderful agility partner with a lot of attitude and drive. I am so proud of all of our accomplishments, including the BCCA 2016 Standard Excellent award. They say that every dog teaches you something new.
