WELCOME TO PRECIS The Precis Team is glad to announce that we are presently working towards creating a monthly E-newsletter, the first of its kind, by the students of CIS (College for Integrated Studies, University of Hyderabad). We have taken up this initiative to provide a platform for our fellow UoH members to showcase their talents, both artistic and critical. We want to create a network across campus and provide a space where people with similar interests can bond. This newsletter will consist of everything; poems, stories, articles, artwork, photography, diary entries, movie reviews, columns, experiences etc. of all languages. We want everyone to step forward and exhibit their passions and skills, even anonymously if they wish to. Through this newsletter, we hope to achieve everything mentioned above. This is an exciting step for the students of CIS and we will work towards ensuring this is a success. We look forward to your love and support.

Director’s Message Dear Students, We have been together in a pandemic for more than a year and the challenging times, albeit a bit better now, continue to be a hurdle in many ways. However, we have learnt a lot from all the experiences and we shall continue to build a community that is open and is always growing. That is the core of who we are at CIS. The initiative of an e-newsletter is helping all of us to build a strong digital community. I am glad that the first edition of the newsletter received appreciation from all sections of students and the contributions to the newsletter are of good quality. I heartily congratulate the team for working together with the same zeal to bring out the sixth edition now with the hopes of promoting responsible expression, challenging ideas, peer-to-peer influence, and much more. May this newsletter too provide a voice and serve as a medium to harvest our skills for the future! I request all the students of CIS to use this opportunity to showcase creativity, explore and discover new interests and follow up on new ideas. I trust the team who are working for the newsletter will continue the good work and hope this will prove to be a milestone in the digital journey of CIS. Cheers! Stay safe. B.V. Sharma

WHY DO WE CRAVE ICE CREAM INSTEAD Now, as adults, when we feel especially low or burdened and in need of OF AN APPLE UNDER STRESS? something to feel better, that association prompts something in our brain Shreoshi Mukherjee 20IPMH20 as “Black-forest cake can make me happy”. It is your mathematics exam tomorrow and the endless list of formulae is stressing you out. You decide to take a break, and what better way to take Secondly, a neuroscience study published in the journal ‘Neuron’ showed your mind off studies than binging on some chocolate or ice cream or chips? Or maybe you are hurt, sad and tensed because you had a that during stress, certain important changes in the brain activity takes breakup. To deal with those feelings and the newly created void inside you, you stuff yourself with a delicious pizza or biryani- which makes you place. On one hand, the activity in the amygdala and striatum (regions of feel a superficial degree of ‘fullness’ inside. Relatable? the brain associated with pleasure, rewards and emotions) increases and These are all instances of stress eating, also known as emotional eating. As the name suggests, it means eating in response to feelings like stress, on the other hand, there is a decrease in the activity in the prefrontal disappointment, sadness, etc. instead of actual physical hunger. But why do we choose to binge on unhealthy foods (like cakes) instead of cortex (associated with self-control). As a result, under stressful situations healthier ones (like guava)? Well, of course because they are tastier! Besides that, I have brought you a when their self-control is quite inhibited, people look for immediate list of other plausible explanations. Firstly, in our mind exists an association between unhealthy, yet tasty foods gratifications. This too explains why we feel inclined to choose and happiness. Recall the days during our childhood when we would be rewarded with high sugar/high fat-containing tasty foods like cakes, immediately rewarding unhealthy foods like fries instead of an apple, chocolates or junk food on achieving an outstanding academic or extracurricular result. Also, all sorts of celebrations or feel-good occasions which is rewarding in the long run. are associated with palatable food. Moreover, sugar in food has been proved to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with the reward and pleasure centres of our brain. Cassie Bjork, founder of Healthy Simple Life, further stated that sugars can be addictive as they can activate opiate receptors in our brains, which are primarily activated by highly addictive drugs. Lastly, unhealthy food cravings in humans arise from the amalgamation of various factors, some of which are still under study. To conclude, using food as the go-to coping mechanism against stress can become problematic. Not only can it meddle with one’s physical health- inducing obesity, etc. but also with one’s emotional health- stress eaters often report a sense of guilt or shame after eating. Therefore, it is important to understand it and seek timely help from a nutritionist and therapist if needed. 8

Chimpu was born an old soul. He had a great understanding of us humans in the Aditi Kakkad 19ICMC04 family and always gave an old-man vibe, ever since he was young. I clearly remember this one time when there was a family function at our house. Now all the pawsomeEpisode 5: Matching Wavelengths dog owners can fairly relate to how much of a trouble it is to manage guests anecdotes around dogs who are very scared of them. 9 During the function, I had to translocate my dog Chimpu from our garden to the balcony of the house. So, I took Chimpu with a leash around his neck and later realized how much of a chaos it would be to take Chimpu right through all the people in the hallway. I came up with this plan of me crossing the hallway which was full of people by politely excusing myself and pushing people here & there. Meanwhile, Chimpu can jump the little fence and get through into the house from the backside of our house. But the plan which I came up with had a loophole that this plan was in my own head, and I had no idea how to explain this idea to Chimpu. I looked at Chimpu with confusion and so did he. Later after a split second, he pulled off his chain from my hand, went around the yard, jumped the fence, entered the house from the other side, and met me right near the staircase where I reached with a lot of ‘Excuse me(s)’. I was so amazed that Chimpu and I came up with the same idea and for once both the animals resonated with the same plan.

As an IMSc Student In CIS, Now School of Chemistry… Sarah Geo 18ICMC05 ...Let me be honest. Although I knew that I wanted to study science, preferably chemistry, for my higher ed, I never expected that one day I'd join the University of Hyderabad (HCU) to spend five years slowly qualifying towards a Masters in Chemistry. But hey, here I am, having the time of my life for the past three years of my journey in HCU, learning and growing. I've been asked to write about my experience in the IMSc course, and that's what I'll do. That's to say: these experiences are subjective. Although I had a fantastic time, they might not be similar for everyone in the integrated courses. I am a learner who learns by doing rather than simply reading—demonstrations, activities, puzzles or other extracurricular means. Most importantly, having a trusted peer group that I can rely on to brainstorm with and study together was one of the most common ways I got through many of my semesters on campus. Granted, studying online has changed a lot of that, but we do discuss and brainstorm through calls or other virtual means. Also, for any student who intends to stay in chemistry, get yourself a copy (physical or e-book, whatever) of Atkins' Physical Chemistry. It'll be there to haunt you throughout your time in the course. Apart from that, the major resources I used to study were primarily sites like LibreTexts. I would also use textbooks suggested in the syllabus and ask professors and seniors questions. 10

I've never succeeded in getting an internship through the official portals and programs. 11 Instead, I preferred asking professors I knew from my classes or the campus in general for summer or winter internships. Not only are they more likely to agree since they already know you, but also a lot of the logistical issues like having a place to stay is simplified. I believe the most significant advantage offered by the university environment is that we have a lot of freedom in how we choose to study. Spoon-feeding is not something that happens even if the professors are accommodating and supportive. Because of that, there's a lot more room to explore the subject as much as we like- through academics and extracurriculars. Apart from the academic interest, one of the best aspects of taking a chemistry course is in my opinion, freedom and versatility; chemistry is not called the central science for no reason! Opportunities in multiple industries, from textile to polymers to pharmaceuticals, mining, and even energy, open up. If an industrial position is not what you would like, options in research are available too. Teaching is also a career option. I've been able to explore these options on campus, thanks to the emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. I have a set goal in mind that I'm working towards. At HCU though, I can critically dissect my said goal and improve upon it and myself. The most significant advantage I felt I had is the freedom to explore and interact with students and professors alike. It broadened my perspective and showed me new avenues I had never even considered before. It's an experience I'll cherish!

C NTINUUM Dev Raheja 20IPMP28 Once upon a time, in some universe, there existed a small world. It was a flat world, and it wasn't very wide. In fact, it was so thin that if you weren't careful, you might actually fall off the edge. In this world lived two friends, Mr. Greene (a square) and Mr. Stokes (a regular pentagon). Both Stokes and Greene had reached this world after falling off the edge of some other flat world( which was a circular disc) after a night of heavy drinking. This story is about these 2D folks. A guy named Greene and a guy named Stokes, Bugged by questions about their world, Used to embark upon some random walks. The geometry of this land was very different and complicated from their planet. There were some weird phenomena this place possessed; for example, it seemed like the place had two surfaces but only one side. They also observed that on going round the world once, they landed just below their starting point. So visualizing this land's geometry was a fairly difficult task for them. But the two friends were ambitious, and they wanted to be remembered even after they were long gone. So just as any good scientist, they persisted. Greene and Stokes went around the world 12 But what they found was pretty absurd The land had a twist, and the space was curled This one-sided band made them laugh, What would happen, on cutting it in half!

After plenty of effort and a few \"Eureka\" moments, they had finally solved the mystery of this flat land. The next step was to boast about their findings amongst the other fellow scientists, so they went to explain what they had discovered to the wisest Mathematician in town, i.e., Moebius( who was a handsome decagon). Greene: Moebius, Moebius! We have figured it out; this world has only one side. Stokes: Yes! One can traverse both the surfaces of the strip and reach its initial position without crossing over any of the edges. Greene: What we are saying is that the surface has a 'twist.' Moebius: Congratulations!!! Greene: You don't look surprised, Moebius. Moebius: Ahh, well, this isn't even half of the story as there's a more significant twist to this mysterious place. Stokes: What do you mean? Moebius: It's just not 'space' here that has been bent on itself, so has time. Greene: Wait, what? Moebius: Yeah, you heard it right. In this world, time is a circle; every handshake, every hug, every kiss, every birth, every failure, every success, every moment will be repeated again precisely the same way. What has happened will happen again. What will happen has happened before! Stokes: So you mean to say, I will again be rejected by the most beautiful and curviest parabola I had met yesterday at the bar!? Moebius: Precisely. 13

The first Indian Science experiment on the Moon FACULTY CORNER It was in the evening of 14th November, 2008 that a group of young engineers and scientists along with senior project leaders assembled at ISTRAC center, Bylalu on the Syed Maqbool Ahmed outskirts of Bangalore to monitor a unique adventure which ISRO had planned in the Chandrayaan-I project. After the successful launch of Chandrayaan-I (Ch-I) by PSLV Head, Central Instruments Laboratory and weeks of maneuvering, the spacecraft cruised into the 100-km polar lunar orbit. University of Hyderabad The first mission was Moon Impact Probe (MIP), which was to be separated from the mother spacecraft on its journey to have an impact at a prefixed location on the moon. To read the rest of the Just around 8.27 pm a huge roar appeared in a large hall consisting of a dozen very article, visit the large data displays, as the telemetry signal from the MIP ceased to blink; meaning the MIP has done itsjob in the suicidal mission. The idea of MIP was mooted way back in faculty corner on our 2003 by President Kalam in his visit to the Lunar Working Group conference in Udaipur. He addressed, though the linktree page: President of the country then, but in the capacity of a participant, to a large group of international scientists narrating the future goals of ISRO in the next decade, a typical Kalam way of inspiring. It is during the post dinner conversation https://linktr.ee/PREC with his ex-ISRO colleagues, President Kalam emphasized that India must send a “messenger” to the Moon, a kind of IS_UoH gesture in embracing the moon. It was during the same night that the finer details of experiments to be carried out were finalized. 19 The plan was to have a color camera to take pictures of the moon for the first time ever as the MIP descends, measure descending altitude by employing radio altimeter (while laser based was more sophisticated) and perform a science experiment. As the proceedings evolved that day post dinner meet in Udaipur, Prof. Sridharan, director, Space Physics Laboratory (SPL) at Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Trivandrum had proposed a mass spectrometer which would measure the nearby ambiance as the MIP heads to the lunar south pole from an altitude of 100 km.
