Letter from the Director... What an amazing 17th season we have had! It feels incredible to be back with a full orchestra of amazing members and to be performing two live concerts this season. The dedication of our members, the outreach of our community, and the growth of our organization has given us the much needed hope and glory to overcome the trials and hardships of the pandemic. I am so grateful for the past 17 years of Moore Philharmonic Orchestra. As we complete our 17th season, I look back on the past 3 years and how much we have grown and transformed as an organization. The resilience, determination, and passion of our members and the continued support of our families and community have made what seemed impossible become a beautiful reality. Looking forward, our plan is to expand opportunities for our students and community members. Together, we can keep the performing arts thriving in our community and offer enriching experiences to all. This year we have seen growth in our membership, our musicianship and patronage, and are pleased to present our 17th Annual Spring Concert with a nod to the theme of “Hope and Glory”. We continue growth through hope and celebrate with glory our achievements. The music represents hope, community, triumph, and independence. Thank you for the continued support of the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra with financial and moral contributions so that we may continue our mission of inspiring our talented youth. We look forward to the start of our 18th season in the fall 2022. E. Kopecky

Olympic Fanfare and Theme John Williams is one of America’s most iconic composers having written music for orchestras, television and movies. In 1984, he was asked to compose music for the Olympic games to be held in Los Angeles, along with several other American composers. Soon, Williams’ Fanfare would become as recognizable as the previous Olympic theme, “Bugler’s Dream”. In 1996, NBC would combine the two to become the NBC Olympic Theme music. Williams continued writing music for the Olympics with “The Olympic Spirit for the 1988 Seoul games, “Summon the Heroes” for the 1996 Atlanta games, and “Call of the Champions” for the 2002 Salt Lake City games. Symphony No.9, “New World Symphony” Dvorak composed this popular symphony while living in the United States. In 1891, the National Conservatory of Music was looking for a director with global esteem. He left his position as professor of the Prague Conservatory to take the position, but he would only stay for three years and then return to Prague. While teaching in the States, he became enamored by the spirituals of the American South and Native American traditions. He was able to incorporate these influences with his European styles. Some of the themes in Symphony No. 9 reference Southern spirituals such as in the first movement and other themes reflect Native American influences. The most notable theme heard in the second movement is dubbed “Goin’ Home”. Lyrics for this melody were penned by one of Dvorak’s students in New York City after the work was completed.

Pomp and Circumstance, March No.1 This first of six marches was completed in 1901 and dedicated to the Liverpool Orchestral Society that premiered the work, which was extremely well received by the audience. The Trio section contains the tune of “The Land of Hope and Glory”. In 1902 Elgar modified the trio and was used in the coronation ceremony of Edward VII. Most Americans know this melody as the Graduation March. It was first played as a graduation march in 1905 when Elgar was granted an honorary doctorate from Yale University. Lyrics for The Land of Hope and Glory were suggested by King Edward to accompany Elgar’s melody. The beginning of the chorus is as follows. Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Beethoven, Symphony No.9 Fourth Movement The fourth movement of this ninth symphony, also called “Ode to Joy” is one of the most recognizable melodies in the world. It was written between 1822 and 1824, with a premiere in Vienna May 7, 1824. Because Beethoven incorporated a choir as a major part of the work, it is referred to as a Choral Symphony. The text of the fourth movement was taken from Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy”. The main themes of the poem are that Joy and Brotherhood are necessary for a triumphant life. From the first stanza of the Ode: Joy, beautiful spark of divinity, Daughter from Elysium, [heaven] We enter, burning with fervour, heavenly being, your sanctuary! Your magic brings together what custom has sternly divided. All men shall become brothers, wherever your gentle wings hover.

I’ve Gotta Be Me/ Don’t Rain on My Parade I’ve Gotta Be Me was originally featured in the Broadway musical “Golden Rainbow” as I’ve Got To Be Me starring Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme which opened in 1968. Later in the same year with the slightly altered title, Sammy Davis, Jr. released his single version of the song. His version would stay on the top 100 for more than 11 weeks at #1 on the easy listening charts for 7 weeks. Don’t Rain on My Parade was featured in the 1964 musical “Funny Girl” and the 1968 movie version, both starring Barbara Streisand. The song appears twice in the musical. The first time Fanny sings about her determination to get married despite her future husband’s checkered pass. The second time, as the finale, she and her husband part ways but she resolves to continue on with her life. Berceuse and Finale from the Firebird Suite As a student of Rimsky-Korsakov, the Firebird was Stravinsky’s first ballet score written in 1910 and later revised in 1919. The ballet of The Firebird is derived from Russian folklore where an ogre, Kastchei, captures fair princesses and turns the knights that come to rescue them into stone. Prince Ivan observes the princesses, one with whom he falls in love, and decides to rescue. He is able to enlist help from the miraculous firebird that possesses magical powers and who Prince Ivan had spared while hunting. In the Berceuse, the Firebird sings a lullaby that puts Kastchei to sleep. Ivan is then instructed to destroy the egg holding Kastchei’s soul thus setting free the princesses. The Finale, which begins with the horn solo, is the start of the joyous celebration to follow.

Understanding Moore Philharmonic Orchestra Moore Philharmonic Orchestra began in the fall of 2005, when a small group of musicians began rehearsals at Southern Middle School and presented a Winter Performance at Pinecrest High School. This small group has continued to grow, and here we are 17 years later with a rotating roster of 50-70 members. MPO is proud to have students, teachers and community members working together to provide music to the community. Since starting, MPO has established relations with Sandhills Community College, Trinity Music Academy directed by Paul & Sophia Chandley, as well as many local community groups and organizations. With established community relationships, MPO members enjoy performing in small ensembles throughout each season while preparing for the winter and spring concerts. Membership in Moore Philharmonic Orchestra is open to talented students as well as community members. There is no fee to join, no monthly tuition, and no formal audition process. Sandhills students may enroll in MPO toward elective credit. Seating in the group is determined by the Director. Anyone interested in joining should contact MPO via the website. All concerts presented by MPO are free and reflect a wide variety of music styles that strive to challenge the skills of the members. Past performances have included music by Bach, Beethoven and Bernstein as well as traditional Christmas selections for the winter concert. MPO depends on member/family participation in fundraising alongside support from our wonderful community. With this support, MPO is able to continue to offer this tuition-free program to our local area. Additionally, MPO is able to provide scholarship opportunities to students in May of each year. MPO supports music education and over the past 17 years has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to Moore County students. Moore Philharmonic Orchestra is just the place for you if you have a joy of playing music, whether you're a seasoned musician or someone who’s not played in a while. Upcoming detailed season information can be found on our website along with social media. MPO looks forward to welcoming new members in the Fall.
