DISCIPLINE POLICY It is the goal of the administration, staff and parents to encourage students to exercise self-discipline. Students share the responsibility for creating an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. Student Responsibility: It is the responsibility of the student to attend school regularly, to show conscientious effort in classroom work, and to conform to school rules and regulations. Most of all, the student shares with the administration and school staff the responsibility to devel- op a climate within the school that is conducive to effective teaching and learning. No student has the right to interfere with the education of fellow students. To fulfill their responsibility the student should: 1. Respect and protect the rights of teachers, students, administrators, and everyone else involved in the educational process. 2. Practice academic honesty. 3. Express ideas and opinions in a respectful manner which does not offend or slan- der others. 4. Be aware of all rules and regulations for student behavior and abide by them. 5. Be willing to assist in investigations of disciplinary offences. 6. Wear uniform correctly at all times, including out of school. 7. Assist the staff in running a safe school for all students. 8. Protect and take care of school property. 9. Attend school daily and be on time to all classes and other school functions. 10. Make up work when absent from school.

DISCIPLINE REFERRAL PROCESS Procedure for teachers: 1. Conference with student and restate behavioral expectations. 2. Issue classroom consequence. 3. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS General Program Dellwood Middle School offers the following full complement of core and encore classes for the general population of students. CORE ENCORE English Language Foreign Language Arts Physical Education Mathematics (French or Spanish) Business Studies Health Science Dance Music Social Studies Design & Technology Theatre Reading Family Studies Visual Art Experiential Learning Experiences All M1 Cubs are afforded the opportunity to participate in free learning experiences beyond the classroom: The America’s Cup Endeavour Program, Kids on the Reef and Python Coding. Students will spend days or a week participating in these activities. Dates and times for these learning experiences will be announced and correspondence will be sent home in a timely manner outlining details of the experiential learning experiences.

STANDARDS-BASED GRADING Standards-Based Grading (SBG) is a best practice grading and reporting system that gives students, parents and teachers detailed information about how each individual student is performing on specific learning goals (or standards). Instead of an overall letter or percentages, students will now receive a score from “exemplary/ advanced”, “proficient/met”, “approaching”, or “not met” on each individual learning goal (or stand- ard). These new grades give students, parents and teachers the opportuni- ty to specifically identify where the child is excelling and where they need extra assistance. Overall, Standards Based Grading helps... Teachers... isolate each learning goal (or standard) in order to meet all students at their individual levels of understanding. By doing this, the teachers are able to both fill in gaps in learning and push students who have already met the standard to an even higher level of learning. Students... identify which learning goals (or standards) they have met and which standards they need extra help in order to meet. This empow- ers students to “own” their learning experience. Parents... know exactly which areas they can help their child with at home so that they can assist their child in meeting his/her learning goals. This empowers meaningful conversations between parents and teachers as well. It helps everyone be on the “same page” when it comes to each student’s learning.

ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS Dellwood Middle School offers other types of academic programs to meet the educational and social needs of our students with and without exceptionalities. Students not in the general education classes will tran- sition into these alternative programs: Functional Academics Functional Skills and the Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Program. Functional Academics Program The FA classes address the special needs of those students that do not qualify for the general classroom. The FA curriculum consist of special- ized content and skills that are necessary and applicable to life. Functional Skills Program Functional Skills students learn skills to help them live independently. The skills can range from preparing a meal to learning how to catch the bus. Our students experience in real time these necessary life skills coupled with a specialized content. Autism Spectrum Disorder Program (AVENGERS) This class services students on the autism spectrum. Core subjects in are taught in addition to social and functional skills. The Avengers also par- ticipate in advisory classes, encore classes and some academic classes with their age based peers based on the students individual needs and lev- el of performance. The students who are privileged to be an Avenger also enjoy community and experiential based learning.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.) An Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.) is a written plan of instruction and services that addresses the individual needs of a student. The Learn- ing Support Teacher is required to develop the I.E.P with assistance from the classroom teacher, other relevant team members and parents. An I.E.P. is for students who have been identified as experiencing difficulty and are in need of support services. I.E.P.s should be developed using data gathered from the administration of several Standards Assessment Instruments, Module assessments and reading assessments. City & Guilds Program The City and Guild’s Curriculum supports traditional skills in Mathe- matics and Language Arts in M2 and M3 incorporating exploratory and innovative principles. It provides learners the most up-to-date and rele- vant technical skills they will need to succeed in their chosen career path – be that a job, university or an apprenticeship. Reading Program The Reading Program services students that are functioning 2-3 grades below grade level. Students that receive outside services from the Read- ing Clinic can continue in Middle School.
