Dear Friends, Thank you! We are grateful for your continued support of the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois. Last fiscal year, your generosity helped us make a difference for many living in our region. Your contributions—past, present and future— allow us to be a leader and major catalyst for long-term philanthropic assistance to the residents of east central Illinois. Thank you for trusting us with your gifts. In 2018, our Foundation again distributed Joan Dixon and Katie Bermingham more than $1,000,000, with 82% going to organizations in our region. More than 140 nonprofits received grants, program- related investments and designated fund distributions from the Foundation. Plus, 31 scholarships went to very deserving high school seniors! Our Community Solutions Incubator continues to grow and help emerging nonprofits address the needs of our community. Through our Building Better Boards work we continue to help local nonprofit board members better understand their organizations and the critical role they play in advancing their missions. On the investment side of our stewardship, 2018 took a downturn in the fourth quarter of the year. Our investments were down about 6%, but the careful attention given to our funds by our six investment partners kept the performance a little ahead of the market. In March, Angie Hatfield Marker joined us to advance our Development efforts. As a life-long resident of east central Illinois, Angie has a deep understanding of our area’s needs and the resources available to address those needs. She brought our Aspiring Philanthropists Giving Circle and Legacy Society from concepts to actual programs of the Foundation. A good portion of the year was spent learning about the new tax laws and their potential impact on charitable giving. We were able to help several donors as they thought through the many benefits of Donor-Advised funds. These funds allow a donor to make a significant, tax deductible gift in one year and distribute over the following years to the organizations that are important to them. A donor can receive the tax benefit in one year and continue to support charities on an annual basis. We were deeply saddened by the loss of two former Trustees in 2018 – Past Chair John Jones and Trustee Rosann Noel. John was recognized with our Hearts of Gold award and Rosann and her husband Richard were our 2017 Kyle & Phyllis Robeson Philanthropy Award recipients. John and Rosann were dear friends of the Foundation and critical to our growth over the years. We continue to be grateful to our loyal donors and our new friends who appreciate the flexibility the funds of the Foundation offer and how we can help them realize their charitable intent now and forever.
