YSEALI 2019 Spring Fellowship Spring 2019 Nebraska, US Write-Up by Ian Chin | ENV1 Greetings Chemsain friends. I have had the pleasure of being invited to share my recent trip to beautiful Nebraska in the United States of America. Along with 15 Malaysians, I was honored to have been selected to attend the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) 2019 Spring Fellowship for a period of 6 weeks under the theme of sustainable development and environment. The application was lengthy and grueling, but I am proud to be the only Sarawakian representative to attend this fellowship. After 32 hours of flights and transits, the fellowship kicked off in Washington D.C., the capital of U.S.A. Stepping foot on the concrete marvel feels very surreal because I have only seen it on movies and T.V. The city feels like a big museum, with monuments and Greek architecture strewn from building to building where most of the buildings have historical values and backgrounds. Anyway, moving on, enough sightseeing, it’s time for orientation. I was in a group of around thirty other Southeast Asians stemming from Myanmar and Laos to the north, and all the way south to Timor-Leste and Indonesia. All of us are here under the same theme of Sustainable Development and Agriculture, and all of us here have the same dream of seeing changes in sustainability in our respective countries. I have had the pleasure of being in the presence of such amazing and passionate individuals. We got along very well in almost no time. Alas, we were here on a mission, the mission to learn all we can from our hosts in the U.S.A and to bring the knowledge and networking back to our respective homes. Thus, we were separated into different countries with different host organizations. Since my interests were to see more sustainable agriculture, I was placed in beautiful Omaha, Nebraska – the agricultural center of the U.S.A. PAGE 11

A fellow from Laos and I got to enjoy the VOL UM E 5 & 6 | M AY & JUNE odd temperatures of Omaha, where it can be suddenly cold and warm in the blink of an eye. These temperatures coupled with Nebraska’s wide water catchments make an ideal location for agriculture – where 93% of Nebraska is covered in farmlands, and the rest is either urban, private or protected areas. Imagine that! It is in Omaha that we met our hosts from Omaha Permaculture, a Non-government organization that strives to develop the local community through spreading permaculture and sustainable land stewardship. Gus von Roenn, the founder and director of Omaha Permaculture is an extremely humble man who genuinely cares about the environment and its people. We were very lucky to have met this amazing man and to have him host our stay. I learned many things from Gus, from technical agricultural knowledge, leadership qualities and how to start a successful NGO from the ground up. A truly inspirational leader and a very compassionate man. I cannot thank him and the staff of Omaha Permaculture enough for giving me this unforgettable experience. Through the teachings of Gus (as far as I can understand without hitting Wikipedia), Permaculture is the principle of agriculture and community development in which a community develops a piece of land by observing the land, identifying what it needs, plant the crops and allowing the crops to flourish with minimal interference. This means less fertilizer and no herbicides and pesticides. Due to this, I spent most of my working hours in Omaha farming, planting all sorts of vegetables, and networking with local agricultural institutes and organizations. PAGE 12

YSEALI 2019 Spring Fellowship Spring 2019 Nebraska, US Write-Up by Ian Chin | ENV1 The trip ended with a congress back in Washington D.C. with 236 other fellows from all around the globe. We shared our ideas and our issues, but most importantly, we made friends with each other. My social media is now full of foreign languages and new connections. I even managed to meet up with the ambassador of Malaysia to discuss further on future projects. It was a hectic time, running on less than 12 hours sleep in 3 days is nothing less than blissful torture. Well this is all the time I have for sharing. I am back in Kuching and looking forward to running the community development projects assigned to me by YSEALI. So, if anybody has any interest in helping out for any permaculture projects please voice out to me. Also, if you need more information about YSEALI, please also feel free to give me a shout out or visit our ICMA blog (https://icmaysealifellows. blog/) to read about our experiences. I’d be happy to share what I know. Thank you Chemsain for providing me the opportunity to share my experiences. Good tidings and have a great day ahead! PAGE 13

The event gathered unique local vendors for a day, where the public could come and support them while being entertained by performances, and indulge in food and drinks served by the Sunnydale 1928 Café.
