Save the Date Announcements We must connect and stay connected with God in a significant and intimate way. Our God is the one who can see us through anything and everything. Being connected to him ensures that our lives align with his perfect will: spiritually, physically, emotionally, financially, and relationally. There is no better time than during the season of Lent to re-examine our lives and our relationship with God. Lent is the 50-day period when we prepare for Easter's celebration when we observe a period of repentance and death to self through the spiritual disciplines, self-examination, and self-reflection. The 50 days of Lent give us a dedicated time to confront our attitudes and habits, addressing how they bind us and keep us from being holy, healthy, and whole in Christ. Through the self-denial of fasting and practicing spiritual disciplines, we diminish the influence of these hang-ups and habits and gain the power that we need to defeat them. We fast in a myriad of ways as we journey to Calvary to die to self and be raised to newness of life with Christ. This Lenten season let us fast from negativity. Our world is saturated with pessimism, discouragement, and criticism. Fasting from negativity will help us to focus our attention on God and God's promises for our lives. I hope that this fast will teach us to speak with hope even during the most challenging times of our lives. For the next 50 days, let us refrain from saying anything negative about ourselves, others, and our circumstances and resist the temptation to complain, accuse, blame, judge, criticize, gossip, be hateful, or otherwise be pessimistic. Let us intentionally affirm ourselves and others, encourage, build-up, be thankful, praise, and celebrate. “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8) Fasting from negativity will require us to be careful about what we watch, listen to, read, and the spaces we enter. Remaining positive, despite the circumstances, is no small feat, but we can do it! God Bless You Bins Achen
Soul-nourishing Practices for Lent Fast from busyness. Take a slow walk around a neighborhood park or other natural place. Listen to the sounds around you–of nature, of people, of silence–and let your soul find rest in the moment. Fast from emotional exhaustion. When feeling a soul-draining emotion, such as resentment, hurt, anger, or fear, give yourself time and space to let it rise and then subside. Don’t judge, bury, or ignore it, but let it play itself out before choosing a way to respond. Fast from negativity. Pay attention to times when you find yourself indulging in skepticism or sarcasm, cynicism or contempt. Make a conscious effort to turn your thoughts around to something positive, hopeful, and life- enhancing. Fast from verbal violence. Look for ways to replace hurtful words with healing ones. Be mindful of abstaining from television shows, films, books, articles, and other forms of media that are filled with hateful, judgmental, or cruel words, images, and actions. “This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.” –Isaiah 58:6 –7
International Women’s Day Interview with our Parishioner A Women from the Bible The Bible introduces us to many women whose lives can teach us valuable lessons. Reflecting on the amazing women of the Bible and the many lessons their stories can teach us can be a great way to grow closer to God and learn a thing or two. And while the most famous Biblical women, like Mary and Ruth, certainly have a lot to teach us, there are countless, powerful bible quotes about the women who can teach you about God's love, understanding, and protection. Who was Rebekah? She was the wife of Isaac and the mother of their twin sons, Jacob and Esau. What did she do? Rebekah did God’s will, even when doing so was difficult. While she was getting water from a well, a man asked her for a sip of water. Rebekah quickly gave him a drink and offered to draw water for the man’s camels. That man was Abraham’s servant, and he had traveled a great distance to find a wife for Isaac, Abraham’s son. He also prayed for God’s blessing. When he saw Rebekah’s industriousness and hospitality, he discerned that God had answered his prayer, indicating that she was His choice for Isaac. When Rebekah learned of the servant’s quest, she agreed to return with him and become Isaac’s wife. Rebekah eventually had twin boys. God had revealed to her that the older boy, Esau, would serve the younger, Jacob. When Isaac arranged to give Esau the firstborn’s blessing, Rebekah took steps to make certain that the blessing came to Jacob, in harmony with what she knew to be God’s will. What can we learn from Rebekah? Rebekah was modest, industrious, and hospitable—qualities that led to her success as a wife, mother, and worshipper of the true God.
