Hello Dear Residents! Happy soon-to-be 4th of July! Our Activity Book is now at number SEVEN! We were in hopes that the virus would be over quickly but it looks like we need to hunker down for a while longer. A few of our Amenities are opening up and precautions are being put into place to keep us all healthier. Our theme of “Friendship” for this book came from you! We hear year after year that so many wonderful friendships are made at your resorts that when you leave you can’t wait to return back to all your friends made at your Arizona home. I have for many years called November, National Hug Month! We are all so glad when our dear snowbird friends return to us. And to those residents who are with us all year long, we enjoy our slower months of the summer to spend special times with all of you. We value you ALL as friends and hope that you enjoy this book. Activity Book #7 is filled with many wonderful articles on friendships; things to do with friends, ways to appreciate your friends, and places to visit in the state with friends. We’ve also included games, crafts, word puzzles, number puzzles, coloring pages, and much more. For those of you who don’t necessarily enjoy the games and coloring, pass the book on to your grandchildren or a friend to enjoy. Let’s all share and be kind during a time when we all need to feel cared for because you are all wonderful! If you have an idea or suggestion for book number 8’s theme, let your A.D. know! Please check out your Resort’s Mailchimp communications, too. There are several Virtual Classes that have been added. One is our Chefs Cooking Class, doing YOUR recipes from our recent Cal-Am Cook Books! So much fun! Be safe, be happy, and know that we are here dear friends. Let’s Party Later and Care Now!!! One Swedish study found that, along with physical activity, maintaining a rich network of friends can add significant years to your life. But close friendships don’t just happen. Tips to be More How to meet Friendly New People Even if you’re shy We tend to make friends with people we cross paths with regularly: people we go to school with, work with, or live If you are introverted or shy, it can feel uncomfortable to close to. The more we see someone, the more likely a put yourself out there socially. But you don’t have to be friendship is to develop. Another big factor in friendship is common interests. We Focus on others, not yourself. The key to connecting tend to be drawn to people who are similar, with a shared to other people is by showing interest in them. Accept you for who you are. Listen to you attentively without judging you, telling you Be the Best how to think or feel, or trying to change the subject. Friend Ever! Feel comfortable sharing things about themselves with you. As friendship works both ways, a friend is also someone For better friendships, be a better friend yourself you feel comfortable supporting and accepting, and someone Making a new friend is just the beginning of the journey. with whom you share a bond of trust and loyalty. Friendships take time to form and even more time to deepen, so you need to nurture that new connection. Be the friend that you would like to have. Treat your friend just as you want them to treat you. Be reliable, thoughtful, trustworthy, and willing to share yourself and your time. Be a good listener. Be prepared to listen to and support friends just as you want them to listen to and support you. Give your friend space. Don’t be too clingy or needy. Everyone needs space to be alone or spend time with other people as well. Don’t set too many rules and expectations. Instead, allow your friendship to evolve naturally. You’re both unique individuals so your friendship probably won’t develop exactly as you expect. Be forgiving. No one is perfect and every friend will make mistakes. No friendship develops smoothly so when there’s a bump in the road, try to find a way to overcome the problem and move on. It will often deepen the bond between you.

It Takes Two Friendship takes two, so it’s important to evaluate whether the other person is look- ing for new friends. Do they ask you questions about you, as if they’d like to get to know you better? Do they tell you things about themselves beyond surface small talk? Do they give you their full attention when you see them? Does the other person seem interested in exchanging contact information or making specific plans to get together? If you can’t answer “yes” to these questions, the person may not be the best can- didate for friendship now, even if they genuinely like you. There are many possible reasons why not, so don’t take it personally! Making New When looking to meet new people, try to open yourself up to new experiences. Friends Not everything you try will lead to success but you can always learn from the experience and hopefully have some fun. Volunteering can be a great way to help others while also meeting new people. Volunteering also gives you the opportunity to regularly practice and develop your social skills. Take a class or join a club to meet people with common interests, such as a book group, dinner club, or sports team. Websites such as Meetup.com can help you find local groups or start your own and connect with others who share similar interests. Walk a dog. Dog owners often stop and chat while their dogs sniff or play with each other. If dog ownership isn’t right for you, volunteer to walk dogs from a shelter or a local rescue group. Attend art gallery openings, book readings, lectures, music recitals, or other community events where you can meet people with similar interests. Check with your library or local paper for events near you. Behave like someone new to the area. Even if you’ve lived in the same place all your life, take the time to re-explore your neighborhood attractions. New ar- rivals to any town or city tend to visit these places first—and they’re often keen to meet new people and establish friendships, too. Unplug. It’s difficult to meet new people in any social situation if you’re more interested in your phone than the people around you. Remove your headphones and put your smartphone away while you’re in the checkout line or waiting for a bus, for example. Making eye contact and exchanging small talk with strangers is great practice for making connections—and you never know where it may lead! Self-Disclosure is the key to turning acquaintances into friends Self-Disclosure We all have acquaintances—people we exchange small talk with as we go about our day or trade jokes or insights with online. While these relationships can fulfill you in their own right, what if you want to turn a casual acquaintance into a true friend? Friendship is characterized by intimacy. True friends know about each other’s values, struggles, goals, and interests. If you’d like to transition from acquaintances to friends, open up to the other person. You don’t have to reveal your most closely-held secret. Start small by sharing something a little bit more personal than you would normally and see how the other person responds. Do they seem interested? Do they reciprocate by disclosing something about themselves?

NATIONAL FRIENDSHIP DAY HISTORY National Friendship Day was originally founded by Hallmark in 1919. It was intended to be a day for people to celebrate their friendship by sending each other cards. However, by 1940 the market had dried up, and eventually, it died out completely. Then, in 1998 Winnie the Pooh was named the world’s Ambassador of Friendship at the United Nations. In April 2011, the United Nations officially recognized July 30th as International Friendship Day; although most countries celebrate on the first Sunday of August! The official declaration invites us to “observe this day in an appropriate manner, in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities.” Of Friendship HOW TO OBSERVE Call or write a note to that friend you’ve not heard from in a few weeks or longer. Host a dinner party with friends from different communities or cultures. Play a board game or card game with someone who has recently immigrated. The game will facilitate learning both language and culture. Share your international friendships on social media by using #International Day Of Friendship and join the conversation. HISTORY In 1919, the International Day of Friendship began as a greeting card promotion called Friendship Day. By 1940, it had disappeared. The United Nations proposed a worldwide initiative in 1997 to establish an International Friendship Day. In 2011, the United Nations official proclaimed the day to inspire peace efforts and build bridges between peoples, countries, and cultures.

all linked to better brain health as we age Ronald Petersen, M.D., director of the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and another study author, noted that even the men and women in the study who carry a gene that makes them more likely to get Alzheimer’s disease had a reduced risk of memory problems if they regularly used the computer and took part in social activities. (The other types of activities weren’t linked to a lower risk of memory problems for those with the gene.) “These activities may enhance synaptic connections in the brain and induce or promote new connections,” Petersen said, adding that research is increasingly finding that lifestyle factors may help strengthen the brain to allow it to with- stand disease. In addition to attending the neurology conference in Vancouver, Petersen was participating in a Global Council on Brain Health meeting with an emphasis on exercise and brain health. Kaycee Sink, a geriatrician who heads the Memory Assessment Clinic at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and was also attending the global council meeting, noted that the Mayo Clinic study could show only an association between the activities and protected memory — not cause and effect. She said study participants who were in early stages of mild cognitive impair- ment might have trouble with these activities. “So it’s possible that doing fewer activities is a marker for disease rather than the converse — that participating in the activities is reducing risk,” she said. It would be interesting to know, for example, whether these were people who had never used a computer or previously used a computer regularly and then stopped. Nevertheless, Sink said, she advises her patients to stay cognitively and socially active. “Even if it doesn’t prevent dementia, being engaged is beneficial for one’s well-being.” Other studies have found that spending time with friends, for example, reduces the risk of depression and decreases blood pressure. “If you isolate yourself and stop engaging with others, who is going to be your social support?” Sink said. Famous Frienships JThoehsencoAnddanadmthsirdapnredsideTnhtsoshmareadsonJeeoffftehre smoonst famous friendships in American history, but their relationship was often as rocky as it was warm. The men were first brought together in the 1770s during the Revolutionary War and the Continental Congress. While quite different in appearance and temperament—Adams was a stout, neurotic northerner and Jefferson a slim, genteel southern- er—they soon became friends and allies in the fight for American independence. Jefferson and Adams often corresponded through letters in their early careers, but they later experienced a falling out over their op- posing views on government. After their camps traded slanderous insults during a nasty 1800 presidential campaign, the two didn’t speak for several years. Adams finally broke the silence in 1812 after a mutual friend convinced him to write Jefferson a letter. Jefferson responded, and the elder statesmen eventually rekindled their decades-old friendship, exchanging dozens of letters discussing philosophy, religion and politics. In a famous twist of fate, both men died only hours apart on July 4, 1826—the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. One was aGprooetuacnhd NoobMelalaruxreaatenkdnowTn.Sfo.r dEiffliicoutlt, melancholic verse like “The Waste Land,” the other a cigar-chomping comedian famous for his bawdy humor. Nevertheless, T.S. Eliot and Groucho Marx formed a peculiar friendship during a three-year stint as pen pals. Their bizarre correspondence began in 1961, when Eliot wrote Marx asking for a signed fan photograph. Marx obliged and requested a picture of Eliot, and this spawned an unlikely relationship that lasted until just before Eliot’s death in 1964. The two men bonded over their mutual respect for each other and their shared love of literature, but their letters often highlighted their contrasting personalities. Eliot was conservative and respectful, once even apologizing for addressing the “Animal Crackers” star as “Groucho.” Marx, on the other hand, appeared to delight in trying to offend his bashful correspondent, once writing, “I would be interested in reading your views on sex, so don’t hesitate. Confide in me, Tom.” The men finally met in person in 1964, when they dined with their wives at Eliot’s home in London. Marx would later write that the dinner taught him that he and Eliot shared three things in common: “(1) an affection for good cigars and (2) cats; and (3) a weakness for making puns.” The two esteemJe.dRa.uRth.orTs foirlskt mieent ina1n92d6 aCt a.Sga.thLeerinwg ifsor English faculty at Merton College, but they didn’t really become friends until the 1930s, when they were both in a literary discussion group at Oxford University known as the Inklings. Tolkien was raised Catholic and subscribed to that belief system his whole life. Lewis, on the other hand, had a more complicated relationship with religion. He was raised Irish Protestant, then became agnostic; while in the Inklings, he was working his way back toward religion. Then, in 1931, he and Tolkien went on a long walk with Dyson. As they wandered, the men had a conversation about myth and God. All three later cited an important moment when Tolkien verbalized how ancient stories were able to describe higher truths, and within two weeks, Lewis was a Christian once again. That conversation didn’t just inspire Lewis’s return to Christianity; it also inspired him and Tolkien to write The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings, respectively. The writers had a falling out while working on the books, but they continued to praise and support each other in public over the years. Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake This “bromance” began in 2002 when Fallon hosted the MTV Video Music Awards, and it was basically love at first sight for the pair. At the time, Timberlake was just about to break out from his time in NSYNC, and Fallon was still a Saturday Night Live cast member. Their relationship developed when Timberlake hosted SNL a few years later and the duo created the recurring sketch “The Barry Gibb Talk Show.” Timberlake and Fallon have since become seemingly inseparable in the media, and Fallon even presented Timberlake with his MTV Video Vanguard Award

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire This interesting friendship kicked off in 1990 when the two auditioned for the same role in a TV show. They reportedly agreed to help each other in the industry whenever possible, and their bond hasn’t broken yet. Flash forward to 2013 and the two finally star together in the infamous “The Great Gatsby.” Between those pivotal moments, paps have spotted the pair rooting on teams at basketball games, snorkeling with each other on vacations, and sitting together at parties. Their years-long friendship has withstood the tests of time, and in Hollywood, that’s even more impressive. “Every single choice I’ve made, I’ve talked to Tobey about and vice versa,” DiCaprio said to The Associated Press during an interview. “We’ve had endless conversations about certain projects and argued with one another and supported one another along the way.” Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams These “Game of Thrones” actresses met on set when they were young. They spent hours on and off set together, they often walk the red carpets together, and they even have matching tattoos in case one of their characters gets killed off. If that’s not true friendship, what is? When Insider spoke with Turner ahead of the “Game of Thrones” season seven pre- miere, she called Williams her “soul mate.” “She’s my best friend,” Turner said. “She’s my soul mate. I love that girl to pieces.” Dean Martin, Martina Navratilova Sammy Davis Jr. AatnhldeteCs MharrtiisnaENvaverarttilova and Chris and Frank Sinatra Evert were rivals on the tennis court: Three of the members of The Rat Pack: During the 1970s and ‘80s, the two Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank played against each other 80 times Sinatra, were also close friends throughout over the course of 16 years (60 of those their lives. Benefits of Working Fewer skipped workouts  Scheduling a gym session with a friend helps hold you accountable for getting your workout in. Meeting someone at the gym not only motivates you to show up, but to work hard as well.   Push yourself further  Exercising with another person pushes you to do your workout and do it to the best of your ability. Another bonus – if you work out with a friend who is stronger or faster than you, you’ll be more likely to test your own limits.   Encourage each other  We so often get in the way of our own success.  “Head trash” or “stinkin’ thinkin'” can make us feel that we are not good enough or progressing enough.  Leading us to self sabotage.  Having a friend that is part of the journey with you can provide the encouragement you need to stay on track.      Work out longer   Time flies when you’re having fun or at least when you are distracted! Having someone to chat with between sets let’s you focus on something other than just your workout making the time go by faster.   Recover together   There’s nothing worse than undoing all your hard work at the gym with unhealthy foods. A friend who’s worked up a sweat with you is likely to want to join you for a healthy post-exercise meal or snack.

Explore Arizona EASTERN ARIZONA Lake Pleasant Walking Bridge Less than 2 hours northeast of Mesa up HWY 87 is the *Tonto National Parker Arizona Forest range and the towns of Payson, Strawberry, Pine and Starr Valley Patagonia Lake (to name just a few). In this tree covered setting, desert dwellers can escape the summer heat and find it considerably cooler (and greener)! There are many hiking options and other sites to explore including; The Tonto Natural Bridge State Park-believed to be the world’s largest natural travertine bridge! The trail going up to the bridge is a moderate hike and the park has many picnic and grassy areas in which to relax and unwind. Just east of Payson is Starr Valley and the “moderate” Horton Creek Trailhead along a beautiful creek with Manzanita, Juniper and Pine trees and a host of wild flowers in the late spring. For those desiring a challenging experience head to the Fossil Springs Trail in Strawberry whose views of the Spring’s Falls will not disappoint the more “advanced” hikers! Heading northeast on HWY 60 travelers can explore the mountainous regions of Pine Top-Lakeside, Show Low and Greer. While these locations will probably warrant overnight stays, they are most definitely worth the drive to get out of the heat of the valley floor during the summer months! TUCSON ARIZONA And where do Tucsonans go to beat-the-heat in the summer? Well for those dwelling in the southern portion of the state, the *Santa Catalina’s Mountain Range on the north side of Tucson offers pine trees, hiking, vistas and more! The small community of Summerhaven on Mount Lemmon (just 1 hour from Tucson) even boasts a small ski resort in the winter months and a venue for concerts and celebrations during the summer months. Many Tucson residents will also travel southeast to Patagonia Lake State Park (between Sonoita and Nogales) for camping, kayaking, boating, fishing, hiking, and relaxation. *At the time of this printing both the Tonto National Forest range (Bush Fire) and the Santa Catalinas Mountain range (Big Horn Fire) are experiencing extreme forest fires. Please check with the local parks before traveling to either of these locations. Our prayers are with the many fire teams & crews battling these fires in our beautiful state. YUMA ARIZONA Lake Pleasant - Hikers Martinez Lake - Yuma While most Arizonans do know that Yuma can be the hottest region in the summer months; they too have places to escape the heat in June, July and August. For those not wishing to drive too far- a float down the Colorado River is right in their backyard! Beginning at Gateway Park, tubers, kayakers and other water crafts can float (or motor) down to the West Wetlands area for a day of fun in the sun & water. Just 60 miles North of Yuma, shooting off of the Colorado River is Martinez Lake and the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge (along with some infamous sand bars). Another hour from there is the town of Parker with more water experiences to be had on the Colorado river and up to Lake Havasu! And if you’re really needing a change of pace (and scenery), while not in the state of Arizona, San Diego is only 3 hours away and a definite cool-climate local of many Yuma residents (and Arizonans) to visit during the heat of the summer. This covers our wonderful state and its many places to “cool-off” over the summer months! Let us know about your excursions to any of these locations…we’d love to see some photos of your day trips and weekend get-a-ways! Have fun, stay cool and be safe!
