Success Stories-ATMA Nagaland 5 SILKWORM REARING: An ideal livelihood activity In line with age-old proverb, “Unity is strength”, a group of ten (10) housewives formed Danglam Self th Help Group (SHG) on 18 January 2011 at Dhansiripar village under Dhansiripar block. The group conducted regular weekly meetings and contributed a small amount as their corpus fund which they maintained at Nagaland State Co-operative Bank Ltd., Dimapur. With their meager savings, they ventured into silk rearing as a means of their livelihood. The contribution of ATMA in terms of financial and technical assistance has helped immensely in progress
Success Stories-ATMA Nagaland 6 of their activities. This encouraged the members in putting more efforts for betterment of their groups. To start their combined venture, the group reared silkworm producing 120 Kg of pupa in two harvest that year. They then reeled the cocoon into beautiful fine silvery threads. Extraction of silk from cocoon has been made a lot easier with the contribution of spinning machine by sericulture department. The group started producing silk yarns in large quantities and the produced yarns are used for making garments like shawls, makhelas, stalls, muffs, bags, kurtas and jackets for both ladies and gents. One notable and innovative idea of this group is natural dyeing of Eri-silk with the locally available materials such as onion peel, coconut husk, catechu,
Success Stories-ATMA Nagaland 7 bark of sword tree, teak, jackfruit, ber etc. which turns out into beautiful and attractive yarns. Natural dyes were traditionally used on cotton by our ancestors but converting this traditional technique on Eri-silk was proved to be a unique and an outstanding innovation. The resulting products obtained are on high demand with large orders of different products especially during the festivals, exhibitions and melas which are sold at different rates depending on the size and design. Though their first undertaking turned out to be cent-percent success, the group is still assisted by technical experts and designers from sericulture department. From their first venture, the group generated a net profit of about Rs.1.20 lakhs out of which they have loaned some amount to individuals
Success Stories-ATMA Nagaland 8 on interest and the rest was deposited in their saving account. The group has realized that if they sow the seeds of hard labour, the fruits they reap in reward will definitely be sweet. They are motivated to run their business on long term basis & hopeful to expand their business in terms of market & products. In recognition of their hard work and dedication, Danglam SHG was awarded as the best SHG under Dhansiripar Block during Independence Day in 2014 by ATMA-Dimapur.
