Animus 2015 UTKARSH 2013 t was 3rd-4th of October 2013 wh en U n iversit y In stitute of Information Technology celebrated its much talked about college festival, UTKARSH. It I has been a rich tradition of the college fraternity here to organize a 2-day mega cultural event, every year with great pomp and show, thus providing the students a platform to have the tests of varied events apart from the ever going academics. UIIT through UTKARSH shares the viewpoint of cultural enrichment and advancement apart from academics in these formative years of student life. UTKARSH enables the viewer’s to ride the wave of cultural shows which not only display the richness of Himachal but also gives the glimpses of a variety of performances reflecting the soul of different corners of our country. 51

Animus 2015 his year, UIIT stood a bit different from the past in organising its fest T i.e., the “Techno-Cultural Avatar of UTKARSH-2013.” Breaking the thread of repetitions, UIIT presented an amalgamation of Technical and Cultural fests for the first time in the history of the college. It was indeed a great success as it was open for all and saw the participations of numerous colleges from in and around the UIIT campus. Not only does UIIT present this universal cultural show for the enjoyment of the students but at the same time it stands strong in sending a message of ‘shared cultural and academic ties’ with the colleges and the students located outside the city of hills- Shimla. Indeed, I have never seen anywhere such a splendid show in the name of college fest UTKARSH, coherent raw artists/players/actors presented a variety of fantastic & nerve wrecking performances from folk dance to western, SAAZ- Tussle of singers and the bands, play to eloquence etc. UTKARSH even entertained competitions along its participants in different categories of performances. Those with spectacular performances were awarded for the same with a view to encouraging talents. What I was amazed to witness was the unrestricted viewership UTKARSH enjoys not only in the campus but also from all quarters. The University auditorium was packed tightly and I observed enthusiasm over the jubilant faces enjoying tirelessly the events being casted in front. Screams of joys, cheer-shouts, heavy claps filled the air around thus electrifying the performers and the viewers in turn. It was as if ‘a lively world’ existed inside the auditorium where one and all were enjoying free from all concerns. To a viewer, Pahari Nati, Giddha, Bhangra, Classical Dances were amazing performances. However Bhangra in UTKARSH remains largely a centre of all performances bagging the best performance of UTKARSH’13. By and large, UTKARSH remains a festival of great pomp and show. The last words go praising the organising of such a tremendous event. Those responsible for organising such a mega event deserve thousands of applauses. ITSA, the Student Body of UIIT stands strong behind this mega event, has done an amazing job. -Ishraque Ahmad 2nd year 52

Paper folding dance was also very funny where juniors got to dance with their chosen senior partner. All the boys and girls walked down the ramp bringing more excited to the party. The selected ones got to the talent round where they left everyone in stupefaction by their mesmerizing performances of dancing, singing and playing guitar. Animus 2015 A TRIP TO FUNCITY! The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, and so does our life. Our life is a journey and each experience we gain is a step. Life is a journey with many ups and downs, to travel the rough roads of life seems impossible without friends. Our friends are like superheroes with the super power of making us happy, and fill every moment with fun. It has been a year now for me in UIIT and I have made many friends who have made this year one of the best years of my life. Among the many fun moments we have had together, the most interesting was our little trip to Funcity, Chandighar. Our little trip to Funcity was held on 3rd of May 2014. We all live at different places so it was decided that we would gather at places convenient to all and the bus that had been hired would pick us all up and we would leave for our destination at 7:30 am. We left for Funcity in a jolly mood, singing and dancing all the way through. On the way to Funcity we made a little stop for the driver to have his breakfast. While he was having his breakfast we were all in an exciting mood and to increase the fun we climbed over the bus roof and started the photo session. After that we continued our journey singing and dancing the whole time. We reached at our destination at 12.30 p.m. and went on the rides to have some more fun. There were many thrilling rides likes the Columbus, bumper cars, and many more which we enjoyed a lot. Then we watched a 5D movie which was like an icing on the cake. Then we were a bit hungry so we all gathered and had our lunch. The food there was delicious. Great fun plus great food equals to a great day. After we all had enjoyed our meal we got ready for the most anicipated part- the water park. There were many rides at the water park, some of which were really thrilling. We demarked the rides on basis of their color. And I still remember the black, green and orange ones were the best and I repeatedly rode them again and again till my eyes got fixed on another ride. We were having a great time that we didn’t even realize how much time had passed. It was about 5:30 pm and it was the time for another fun moment, The Waves. We all gathered together and waves emerged from the far side of the pool. We all splashed on each other and jumped and threw each other in the water or in simpler words enjoyed to the fullest. All this was sadly over at 7 as we had to return back home so we all got back in the bus. We were all tired and so the journey back seemed a bit monotonous, but it soon turned into a fun time when we stopped for some milk kulfi. It was truly delicious and was the perfect thing for the moment as all those who were a bit sleepy were now back in action. It was around 9 p.m. and we were about to reach Solan when our bus’s engine failed. We were so excited at the moment that we didn’t even pay any attention towards it. We all went out on the road and started singing and clicking photos. We were so busy having fun that we didn’t even realize that it was about 11:30 pm, the bus had not been repaired and now some of my classmates got a bit worried as to what would we do. Actually their parents were the ones who were really worried. The time passed by and we had to come up with a solution. It was decided that we all would spend the night at our friend Akshi’s house in Solan. So at 1 in the night we all went to her house were her aunt had prepared some food for all of us and it was delicious. Then as we were all tired we decided to just sleep. So all the boys spread the beddings in the hall and went off to sleep and the girls slept in the bedrooms. The next morning we all woke up at 8 and got ready to get back home. A bus had been hired for us to get back and breakfast had also been booked for us on our way back home. We all had a great time together; it was a fun filled trip and we enjoyed a lot. In the end it was a great time spent together and in the end we all had great memories to cherish. 62

What The World Is Waiting For explores how indie ultimately lost its once cherished intimacy and integrity in front of 250,000 fans at Oasis’s Knebworth spectacle in 1996 and how, by returning to its roots in clubs and bars (and even front rooms) with bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines and The Arctic Monkeys, indie became respectable again. Animus 2015 It was a monotonous day at college as Harsha Sharma, IIIrd year usual, we attended the classes till lunch and Be a little then decided to bunk the rest. So the plan was…..actually there was no plan, when we are bored, we usually go to CRAZY!!! the mall ,window shop probably ,have a split meal ,click some pics…update it later ,keep a check on the likes and comments for a while and then life goes on as usual. But that particular day...to our surprise, was going to be different. We decided to walk through “Thandi sarak” stoping at Keval’s for butterbun and tea .This was going like any other day until somebody brought up “So what after b.tech..???” I am sure every group in UIIT has had this talk several times….if not every day!! It was ours that particular day. So the talk begun …we talked about the placements, preparing for CAT and GATE, joining “INDIAN ARMY”, jobs in banking and so on… One thing led to another and before we could realize, we were standing outside the Vidhan Sabha. So we started discussing about civil services. We were tired by then so we sat on the benches nearby and continued our talks. We were through the talks about the huge syllabus, difficulty, prelims and mains section of the exams conducted by UPSC, when we had the cra- ziest idea…!!! Someone said we are surrounded by people who are preparing for civils at the University Library, but we knew not of a single person who actually became one, so of-course we cannot follow them. For success, we need to have the right approach and attitude towards the goal, and for that we needed to talk to the people who have had success in this field. So we finally decided that we needed to talk to some civil servant for real...in order to get inspired (I know it sounds crazy now). For which we needed to visit a government organization headed by one. The talks kept going and we kept walking; we were not sure where to go so we kept dis- cussing the options at our disposal, until….... we saw a board saying CBI office. Yes …!! It read Central Bureau of Investigation, Shimla. Of course we got nervous and wanted to drop the plan altogether, but then we thought “Let’s do it!!!” With an impression that the SP’s (Superintendent of Police) are IPS officers appointed by the Govt. of India, who clear the prestigious IAS exams conducted by UPSC, we went inside . We were discussing how we will meet the SP and what we’ll say and were having really stupid ideas like “good afternoon sir...we wanted to know what inspired you to join the services ..??” (Creepy...!!!) 96

Animus 2015 But we forgot a little detail… The Superintendent of Police of Shimla had other important tasks as well, besides counseling some maniacs. We were standing at a corner discussing the questions, when a man in his late forties approached us and asked us who we wanted to meet. We said “SP sir se milna hai” “Do you have an appointment…??” He asked. “No.” We said. “Kaunse SP se milna h...??” (The time we realized there were more than one SP’s there) “Jo bhi hai” (laughing secretly to ourselves) “Kis regarding milna hai??” We were blank…and just when we were searching what to say, he prompted… “Personal hai...?” We rolled our eyes and shyly said yesssss…..!! He looked confused. So he led us to a room nearby and told us to wait. That was the time we realized what trouble we have gotten ourselves into, because what we could sense from the discussions around and the enquiries that followed was that …we were there to file a FIR or something regarding some sensitive issue, probably a sexual ha- rassment case. Anyways, we waited and hoped for the best (which in our case was, hoping that the SP would not be a short tempered person). Finally we were called, we took a deep breath and entered the room. A spacious room, with a big table, a fireplace reminding us of the forgotten British architecture, and there he was, sitting on a big chair…a man in his early forties. He almost started laughing when we introduced ourselves. Just a question?? How did you people know that I will be available today..?? -he asked. We honestly explained our situation. Then he started laughing out loud and told us that it was his first day at office after being transferred from Jammu, and that he was not expecting anyone especially students from HPU on his first day of joining. We glanced at each other, I almost felt like saying “you’re kidding me… this can’t be hap- pening…!!!!” To our relief he was a really humble and generous person. We had a frank talk, he told us about his preparations, his subjects for mains and other details regarding the exam. We had a really informative session and talked our brains out .The discussion went for around 20 minutes. He was different from the rest of the people there and it felt like he was what we were looking for…!!! No matter how crazy it seemed at the beginning, the purpose was fulfilled. We wanted inspiration and that’s what we found…!!! 97

Animus 2015 “When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. The idea of saying that still remains absurd “It provides hope to a lot of people, why to me. take that away from them? It helps one to overcome his grief. Knowing this, one can easily come to the conclusion that morality is anything but an aspect of religion. Quite unambiguously, religion is doing what you are told, no-matter what is right and morality is doing the right thing, no-matter what is told to you. Thirdly, it creates division in society. People with a similar religion like to stay together because of the similar belief system. Because of huge contradictions between different religions and also within the same religion, it creates a state of mayhem in society. Nor does it keep to itself. Where-ever possible it tries to ban what doesn’t harmonize with it. It expects people to follow rules that were written by men who didn’t know the earth was a sphere and not flat, in the time when the only way they could travel as fast as a few miles per hour was on carts pulled by animals, and lived in caves or fragile houses not more than a storey tall. And after all this, the authenticity of these texts and books can also not be verified. So why follow them anyway? In this world that has been torn apart by religion one must understand that he is a human before anything. And humanism is what he should consider following. The only rule he needs to abide by is the golden rule- “Treat others the way you want to be treated” and this encompasses the ethical code of morality. And about religion, it must die, for 99

Animus 2015 UIIT Sports Week UIIT sports week, after a long and grueling hiatus, was back in March this year. It was all riveting and exciting from the opening day to the end. Games were commenced in fragments at different venues and the main attractions were Inter year football and cricket matches. The charisma and the winning attitude upheld by student players was magnificent, manifesting the will to win and showing tremendous sportsmanship. Gaming events like badminton, volley ball and table tennis commenced in the first two days. The proceeding days were for outdoor games like football and cricket. The knock out stages began on the same day and in the last days, tournaments of chess and carrom took place. So without further ado here are some of the things we learned from the sports week. First two days wrap-up: The opening day was all about knockout stages of badminton, table tennis and volley ball and the next day semifinals and finals took place, so there are many things for us to dwell on. The venue was Indira Gandhi sports complex. Badminton: even the dead bird flies Badminton was the main attraction of the day and there were numerous competitors in the same making the tournament very fierce. Around 20 badminton matches took place on the first day of both men and women categories. The game began with pummeling of shuttle back and forth and continued all day long. Table tennis: the 8th wonder of the world Meanwhile table tennis was also being held at TT court; personally I believe this is the toughest sport in the history of mankind. As they say “life is hard table tennis is harder”. Criteria for selection was the same and the competition was as tough as the game itself. Volleyball: The game of smashes On the second day volleyball game was scheduled. It was an inter year tournament and held in both men and women categories. The first match was between 1st year and 4th year girls and the outcome was 4th year girls smashing it through the semifinals. And for the boys category semifinals took place between 2nd and 4th year. The game was short and interesting. 100
