Chiang Rai features outstanding natural beauty, remote hill tribes, exotic wildlife and unique Buddhist temples. As the area is largely mountainous, the region is perfect for jungle trekking and mountain biking. The so-called Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet in the middle of the Mekong River, was once a hub of opium production and trade. Thanks to the ongoing works of the Royal Development Projects, these days the hill tribe villagers live sustainably by growing highland crops such as tea, coffee, macadamia nuts, peaches and flowers as well as producing various types of handicrafts, and the region has become a must-visit attraction for international visitors.
