Not all mineral makeup is created equal What else is in your makeup? Mineral makeup popularity has boomed of recent times. Television advertising undertaken by large corporations has put mineral makeup in just about every home. As well as the Infomercials, mineral makeup has also been heavily advertised in fashion magazines who advertise mineral makeup as an alternative to traditional cosmetics. Why has mineral makeup become so popular? Simply put, it is a superior form of makeup – for the most part! Because of the popularity of mineral makeup at the moment, traditional cosmetic companies are adding their own version of mineral makeup to their ranges. However, not all mineral makeup is created equal and you should check the ingredients! arths Minerals foundations are made up entirely of minerals, which when pulped, become a silk-like powder consisting of Mica, Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and Iron Oxides. Minerals, by nature, scatter light, so they are deflected from the skin rather than absorbed by it. They are also non-comedogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and water-resistant. True mineral makeup is weightless, has a built-in non-toxic sunscreen, and looks as close to real skin as makeup can get. This is true for the high-end mineral makeup formulas, but not all mineral makeup stacks up. As mineral makeup gains popularity, more and more businesses want to stock it, but aren’t willing to pay the price for quality ingredients. Supermarkets are now selling “Mineral Makeup”, but check the ingredient listing and origin if you can!. product guide6

Especially for teenagers or problem skinBecause arths Minerals contain no parabens, talcs, fragrance, orunnecessary ingredients, it is a perfect choice for young teenage skin.As teenage skin goes through life’s changes, using a pure and naturalproduct is the best thing you can do for your skin.Don’t aggravate breakouts or skin irritations by using productscontaining anything that your skin simply doesn’t need. Many brands add ingredients to the mineral makeup to save cost andto the make the product look good in the jar. At arths Minerals, weonly include ingredients needed and if that means that our powdersand packaging doesn’t look as fancy as our competitors then that’sperfectly fine with us.We set out to create a pure, complimentary makeup range and wewon’t compromise on quality to save a few dollars or createaesthetically pleasing packaging. product guide 7

It’s all about Quality arths Minerals cosmetics are formulated using only the highest quality, cosmetic grade minerals available. This is evident when you compare the feel and texture of different products side by side and how they affect the performance of the end product. There are many suppliers of mineral makeup ingredients and the difference in quality is enormous. Just as there are different qualities and texture of fabrics, so it is with minerals. The raw minerals in and of themselves do not have any particular qualities in terms of texture, but depending upon how finely they are milled, and how much expertise and care is taken to cut the minerals for their refractive purposes, the differences in the final products are huge. There are many different grades of minerals. For example, Titanium Dioxde alone comes in many varying grades and shades of grays and whites and may originate anywhere from Canada or China to name a few. The different qualities of this ingredient is enormous. Cheaper versions may be contaminated with arsenic and lead and it’s never truer, you get what you pay for. Even though the packaging may show this ingredient, it doesn’t show the origin or if it has been tested on animals. We GUARANTEE our products are not tested on animals and we have Vegan certification to rpove it. Keeping our products pure by no means restricts your choice of colour. We have created a fabulous range of colours for all skin tones and origins. We offer an extensive range of mineral foundations from the fairest to the darkest of skin tones. Our range of mineral foundation colours was initially created for the Australian market. However, with Australia being such a multicultural country, we have now added product guidedeeper, darker colours to our range to accommodate all skin tones.8

Product Comparison There are many brands of mineral makeup on the market today. By purchasing arths Minerals cosmetics, you are supporting local business and jobs and getting an extremely high quality, cruelty free mineral makeup. Most brands are either solely or heavily owned by US companies and most are mass produced. Many companies now outsource the packaging of their products to Asia as the cost of the labour is so much cheaper. Most companies also machine pack. We pack by hand and hand weigh every product. Take a look at the labeling on your products. You only have to read the labels to see how much of our money goes back overseas. In these times when jobs are so scarce and local businesses are closing their doors, let’s do what we can to support local jobs and businesses. Our products are not packed in boxes or fancy packaging. When creating the range, we also wanted to consider the environment. By reducing the packaging, we are doing our bit for the environment and also keeping the cost of the product down.“supporting local business A word of warning regarding the actual minerals in makeup. Thereand jobs” are no regulatory laws regarding the standard of the minerals used in making cosmetics. There are many different providers of minerals and you should check carefully where your minerals are supplied from. Some brands claim to be 100% or 95% minerals and while this may be true, the quality of the minerals vary drastically depending on where they are mined. For example, you can purchase ingredients in bulk from some 9 countries at cheap prices and yes they are minerals but the quality is compromised and it is known to contain leads and arsenic. These minerals are not the quality we choose to use in our formulas. Our product guideminerals are of the highest quality and as such we pay a little more but the end result is evident.

Matte Minerals APPLICATION TIPS arths Minerals Matte Minerals can be used as eyeshadow or contour colour, or as liquid liner. To use as an eyeshadow, tip the container at an angle, and tap it until some powder rests on the edge of the sifter. Gently swirl the firm shadow brush into the powder, and then tap the handle of the brush onto the side of the container, letting excess powder fall back into the jar. Apply with short, firm strokes, then follow up with a swipe of the blending brush until all visible lines are softened. For liquid liner, wet the angled liner brush, then dip the wet brush into the powder. Make a creamy paste on the back of your hand or in the top of the container. The consistency should not be runny. Then trace a thin line around the lash, staying as close to the lash as possible. Once the liner has dried, it can be left as-is, or smudged with the firm shadow brush for a softer effect. “great long lasting staying power”16

“setting powders will assist in Setting Powdersoil absorption or shinE” While it is not essential that you use a setting powder, it can help in minimising pores or absorbing excess oil. arths minerals setting powders are a silky blend of the lightest minerals. If the foundation you use is in Light or Light to Medium colours, then our coloured setting powder would be best for you. If you use any other colours, try the translucent setting powder. Application Tips Apply before foundation using a flat top brush for heavier coverage or the kabuki brush for a lighter cover. Applying the setting powder before the foundation will assist in oil absorption or shine control. Mineral Mascara Mascara is the number one cause of eye irritation. Our mineral mascara contains no clay which means no clumping, no flaking and no smudging. Mineral Mascara is a silky, lash-defining and weightless mascara providing all day colour. Perhaps best of all is that this mascara is paraben free. Application Tips Apply mascara at the lash base then wiggle the comb through to the tips. Wiggle the mascara wand from left to right at the base of your lashes. Most people apply more mascara at the tips of the lashes. It’s the mascara placed near the roots -- not the tips -- that gives the illusion of length. Pull the wand up and through lashes, wiggling as you go. Wiggling separates lashes. Try a Lash comb. These are a great invention and keep lashes glob-free and perfectly separated. Blue mascara brightens blue eyes while purple mascara makes brown eyes pop. Why not try a coloured mascara? Black works for everyone but can be a little harsh for some. Use an eyelash curler. Curling lashes gives eyes the appearance of being wider and brighter. You can now buy heated eye lash curlers.20

“purple mascara makes brown Touch it first to make sure it’s not too hot. It’s a myth that you have to curleyes pop” lashes before you apply mascara. You can curl lashes after mascara application, just make sure the mascara is dry first. For a dramatic look, apply mascara only to the upper lashes. To make eyes seem wider, apply to the bottom, too. But make sure you give lashes a light touch. Not great at getting those bottom lashes? Try putting a tissue under them before application. If you need to apply a second coat, do it before the first coat dries, otherwise you’ll get clumps. Do not pump wand in and out of the tube. This only introduces air into the tube, which will cause your mascara to dry out sooner than it should. Wait five seconds before blinking. This will avoid accidentally getting mascara on your eye lids. MASCARA PRIMER Primers coat lashes and separate them before you apply mascara. Makeup artists swear by mascara primer. Our Mineral Primer is natural and contains no chemicals. product guide 21

Blend a small amount of your foundation with a little moisturiser to create a crème. Use the shadow brush to apply a small amount of the crème to area. Angled Liner Brush This is a very versatile brush and has a multitude of uses. Use this brush to apply wet eyeshadow to create an eyeliner or to fill in the brow for a perfect eyebrow finish. Wet the tip, dip it into your powder of choice, and then mix. This brush can make a thin or a thick line by changing the pressure. Clean brushes with mild liquid soap or shampoo. Because of the high content of titanium and zinc oxide in our foundations you are also provided with an inbuilt sun protection. The product is water resistant and won’t ‘run’ like traditional foundations if you perspire. Testimonial ….”I purchased Earths Minerals after hearing about it from a friend who was using it. I brought it with the intention of helping my teenage son who was suffering with pimples. I emptied the powder into an old white jar I had from the chemist. I told my son it was a new treatment for pimples. We mixed the powder with moisturiser and blended it into his skin. It was almost unseen. The cream completely hid the redness and pimples and I think it actually healped in healing his acne. Even if it didn’t, it was so good for his confidence and he was no longer embarrassed with red pimples. To this day I have not told him it was makeup we put on his face”. product guideMichelle, Queensland

“BISMUTH OXYCHLORIDE chemically Bismuth Oxychlorideresembles arsenic and antimony” The following information is extracted from Wikipedia and is presented for your information only. Bismuth is a chemical element that has the symbol Bi and atomic number 83. This trivalent poor metal chemically resembles arsenic and antimony. Bismuth is heavy and brittle; it has a silvery white color with a pink tinge due to the surface oxide. Bismuth is the most naturally diamagnetic of all metals, and only mercury has a lower thermal conductivity. It is generally considered to be the last naturally occurring stable, non-radioactive element on the periodic table, although it is actually slightly radioactive, with an extremely long half-life. Bismuth compounds are used in cosmetics, medicines, and in medical procedures. As the toxicity of lead has become more apparent in recent years, alloy uses for bismuth metal as a replacement for lead have become an increasing part of bismuth’s commercial importance. Bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) effect pigments are produced by hydrolysis of very acidic bismuth salt solutions in the presence of chloride. The crystal quality can be adjusted by the chosen reaction parameters, such as bismuth salt concentration, temperature, pHvalue, reactor geometry, and addition of surfactants. The usually tetragonal bipyramidal crystal geometry can be flattened to platelets with high aspect ratio. Pigments with an aspect ratio of 10–15 show low luster and very good skin feeling and are used as fillers in cosmetics. Crystals with higher aspect ratio show strong luster and are mainly used for nail polish. The low light stability, the fast settling behavior caused by a density of 7.73 g/cm³, and the lack of mechanical stability limit the use of bismuth oxychloride in technical applications. Therefore, it is mainly used in cosmetics, but also in buttons and jewelry. The current world market is about 400 t per year. product guide26

Carmine From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.Carminic acidCarmine, also called Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I.75470, or E120, is a pigment of a bright red color obtained from thecarminic acid produced by some scale insects, such as the cochinealand the Polish cochineal, and is used as a general term for a particularlydeep red color of the same name. Carmine is used in the manufactureof artificial flowers, paints, rouge, yoghurt, cosmetics, food additives, and crimson ink.Carmine may be prepared from cochineal, by boiling dried insects inwater to extract the carminic acid and then treating the clear solutionwith alum, cream of tartar, stannous chloride, or potassium hydrogenoxalate; the coloring and animal matters present in the liquid are thusprecipitated. Other methods are in use in which egg white, fish glue, orgelatine are sometimes added before the precipitation. AllergyCarmine is used as a food dye in many different products such as juices, ice cream, yogurt, and candy, and as a dye in cosmetic products suchas eyeshadow and lipstick. Although principally a red dye, it is found inmany foods that are shades of red, pink, and purple. As a food dye ithas been known to cause severe allergic reactions and anaphylacticshock in some people.Food products containing carmine-based food dye may prove to be aconcern for people who are allergic to carmine, or people who choosenot consume any or certain animals, such as vegetarians, vegans, andfollowers of religions with dietary law (e.g. kashrut in Judaism and halaalin Islam). 27

“Parabens can, however, Parabens cause skin irritation” From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.28 Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bacteriocidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives. Their efficacy as preservatives, in combination with their low cost, their long history of safe use and the unproven efficacy of natural ingredients like grapefruit seed extract (GSE), probably explains why parabens are so commonplace. They are becoming increasingly controversial, however, and some organizations which adhere to the precautionary principle object to their everyday use. Parabens are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid, from which the name is derived. Common parabens include methylparaben (E number E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216) and butylparaben. Less common parabens include isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, benzylparaben and their sodium salts. The general chemical structure of a paraben is shown at top right, where R symbolizes an alkyl group such as methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl. Toxicology Parabens are considered to be safe because of their low toxicity profile and their long history of safe use; however, a few recent studies have begun to challenge this view[8]. Studies on the acute, subchronic, and chronic effects in rodents indicate that parabens are practically nontoxic. Parabens are rapidly absorbed, metabolized, and excreted. The major metabolites of parabens are p-hydroxybenzoic acid (pHBA), p-hydroxyhippuric acid (M1), p-hydroxybenzoyl glucuronide (M3), and p-carboxyphenylsulfate (M4). Allergic reactions In individuals with normal skin, parabens are, for the most part, nonirritating and non-sensitizing. Parabens can, however, cause skin irritation and contact dermatitis and Rosacea in individuals with product guideparaben allergies, a small percentage of the general population.

“EARTHS Minerals is the only one Testimonials that really works for me.” I need to be careful about the cosmetic products that are presented to30 the Plastic Surgeon for approval for use by our patients. Our patients expect the best and that is what we aim to deliver to them. I have been using mineral makeup for a couple of years now, however, after trying Earths Minerals mineral makeup I was amazed at the quality, colours, and sheer but complete coverage, especially great for red areas and on my sensitive skin. People remarked at how natural yet radiant I looked and of course we now stock this line exclusively in our Practice. • Sonja Minic, Business Manager, Plastic Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon I have been using Earths Minerals make up for a week now, I must say coming from someone who hardly wears makeup restricted to special occasions only because my skin is so sensitive and usually breaks out the next day it becomes so itchy, red and blotchy. I tend to stay away from it. Over the years I have wasted so much money on all different types of “hypo-allergenic” make up and other so called “mineral” makeup only to be disappointed. Earths Minerals is the only one that really works for me. I was thrilled to finally find a makeup which is not only easy to use, looks great and most of all feels fantastic because you can’t feel it on the skin it’s so light and looks so natural. I found the foundation powder mixed with a small amount of moisturiser a great concealer not limited to colours such as fair, medium and dark as with most brands of concealer or trying to colour match it to blend with your foundation. With Earths Minerals the concealer is the same product you use for the foundation it’s that simple. It also comes off the skin so easily, a moist wipe is all it takes to remove every last trace of foundation to eye makeup in a few seconds. My makeup drawer has been refined to a couple of selected Earths Minerals products and a couple of brushes instead of a draw full of makeup that clogs the skin and makes you feel awful. I have thrown out a whole vanity drawer full of other makeup. What more can I say but if you use make up every day try it you will be surprised how much time you save and to all the people like me, after one demo try it. It is so easy to look great every day and takes no more than a few minutes right before you race out the door. Thanks to Earths Minerals I can look good every day. Joanne Defina
