Ananda Meditation Retreat The Ananda Meditation Retreat is welcoming Personal Retreatants once again. With strict guidelines we are very happy to be able to accommodate all those souls who are looking for a retreat such as ours. A lovely woman called today who had reserved a stay at a retreat on the coast but with the fires so close, they had to shut down their facility completely. The gratitude she has for us accepting her was truly amazing. People need what Ananda has to give and even the little bit we can offer is balm to these souls. Thank you Divine Mother! So please let your friends and people you may meet that are looking for such a place to seclude and be in the quiet of nature, that we might be able to help them. They can call the office to register. (478-7557) They won’t be able to book online. Blessings, Durga and Vidura and the retreat staff. The Villager, August 27—September 10, 2020 6

Jairam Commutation Letter Campaign Dear Ones, Thank you everyone for adding your energy to the Jairam Letter Campaign. We are so happy to share that Ana mailed the last batch of letters off to Jairam's commutation lawyer, Tracy Lum, on Wednesday, August 26th. Including all of the standard letters, we were able to submit 518 letters in total to be included in the commutation application! HOORAY! What a feat! Jairam will be receiving a copy of all of these letters, and we are sure it will warm his heart to viscerally feel the love and support from all of you. Tracy is hard at work compiling the commutation application. She will submit the application in full (along with all of your letters) by September 1st! We will surely keep you abreast of any updates as we all ride this experience together. Please continue to keep Jairam, Tracy, Governor Newsom, and everyone else involved with this matter in your prayers. We are deeply grateful! With thanks and blessings, Ana, on behalf of The Letter Writing Campaign Team The Villager, August 27—September 10, 2020 9

Music Department Update Dear spiritual family, We’ve, of course, been feeling deeply impacted by the fires throughout California. We’re praying, but have also been feeling the urge to take some additional action. In pondering the situation these words came to mind: Cool clouds that gather to bless us. Mist hands that soothe away pain. And so we’ve decided to do what we can to flood the world with P eace, as sung by Swamiji; to help cool down, calm, and sooth our planet and everyone/everything on it. If you’d like to help, simply share this video wherever and as often as you feel to. Amen. Amen. Bhagavati & Ramesha The Villager, August 27—September 10, 2020 11

PEACE b y Swami Kriyananda 12 Peace gave us the mountains. Peace gave us the sky. Nightly, when starlight enfolds us, Peace is its lullaby. Amen. Amen. Peace gave us the morning. Peace gave us the sun. Bird songs that call us to welcome Day, and fresh labors begun. Amen. Amen. Peace gave us the seasons. Peace gave us the rain— Cool clouds that gather to bless us, Mist hands that soothe away pain. Amen. Amen. Peace gave us our hearts’ love. Peace gave us our smiles: Rays of God’s presence within us. Light that all strife reconciles. Amen. Amen. The Villager, August 27—September 10, 2020

Ananda Village — Sharing Who We Are Welcome Mary and Lynn Dossett! Lynn and Mary Dossett have recently moved to the Village, a move that brings them back “home” to California where they have lived the longest of the several places they have been. Most recently, Mary was the Spiritual Director for Ananda Tucson and was nurturing efforts in Phoenix for those interested in Master’s teachings. Ordained as a Minister during the 50th celebration, she has also taken Living Discipleship and now serves with Niranjana and the team re-imagining the program for a new reality. While living at the Village, she maintains her full-time job, working remotely for Tucson Electric Power. She has been bringing the teachings to work in many ways, including leading a drop in meditation group twice a week (over zoom since the pandemic began). Mary enjoys music, gardening and cooking/baking — and is looking forward to seeing how her sourdough starter (started in Arizona) may change now that it’s in Northern California! Lynn, retired from a career in telephony and computer systems analysis, has also been a dedicated volunteer for over 30 years, serving to protect the health and safety of others. He has been a volunteer EMT, Rescue Truck driver and has held many positions in the Coast Guard Auxiliary (even in Arizona!) While in Seattle, he and Mary were very active in the Auxiliary and enjoyed teaching a monthly class on boating safety to the public. Years as live-aboards and sailors provided plenty of stories for them to weave into their classes. Lynn enjoys reading (sci-fi and history) and looks forward to bike riding, star gazing and bird-watching. They look forward to integrating into the community, meeting friends old and new, and finding opportunities to serve. *Editor’s note: Would you like to share a little about yourself? Ananda Village — Sharing Who We Are Madeline Simpson When I came to Ananda Village for the first time in October 2017 to explore the possibility of becoming a Yoga Therapist, the spirituality behind the program drew me closer. After just a few days, I was certain this was the place for me. I began forming a plan to pursue my dream to become a Yoga Therapist and focus on my spiritual growth. I had been a practicing Nurse for 33 years and a yoga instructor for 13. It seemed like the perfect fit. It took me a while to get back to Ananda, as life threw various challenges in my direction. I arrived back in May 2019 to continue my journey. I lived here alternating between my yoga therapy classes and the Karma Yoga program. Paramhansa Yogananda’s teachings spoke to my spirit, and I became a disciple in June 2019. A community whose foundation is meditation and service though attunement with the Guru is perfect for me. When COVID hit in March 2020, I was blessed to stay at Ananda, continuing to serve as needed in the community—in the Market, as a personal shopper, and delivering lunches— as well as working with Karuna. I received Kriya on July 3rd. I am from New Jersey and have a son, a daughter, and 4 grandkids. I love the outdoors —camping, hiking, swimming, and biking. I also like to paint and color, to cook - especially for others, and to travel to see how different cultures live and the common threads uniting us all. I love to serve others, and I’m grateful to have the support of the community. Love and Light to All, Aum Aum Aum. Madeline The Villager, August 27—September 10, 2020 14
