INTRODUCTION A big welcome to the UK Challenge presented by United Airlines, hosted by Stirling University and set in and around stunning Scotland. The Marco Polo team hope you enjoy the experience and work hard to deliver the competitors an event that their months of training deserve. Some of you are marshals who are joining us for the first time and you may well be feeling a little daunted by what the event will entail. Don’t worry! The folk at the UK Challenge are a very welcoming bunch and you’ll be in extremely capable hands with our Stage Managers (John Britton and Scott Richardson), Assistant Stage Managers (Jonathan Sigsworth and Jim Bellinger), our Stores Manager (Mark Wright) and our Start and Finish Manager (Lara Kazakos). Your enthusiasm and support is invaluable to us and we thank you for taking your first steps into the wonderful world of the UK Challenge. This manual has been designed to explain every stage from a marshal’s point of view. Your Stage Manager will brief you according to this manual and it should answer most questions; however if you are not 100% sure about anything then please ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question only the one that is never asked! This manual is yours to annotate as you wish. Work hard, enjoy the atmosphere of what should be a fantastic event and I’ll see you on the dance floor on Saturday night… SIGNATURE HERE - Richard Richard Walker Operations Manager 3

THIS MANUAL CONTAINS SENSITIVE INFORMATION The contents of this manual should not be divulged to any other person or persons other than UK Challenge employees, marshals or suppliers. Due the nature of our events it is critical that no team gains access to any of the information contained in the marshal manual. We make every effort to keep the contents of the course a complete secret until Team Captains’ Briefing or, in some cases, the start of the stage. Please keep your manual with you at all times during the event to prevent teams, team leaders or third parties getting hold of stage information before the intended time of release. GENERAL INFORMATION YOUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR HEALTH & SAFETY > Take reasonable care of yourself and of anyone else who may be affected by your work. > Co-operate with your manager in health and safety matters, including risk assessment and implementation of any controls identified. > Do not take risks that may endanger yourself or others. > Do not interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health and safety, fire or first aid. > Report accidents, faults and deficiencies to your Stage Manager. > Seek advice if in doubt about the adequacy of any safety arrangements. > Attend any Marshal briefing where Health & Safety instructions are given. COURSE > Assistance: do not assist teams in any way in respect to the course – ALWAYS refer them to their Mission Notes. > Dipping: it is NOT your responsibility to check if teams have dipped correctly. If a team is unsure – tell them to dip again or write down the code on the receiver. If they ask how many of them need to dip, refer them to their Mission Notes. > Lost teams: unless the stage has closed you may not assist teams with directions. Often the points you are manning are numbered and this will help teams. Part of the challenge is navigation. Teams must work this out for themselves. > Teams in distress: teams have been informed in their notes that in the event of an accident they should make their way to their last known manned location if this is possible. This may be you.  They may also signal distress on their whistles by blowing 6 times in a minute; if you hear this do not move from your location.  Marshals should respond and radio to inform the Course Director / Operations Manager.  Should the marshal be unable to raise the Course Director, they should call the Operations Manager, then the Stage Manager.  If you encounter a team in distress, follow the Emergency Procedure outlined on page 7. > Stage timings: you will be informed of the stage start and finish time over the radio. At stage close time all points close. Therefore you must not give / take information from teams nor are they allowed to dip. After stage close time you may assist teams with directions to the finish (if you know them) but this is all. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF ANYTHING, RADIO THE STAGE MANAGER OR OPERATIONS MANAGER – DO NOT IMPROVISE NEW RULES. EQUIPMENT > You will sign for some equipment at the start of the event. You must return certain items and may keep others. This will be made clear at time of issue. Please ensure you return all equipment. > You may be issued with equipment for a stage (e.g. radio). Please ensure you return this equipment to your Stage Manager personally, unless otherwise advised by them, after the stage has finished. If you have been given a control card you must return it to the Stage Manager after the stage. It will contain vital information about the stage. 5

PERSONAL > If you have any personal problems before, during or after a stage, contact your Stage Manager who will then inform a member of the UK Challenge staff. > Teams that reach your position will be under considerable pressure; they will be tired and could be agitated. Should a team be overly hostile, aggressive, argumentative or use excessive language towards you please remain calm and controlled and once the team has moved on and when it is possible, write a brief account of the situation, what was said and the team(s) involved. We don’t accept this kind of attitude and a member of the UK Challengeteam will take the matter up with the team(s) concerned and deal with it appropriately. THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE LIFTING, CARRYING OR MOVING OBJECTS > You may be required to lift, carry or move objects as part of your role e.g. bikes, canoes etc. Please consider the following factors before lifting, carrying or moving: E - Environment Look out for uneven ground, poor light/darkness, spacial awareness in tight areas and the height variations of work surfaces. L - Load The weight, dimensions, contents, how easy the object is to grip. I - Individual Capability Your tiredness, physical strength and any injuries. Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. T – Task/Time How often does it need doing, the distance to be moved and whether there are people around to assist. E – Equipment/ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Check any equipment you are provided with before using it, e.g. ladders, trolleys, gloves. > Ensure your body position is correct when lifting: CHIN UP - HEAD UP SENSIBLE USE OF BODY-WEIGHT ARMS & LOAD CLOSE TO THE BODY STRAIGHT BACK FLEXIBLE KNEES FIRM GRIP CORRECT POSITION OF 6 THE FEET

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE MARSHAL PROCEDURE Radio the Course Director with the following information: > Location of incident > Time of incident > Names and or team number of those involved > Any actions taken to date (e.g. resuscitation) > Any other people contacted > Names and contact details of those nearest to the incident > Summary of access to incident e.g. uneven ground, nearest road etc. If you are unable to raise the Course Director, you should call the Operations Manager, then the Stage Manager. They will coordinate the medical response accordingly. At no point should a marshal administer First Aid. You are not authorised to do so. The best assistance you can offer is to follow the emergency procedure. MARSHALS NOT INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT SHOULD NOT TALK ON RADIOS DURING AN EMERGENCY. COURSE DIRECTOR PROCEDURE The Course Director will: > Advise Marshals involved > Liaise with the paramedics and Emergency Services > Convene a Crisis Committee (if required). MARSHALS NOT INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT SHOULD NOT TALK ON RADIOS DURING AN EMERGENCY. In the event of an emergency during an event, it may be necessary to evacuate a stage area (including or excluding the Start / Finish area). This may be in the event of an incident that poses immediate danger to those in the area e.g. a forest fire, or a legal requirement to close down the stage as requested by the authorities. SUGGESTED COURSE OF ACTION Course Director alerted to incident requiring the evacuation of a course and takes following steps: > Calls emergency services. > Liaises with Crisis Committee and confirms meeting point with core staff (suitable evacuation points & meeting points to be pre-agreed). 7

IF NO IMMEDIATE DANGER TO TEAMS / MARSHALS: There are many steps in this process and those that are particularly appropriate for a marshal are listed below: > Course Director instructs all marshals to send any team reaching their location immediately to the Start / Finish (whichever is the most appropriate if not co-located) via the shortest possible route. > Marshals should advise teams that (i) there has been an incident requiring us to close down the course as a precautionary measure (ii) there is no need for alarm (iii) they should check in with the Start / Finish marshals on arrival at the Start / Finish (iv) they will receive further communication at the Start / Finish. > Marshals note all teams they have requested to proceed to the Start / Finish and at what time. > Course Director communicates what is happening to all substitutes at the Start / Finish. > Start / Finish marshals record teams as they arrive back at the Finish. > Teams (with substitutes) are requested to return to the Event Base and check in with the Team Liaison Manager at X location on arriving at the Event Base and that a TCB will be given at X time in X location. > Meanwhile, Stage Manager picks up marshals as per their existing plan once all teams are accounted for and confirms with Course Director when the course is clear. IF THERE IS IMMEDIATE DANGER TO TEAMS / MARSHALS: There are many steps in this process and those that are particularly appropriate for a marshal are listed below: > Course Director instructs all / some marshals to hold any team reaching their location (if only some marshals to hold teams depending on the incident, the other marshals to inform teams to proceed immediately to x location via the shortest possible route). > Marshals should advise teams that (i) there has been an incident requiring us to close down the course as a precautionary measure (ii) there is no need for alarm (iii) they must check in with the marshal on arrival at x location and (iv) they will receive further communication at that location. > Marshals to note all teams they have requested to proceed to other points and at what time. Marshals at the locations holding teams to log all teams being held at their location. > If a marshal location needs to be evacuated, the marshal should put up their Emergency Evacuation sign and then proceed to their nearest safe manned location, as advised by the Course Director. > Key members of staff meet at points where teams are being held (to be pre-agreed with the Course Team). Once all teams are accounted for, teams to be escorted back to the Start / Finish or another suitable meet point as appropriate. > Start / Finish marshals record teams as they arrive back at the Start / Finish. > If marshals are still on course, Stage Manager picks up marshals & confirms with Course Director when course clear. 8

IF AN EVACUATION OF THE START / FINISH AREA IS REQUIRED: > Core staff move to a nearby appropriate control centre – all kit left behind. Course Director to communicate to all staff the location of the control centre. > Substitutes to walk OR drive team vehicles (as appropriate) to a pre-agreed nearby meet point. Ideally, the control centre and team meet point will be co-located. > A roll call should be taken at the meet point. Roll call to be continuous until all teams accounted for. > Simultaneously (if required), the course should be evacuated as per procedure above, with teams escorted to the meet point to meet with their substitutes OR substitutes drive to locations to pick up team members. IF THERE IS A FATALITY ON THE COURSE: In the event of a fatality on the course, we may be required by the authorities to evacuate the course. The Course Director will communicate the necessary course of action to be taken.
