HISTORY OF ARCHERY Archery has been around since the ancient times when Egyptians and Nubian cultures used archery as a way to protect themselves and to hunt for food. The earliest evidence of archery that could be found by archeologists dates back to 10,000 BC which was around the late Paleolithic period. In China, archery appeared during the Shang Dynasty. During the Zhou dynasty however, archery was something the nobility viewed as a sport and an art form as they had mixed in elegant salutations during the tournaments they held. Archery was later on introduced to Japan. Archery is now seen as a recreational sport. History of Archery Page 4

ARCHERY IN OLYMPICS Archery first appeared in the Olympics during 1900 and again in 1904, 1908, and 1920. Archery was removed from the Olympics for 52 years due to the lack of nations that participated. In 1931 France, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland, the United States, Hungary, and Italy formed the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l’Arc (Now the World Archery Federation as of 2011) with the goal to make archery a regular sport in the Olympics. In 1972, archery was reintroduced to the Olympics with a new format and set of rules. During this time there were only 2 divisions. The Men’s division and the Women’s division. It has since then become a regular tournament in the Olympics and the World Archery Federation handles all archery related business in the Olympics. Archery in Olympics Page 6

EQUIPMENTS IN ARCHERY 1.) Bow- There are many types of bows such as the traditional, longbow, crossbow and composite bows, but there are two types of bows that is commonly used. The recurve bow and the compound bow. TWO TYPES OF ARCHERY BOW Recurve- The recurve bow is the only bow accepted for use in the Olympics. Recurve bows do not usually have any extra accessories to assist the archer when aiming like a compound bow does. Compound- The Compound bow is very popular because it does not exhaust or put as much weight a recurve bow does on the archer. The main difference between a recurve bow and a compound bow is the string. Recurve bowstrings are tied at each end while the compound bowstring has pulleys attached to it. The release of the arrow also does not rely solely on the fingers of the archer but with the release aid. Equipments in Archery (Bows) Page 12

The Pile which is the tip or point, the shaft which is the body of the arrow, fletchings which are the plastic or feather attachments at the end of an arrow that help stabilize the arrow after it is shot, and the nock which is a u-shaped groove the is used to clip the bow onto the string to ensure that the arrow will receive the force and not the bow. 3.) Target- The target has five colors, white, black, blue, red, and yellow. Each color indicates how far or how near the bullseye the arrow placed. The target is usually made of thick straw or foam. EQUIPMENTS IN ARCHERY ACCESSORY ITEMS: 1.) Bracer- The bracer ensures that no clothes are in the way and that your fore arm is covered to avoid getting slapped or hit by the bowstring. 2.) Arm Guard- This is used to protect the arm holding the bow. Usually after releasing the bowstring, it hits the exposed skin of the inner arm or fore arm. 3.) Finger tab (Glove)- This is used to avoid chafing of the skin on the fingers that release the bowstring. 4.) Quiver (Bow and Arrows)- Holds arrows and bow when not in use. RULES & REGULATIONS The main objective of archery is to to shoot arrows as close as possible to the center of the target. RULES & REGULATIONS FOR ARCHERY Archers must comply to all official rules in terms of the equipment they use in the performance of their sport, with the main emphasis that they do not use any equipment or accessories that gives them an unfair advantage over an opponent. Two minutes is the maximum time that is permitted to shoot an end of three arrows, and four minutes for an end of six arrows. Athletes may not raise the bow arm until the signal to start is given and penalties can be given – in the form of points forfeits – if the bow is drawn after the official practice has been closed. An arrow cannot be re-shot under any circumstances. The arrow cannot be considered to have been fired if it falls off the bow or misfires, or if the target hits or falls over it. In such circumstances, additional time would be given. Rules & Regulations Page 18

RULES & REGULATIONS An arrow that bounces or hangs on the target will still mark based on the mark that marks on the face of the target. The arrows that attack in another's nock must mark the same arrow in which they are embedded. Athletes may be disqualified, have points deducted or be prohibited from competition for various violations of the rules, depending on the seriousness of the offense. If the equipment is damaged, an appeal may be made to the judge for such equipment to be replaced or fixed, and any time allowances will be at the judge’s discretion. Rules & Regulations Page 19

SCORING IN ARCHERY <- TARGET The target has 2 rings per color except the gold/yellow which has 3 colors. The outermost ring which is white is 1 and 2 points and so on and so forth until the center circle which is equal to 10 points. Add up the number of points based on where your arrows hit the target.
