Abraham V M, Vice Chancellor of the University was addressing the gathering during the Inaugural Ceremony. He reminded everyone present in the audience that it was a day of celebration and after the festival break, it was the right time to celebrate diversity. Col Dr Fr Abraham V M also elaborated a real life example from Shashi Tharoor’s session last month, where a\\student from the Delhi NCR Campus had elucidated the feeling of indigeneity and diversity across Christ Campuses. Additionally, he mentioned how even if the members in the gathering came from different cultures, and spoke different languages, there was a sense of unity in diversity. He also emphasised on the vision of the University celebrating diversity. “We as a University are celebrating the differences. The Campus in itself is a mini-India”, he added. He was also quick to grab onto the excitement and the charm among the students at the Auditorium and wished everyone a fun-filled day ahead. His speech was followed by the Dr. John Joseph Kennedy, Dean, School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Dr. Sebastian K A, Head, Department of Languages, beating the drum to officially headstart the itinerary for the day. The Ethnic Day festivities initiated by lighting the diya, and speeches by the dignitaries Dr. John Joseph Kennedy, Dean of the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences gave an inaugural speech at ‘Bhasha Utsav 2022’ in which he emphasised that it is the diversity that brings us together and not unity. While addressing the audience he mentioned that Bhasha Utsav has been the most important festival for the university for various reasons. He said, “This is one of the festivals that unites the entire institution and not every festival has this advantage of celebrating diversity.” He engaged the audience and posed a question for them to ponder- “Why and what do we celebrate? What is diverse?” He further said that the University’s celebration of diverse cultures and the inclusion of people from different parts of the world is the beauty of the Utsav. He further encouraged all the students to celebrate this diversity every year and mentioned the various advantages associated with it including the acquisition of knowledge about other cultures and the broadening of perspectives. He ended his inaugural speech by reminding everyone about the real essence of Bhasha Utsav, which is “CELEBRATING DIVERSITY”, and also hoped that everybody in the institution would continue to celebrate and promote diversity around them.

A MEMORY OF HOME, AWAY FROM HOME It is time for the much-awaited Bhasha Utsav 2022 where Christ University celebrates various cultures in all their diversity and uniqueness. During the festivities we had the opportunity to meet Mansour and Nassour who hail all the way from Chad in Central Africa. Their cheerful smile exhibit the pride they feel as they represent their culture in the university. \"I am delighted to be part of an organisation that respects each and every culture,\" says Nassour as he happily shows off his beautiful White Kadamoul (White Turban) along with his Orange Kaptani adorned with tchadienne (Broderie designs). Mansour tells us about the necessity of his culture being represented as it is shared only by seven people within the university. He is happy that this ancient African culture, with its richness and elegance, gets a chance to be represented among the many cultures present at Christ. With smiles on their faces as they bid us adieu, they leave us with the message of having love and respect for each and every culture. BHASHA UTSAV 2022 INTERNATIONAL FACULTY BHASHA UTSAV- BREAKING BOUNDARIES OF NATIONALITIES Photo:Kushagra The beautiful campus of Christ University was beaming with enthusiasm as Christites celebrated its flagship event 'Bhasha Post Graduation Media students with Dr Guydeuk Yeon Utsav 2022'. It was mesmerizing to watch everyone dressed in vibrant colors representing their cultures. From the elegant six feet sarees of Kerala to the Kurtas and Patialas of Northern India to the Panche and Shalya of Karnataka, the campus was flooded with expressions of different cultures. For a day, Christ campus turned into a full-fledged model of Indian culture, diverse yet united. However, it would be an understatement to say that only Indian culture was represented at the event. Instead, people from all backgrounds, irrespective of their nationalities, came together to celebrate it. Bhasha Utsav not only served as a platform for people from different parts of the globe to learn about Indian culture but also portray their own culture elaborately. Our team got the honor to interact with Dr Guydeuk Yeon, who serves as the Director of the Innovation Centre at Central Campus Christ University. Dr Yeon hails from South Korea but has spent more than 29 years of his life in India. He opined that Christ has been treating him pretty well and it is almost like a dream come true for him. “Bhasha Utsav has grown like anything from a departmental celebration to an institutional one. I hope to see it as an international event soon. In Korea one may see very few variations, but in India it is on another level. The language, food, and culture make it beautiful.”, said Dr Yeon, who was traditionally dressed in a Hanbok. The enthusiasm of Dr Yeon was also shared by Dr Robert Linton Tavis Ashton Bell who serves as the Head, Department of Music. He has been lecturing for 23 years and emphasized the fact that how culture is pivotal in music and Bhasha Utsav promotes it. \"It just keeps getting more and more overwhelming every year in a great way. This event is a great platform for the presentation of Indian culture to the whole world and also how beautifully India accepts all cultures. It shows the heart of India\", added Dr Bell. -Kushagra

CULTURAL GIFT FROM TIBET In the Tibetan language, dance drums in their veins and flames in their hearts. True to those words, the Tibet folk performance of the ‘Guozhuo’ dance form with a song hailed from the land of Assam on love and peace left the audience awestruck. Usually, it is performed at folk festivals. The team consisted of 14 members, with an equal number of males and females. Furthermore, the dance involves repeated musical dialogues between male and female dancers in an antiphonal style. For Tenzin, it was about carrying the legacy of their seniors, depicting their ethnic culture and producing the piece on stage that mattered the most. While the team faced difficulty procuring their vibrant costumes and less preparation time, it didn’t stop their zeal and passion. Deuda Naach is performed in a slanted manner holding hands in a circle. But it was Dhan Naach which instilled hope and positivity in the crowd. The Mudras of Madras Tamil Nadu to a Christite is not just a State entity but a feeling as portrayed beautifully by the Natyarparna team. “Vandharai Vazhavaikum Tamil Nadu”- Tamil Nadu welcomes all and helps everyone who comes here, to build a beautiful life. The Bharatanatyam performance by the students depicted the birth of goddess Meenakshi and her life story. On questioning what place the dance form holds in their lives, many of them mentioned that Bharatanatyam is their ‘Happy Place’. The tales of Tamil Nadu took a competitive turn with the onset of the next dance performance by the State’s cultural Dance Team. They showcased a cultural blend of Parai, Thappattam and Oyilattam in true spirit. The dancers were exhilarated that they could pay an ode to the Hindu goddess, Amman, through Tamil Nadu Thiruvizha. The stars of satisfaction were twinkling in their eyes as they finally made it through the journey of months of rigorous practice, the backstage tension, all leading to that 5 minute portrayal of commendable grace and cultural glamour. What made them shine even brighter was the opportunity to be able to represent their State in its true essence. Article by Aarshi Sharma & Akshita Rajput
