SYDNEY SOUTH SHAPLA SHALUK LIONS CLUB District 201N5, Sydney, Australia Multi Faith Iftar

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS OF LIONS CLUBS The Lions Club of Sydney South Shapla Shaluk District 201N5 Australia Introduction to ”Sydney South Shapla Shaluk Lions Club” Shapla Shaluk Lions Club is the first ever Bangladeshi Lions Club in Australia. It was formed with the inspiration of our past international President, Lion Barry Palmer AO, & the Ex-Lion Governor of Bangladesh, Lion Nazmul Haque. The pioneer & founder of this Club is Dr Moinul Islam. Shapla means white water-lily. It is the national flower & national emblem of Bangladesh. Shaluk means blue water-lily. The words ”Shapla” & ”Shaluk” are often used as rhymes in Bengali. So in simple words, this Lions Club is named after the national flower of Bangladesh (Shapla). Sydney South Shapla Shaluk Lions Club is a member of the global Lions family. Our intention is to do good for humanity, particularly for the needy Bangladeshi people here in Australia & in Bangladesh. It is a completely non- profit, charitable organization. We are regulated by Lions Club International (LCI) rules & regulations (www.lionsclubs.org), as well as by the local Lions district - 201N5 (Australia). Of course, we are also bound by the local (Australian) law-enforcing authorities, including local taxation rules & the Department of Fair Trading. We are an authorised fund raiser as permitted by the Department of Fair Trading & we are insured by Lions Club International (LCI). We are not based in any political, religious, nor ethnic goal - we are a neutral social charity organization. We started our journey by conducting the “Tasmin Bahar Funeral & Repatriation Project”. Late sister Tasnim Bahar faced a tragic death from family violence. Her 74-year-old mother in Bangladesh made an appeal to see the face of her daughter for the very last time. Shapla Shaluk Lions Club made this a reality. After collecting funds, we paid for all religious rituals held in Sydney & we repatriated her body to Bangladesh for her elderly mother. Since then, we have continued to work for the community. Our Lion projects have included similar repatriations, but we have also helped destitute people with the costs and resources of medical treatment and other basic needs like food, housing, and winter clothing. Additionally, we have organized many social events in Australia aiming to promote unity and multiculturalism. This includes hosting reception events for high profile Bangladeshi Leaders (Army Doctors, BD Police Officers, secretariat high officials, esteemed BD university teachers etc.) and hosting Multifaith Iftar dinners with many ethnic, religious, community and political leaders in attendance. We have also attended community events (Bangladeshi Language Day, ANZAC Day, etc.), as well as some events organized by Parramatta Police. In the future, we hope to spearhead many more community-based projects, including “Free First Aid courses (CPR program) for the non-medical local community,” various seminars on different topics (road safety, taxation, SHAPLA SHALUK LIONS CLUB 3

value of family in our life, etc.) & more. These are smaller projects, but we have bigger aspirations for the future. One such aim is to establish a culturally appropriate nursing home for Bangladeshi elderlies in Australia. Here, it is important to mention that we always aim to be honest and upfront with how we use our funds. All administrative costs of the Club are run with our pocket money & Lion member fees. We use this platform to appeal to the wider community and raise money for each individual cause. All funds raised for a particular project is spent for that particular project; once completed, the account balance for a given project goes to zero, there are no carry-over funds. We say this to emphasise that we are only able to do charity work with your support; Your generosity and charity helps us take on these causes and more. With the help of the public and the backbone of the International Lions community, we believe we can achieve our goals. We give many thanks to the Bangladeshi Australian community, who have helped to fund the majority of our projects, and to everyone else who have offered their ongoing support. We feel proud to be Bangladeshi We feel proud to be Australian We feel proud to be Bangladeshi Australians Finally - we feel proud to be Lions. Please help us to make a change in the lives of the people of our community. Our slogan is – “TOGETHER WE SERVE”. Thank you for reading, Dr Moinul Islam President of Shapla Shaluk Lions Club District 201N5, Australia 4 SHAPLA SHALUK LIONS CLUB

Barry J Palmer AO AUSTRALIA Past International President 2013-14, P.O. Box 24, Maitland North, New South Wales. 2320 Cell: 61-(0)-418 243 722 Email: [email protected] MEMBERS AND GUESTS OF SYDNEY SOUTH SHAYLA SHALUK LIONS CLUB Welcome to your Multi Faith Iftar, Lions dinner and Fundraising event. I am sorry that I can’t be with you on this important occasion. I well remember the initial discussions I had with PDG Nazmul Haque when I visited Bangladesh. We were both very excited about the prospect of this club coming to life in Sydney. You have exceeded our expectations. The service work and fundraising to support needed people, both in Australia and Bangladesh is truly amazing. Your leadership under the guidance of Dr Moinul Islam has shown us all the true meaning of our motto “We Serve”. Many projects have been completed like the funeral and repatriation program. You have supported hunger projects in Bangladesh, as well as winter clothing for the poor, and you continue this work today. I look forward to you achieving your dream of establishing the Bangladesh nursing home for the elderly. What a truly signature project that would be. Your initial intention was to do good in the community. You are achieving that both in Australia and Bangladesh. I wish you well on your fundraising event today. As I said before, I am sorry I can’t be with you. You see, I have a party today also, as it is my 80th Birthday today. I am sure your party will be successful as well, Best wishes. Ramadan Mubarak to our Muslim brothers and sisters Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria (CCC) are a proud supporter of the Sydney South Shapla Lions Club and have been working together with the Muslim community for eight years to continue our mission of providing respectful burial services for all faith and cultural groups in the community. CCC has created strong and active alliances with many cultural groups in Sydney, including the Bangladeshi community. We will continue to cater for all faith groups equally, with two DA approved greenfield memorial parks planned for Macarthur and Nepean. Kind regards, Peter O’Meara Chief Executive Officer at Catholic Cemeteries & Crematoria 8 SHAPLA SHALUK LIONS CLUB

My best wishes to Muslim communities across NSW as we celebrate the Holy month of Ramadan. Ramadan is time for sacrifice, prayer and self-reflection. A time to acknowledge there are many people who are doing it tough and together, we can provide support for those in need. A time to get together with family and friends to share a meal and engage in conversation. On behalf of the NSW Government, I commend all the Muslim communities for your exceptional work throughout the pandemic. Muslim communities have come together to support those less fortunate by providing advice, food, care packages and support. I commend Shapla Shaluk Lions Club efforts to raise money for those in need both here in Australia and overseas. The Club members and supporters should be proud of the work you do and I want to acknowledge the pioneer and founder of the Club, Dr Moinul Islam. I wish you a blessed Ramadan. May this Eid be filled with pleasure, happiness, wealth, and the affection of your loved ones. Ramadan Mubarak everyone. The Hon. Dr. Geoff Lee MP Member for Parramatta Minister for Corrections April 2022 SHAPLA SHALUK LIONS CLUB 9

Multifaith vitality Multiculturalism is something so very rich and vital within our society; sometimes we don’t even notice how engraved it is within us. The idea of embracing multiculturalism is something many of us are yet to grasp. But we as a welcoming community can do our utmost best to accept every different nationality, faith or ethnicity without question. Without multiculturalism, we would not be how we are right now; the distinct sects between us are what unites us as human beings at the end of the day. Accepting the fact that people can look different, talk differently, think differently and believe differently will aid our community in its journey of becoming utopian. After all, the differences between us are what makes us human; it is what separates us from being dreary clones of one another. But unfortunately, diversity comes with its many issues, as what we are facing in the world to this very day. But it is not diversity, in particular, causing these wars and conflicts, rather us humans and our inability to understand that we are all different and it is entirely okay to be so. We simply must consider the wonders cultural diversity has gifted us with, ensuring that our world is not utterly mundane. Cultural diversity not only promotes peace but it also makes our society livelier to live in. Different cultures have their own set of beliefs and interests, which they can exchange to provide a fresh new perspective to society. People from various cultures can provide us with unique takes on food, language, music, literature, religion, and many other topics. Diversity is something so delightful and unique, something we must hold close to our hearts if we want our world to prosper. And so, I ask you, take a moment out of your day to remember the beauties of multi-culture and multi-faith, shed any negative opinions you may have on either of them, we are just too blessed to be throwing away our privileges due to our simple differences.
