OUR MISSION Xavier College Preparatory is a Roman Catholic high school that actively seeks, educates, and nurtures young men and women from a wide variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, and religious backgrounds in the Coachella Valley. In the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, Jesuit education is committed to the development of the whole person through a challenging educational experience, spiritual and religious formation, and co-curricular involvement. Supporting the role of parents as primary educators, our entire school program is dedicated to developing conscientious leaders and agents of change who are intellectually competent, open to growth, committed to justice, religious, and compassionate in service to others for the greater glory of God. DEDICATION, PASSION, & VISION Aron Lyons is a Palm Springs native and has served the Xavier Community since 2007, one of Xavier’s longest tenured faculty members. After graduating From Brophy Prep in 1995, Aron received his undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University in 2000. Aron has created a legacy of being involved in the academic, spiritual and athletic development of youth. He has taught Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre Calculus and Statistics - including honors and AP versions when applicable. As the head coach of the Cross Country and Track & Field teams, his Cross Country teams have qualified to the state championships every year since 2008, having won CIF Southern Section in 2011 (Girls, Div. 5) and 2013 (Boys, Div. 4). Aron is a deft knitter who enjoys the occasional hoodwink while spending his free time with his wife and daughters. What drew you to Xavier, and what has kept you engaged for your tenure here? The promise and execution of growth. Jesuits teach about tension, so I think anytime you have change, positive or negative, there’s an opportunity for growth. The development of our community in particular is exciting, because that force is starting to put pressure in places where we‘ve never experienced it before. What changes over your tenure have intrigued you? One interesting change is the Coachella Valley’s perception of Xavier. We’ve gone from “The Little Engine that Could” to, now, big expectations. We‘ve also done a great job of reaching out to marginalized sections of the community - to get our brand and ideologies out there to kids who wouldn’t have expected a place on our campus. What is the secret to success regarding your athletics teams’ prowess? I think there’s a rogue element to Track and Cross Country that I connect with. My goal early on was to find kids that weren’t attached to the typical sports, because I knew that - especially in running - it isn’t just athleticism that coaches look for, but a certain mindset of commitment and dedication that I can tap into... and those kids who were-and-are the epitome of Jesuit-minded students. ARON LYONS MATHEMATICS & CROSS COUNTRY/ TRACK & FIELD HEAD COACH “MY FOCUS HAS NEVER BEEN ON THE RESULT. MY FOCUS IS ON PROCESS. GETTING THE KIDS TO COMMIT TO THAT - ANY WORK PERIOD - AT A SINGULAR MOMENT...IS A KEY TO SUCCESS. RATHER THAN PUSH TO BE ‘X” IN FOUR YEARS, OR TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP, I JUST WANT THEM TO BE THEIR BEST THAT DAY - AND BUILD ON THAT.”

XAVIER EUROPEAN INCURSION TRIP A group of Xavier students stepped out of the classroom and experienced history firsthand during a trip to the birthplace of Western Civilization. The school’s European Incursion took them to England and France, where they explored illustrious museums, palaces and remnants of the Old World. Xavier incursions challenge our students to experience a journey that defines their interpretations of the world around them, and to explore the inner journey that shapes what they learn and how it can change their perspectives. “THIS TRIP TO FRANCE AND ENGLAND WAS VERY EDUCATIONAL AND WAS A GOOD WAY TO LEARN AND GROW MY SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY. THE SIGHTS AND MUSEUMS WERE AMAZING BUT I FEEL BEING AWAY FROM FAMILY AND HAVING TO TAKE CARE OF MYSELF WAS A GREAT LIFE LESSON TO LEARN WHILE IN EUROPE.\" GARRETT ANTIS [2020] ALUMNI PROFILE: TOLA OMILANA Raised in Palm Desert, Tola Omilana is a first generation Nigerian-American and a proud Xavier alumnus. He went on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Video Production from Harvard University in 2016. Currently, Tola works in the Coachella Valley as a clinical field specialist for Medtronic - a medical device company based in Minneapolis, MN. Specifically, he works with physicians to implant cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators and then helps to monitor these patients for any device or heart complications. In his free time, he volunteers with his local church, discusses new music/films with friends and annoys his sister who will be graduating from Xavier next year. What was your best memory from Xavier? I would have to say that freshman retreat was a true highlight. As a student who was initially opposed to attending Xavier, it marked the turn of a skeptical attitude and convinced me to buy into what the school had to offer. Its annual re-occurrence also presented opportunities to relive the retreat through different roles - as a sophomore gofer and a retreat leader. How has Xavier changed since you graduated? It’s great to see how much Xavier has made a name for itself in the Coachella Valley. As a student, it often felt like our school was a young wolf trying to prove its mettle in the pack. So it’s cool to see our clubs and athletic teams holding their own and leading the pack. “I’M GR ATEFUL FOR THE HOLISTIC JESUIT EDUCATION XAVIER PROVIDED, SPECIFICALLY VALUES THAT PRIORITIZED SERVING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES. IN TIME, I FOUND INCREDIBLY FULFILLING WAYS TO CONTRIBUTE AS A MENTOR AND LEADER AT HARVARD. IN MY FINAL YEARS, I WAS ABLE TO SERVE ORGANIZATIONS THAT CULTIVATED FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES FOR HARVARD UNDERGRADUATES AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM THE GREATER BOSTON AREA.” TOLA OMILANA [2012] | HARVARD UNI. [2016]

SUMMIT WEEK 2018 Xavier Summits on Human Dignity invite the Xavier community to examine faith and the promotion of justice. Students, faculty and parents experience, reflect and respond to a complicated world. Our summit week is an opportunity to do school differently; as we engage in human, sustained and deep discussions of ideas and tensions that impact our lives and animate our ways of proceeding. 2018 focused on Technology and Social Media, as speakers and presentations highlighted protecting ourselves in the digital age and the impact of “screen time” on our children. \"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I LEARNED FROM THE SUMMIT WAS ABOUT BEING MYSELF. THE KEYNOTES HELPED ME BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT MY FUTURE IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE.” JAIRY CAZARES [2021] DELORES MISSION EAST LA IMMERSION The Dolores Mission Immersion Program provides an opportunity for Xavier students to experience a diverse, vibrant, inner-city Catholic community as it confronts the major social crises of the day. By fostering direct relationships with people affected by the realities and issues related to immigration, gang violence, poverty, criminal & juvenile justice, education, and racism, Dolores Mission provides a unique context for social analysis, spiritual reflection, and personal growth. \"I HAD A VERY GOOD EAST L.A. EXPERIENCE IN DECEMBER. MY FAVORITE PART WAS PLAYING GAMES AND TUTORING THE KIDS. YOU COULD SEE THEIR PURE JOY BY JUST PLAYING GAMES AND HAVING FUN WITH THEM, AND TAKING TIME OUT OF OUR DAY TO HELP THEM WITH THEIR WORK.\" MCKINLEE GROAT [2019] KAIROS: “GOD’S TIME” Kairos, translated to “God’s Time” is a multi-day retreat with a purpose of helping Xavier students and faculty contemplate their relationship with God, discover their own identity and build stronger bonds with their peers. Kairos retreats date back to the 1960s and have their roots in the 16th century spiritual excercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. “THE KAIROS RETREAT OPENED MY EYES TO THE WONDERS OF GOD'S BEAUTIFUL, LOVING CREATION AND HOW WE EACH HOLD SO MANY UNIQUE QUALITIES TO BRING TO THE WORLD.” JULIA WAY [2018]
