Xavier College Preparatory High School Annual Report

Dear Companions, Ten years into its history, one of Xavier’s primary objectives remains to keep the doors Chris Alling open. If we’ve learned anything from opening the school with 48 students, it is that Xavier President “hope is not a strategy.” It has taken a lot of hard work to go from rented classroom space to the growing facility and school community we are today! While Xavier remains long on hope, and while we’ve survived these ten years, we are keenly aware that our thriving in the future will take an increasingly intentional and strategic effort. With that in mind, we continue to refurbish and improve aspects of our facility, while imagining new projects and programs. A fundamental part of our way of proceeding is a desire to avoid the inevitable and to seek the innovative in the field of education and specifically in our place in Jesuit secondary education. Our very existence as a “traditional” Jesuit high school in the United States without Jesuits is a testament to our innovative approach. We feel that to succumb to the inevitability that plagues so much of American education these days would be a disservice to our Jesuit identity and roots. Therefore, Xavier’s growth has been characterized by fluidity, flexibility, and collaboration among numerous partners. We aim to have the best faculty and staff, to provide access to the opportunities at Xavier for any student regardless of his or her ability to afford the full cost of tuition, to continue to be excellent stewards of our debts and resources, and to grow Xavier’s facilities and programs in sustainable and creative ways. We can only reach these goals with your continued generous support. It is a blessing and a privilege to partner with you! Peace, Chris Alling President

Literally.” In addition to providing consulting services and structural improvements, the Kincaids have been generous supporters of many Xavier programs. They have given much needed assistance to the cheerleading, volleyball and dance programs. Additionally, Kaci served as co-chair of Xavier’s annual Pasta Dinner, one of the school’s most successful and beloved events. The Kincaids were drawn to Xavier because of its similarities to Sacred Heart Catholic School in Palm Desert. Xavier, said Scott, was appealing as “an extension of the education we desired for our children starting at Sacred Heart.” The Kincaids have four daughters: Kortney ’18, Kaytlyn ’15, Karissa, and Kylie. Xavier was not yet open when Karissa and Kylie were in high school. They graduated from Palm Desert High School. When asked what Xavier has meant for her children, Kaci said, “I think Xavier has made them well rounded and ready to be adults.” Xavier College Prep | Annual Report 4

He has now settled down in Los Angeles, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mike where he is working at Caruso Affiliated. Mr. and Mrs. J. Peter Ministrelli What do you remember about your time in high school? I just remember being so excited for what was ahead. You never Mr. Harry Nudd know what’s coming around the corner. You can be excited be- +Mr. and Mrs. Tod Parrott cause you don’t know what’s going to happen, or you can be scared Mr. and Mrs. L. Robert Pasquesi because you don’t know what’s going to happen. I remember being excited. Looking back at it, I just remember being so excited and be- Mr. and Mrs. Jack Perry ing ready to dive in to what God had planned for me. +Mrs. Leona J. Preece Why did you decide to come to Xavier, especially when it was such a Mr. and Mrs. John C. Radovich new school at the time? Mr. and Mrs. Halvor Rover I was looking for a school that was academically going to impress Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shea me, but also a football program that was playing 11-man football and a coach that I meshed well with. And Xavier definitely had that with +Mr. James Shea Coach Lewis and the administrators. Ms. Barbara Steffens What was your experience like playing football at Xavier? Mr. and Mrs. Timothy M. Sullivan Great. Definitely tough. Coach Lewis pushed me, but he was pushing me because he knew I could keep playing and emerge as a leader on Mr. Hank Thierry the team. His coaching style was exactly what I needed at that time Mr. Henry Trione and I am very appreciative of that. Ms. Molly A. Walters What was it like to receive the phone call from Lane Kiffin (then +Mrs. Mary Zwach head coach of USC), inviting you to join the USC football team? Andrew Allen Charitable Foundation It was pretty amazing. I didn’t want to say anything until I was Conrad N. Hilton Foundation signed 100 percent. When it was finally all said and done, I couldn’t Highland Street Foundation have been happier and feeling more blessed. Roel Construction Co. How was your experience at Southern Cal? Sacred Heart Church Fantastic. The platform is so special. You really have an opportunity The California Province of the Society of Jesus to share what your passion is about, and people will listen. And that The H. N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation was one of the coolest parts. People sit and listen to you and they Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians want to hear from a USC quarterback and student athlete. Weingart Foundation What’s a favorite memory from your time at USC? My last game at the Coliseum versus Notre Dame. Playing versus + Deceased Notre Dame and moving the ball down the field and having the fans react the way they did. How do you reflect upon your tryout with the Washington Redskins? My name was on an NFL roster. It was my lifelong dream and it happened. What did Xavier teach you? Xavier was one of the first places I realized I can do what it is I want to do. I can be utilized as a leader in my community, in my school, and in the world. My trip to El Salvador was pretty important to me to have something in mind and then have people believe in me and help us together as a group accomplish something. That’s something Xavier gave me a taste of and continued to develop at USC. 7 Xavier College Prep | Annual Report

Xavier Loyola Society Xavier College Preparatory High School has always been a partnership between parents, staff and faculty, and the Loyola Society continues that tradition. Motivated by a spirit of service, working in collaboration with the Xavier College Preparatory Advancement Office, the Loyola Society consists of parents, benefactors and other Xavier supporters who wish to help the school accomplish its goals. The Society seeks to foster community among its members and provide opportunities for networking and fellowship. The Loyola Society is named after St. Ignatius of Loyola (b. 1491), founder of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). It came about after a few alumni parents approached the school about creating a more formal opportunity to stay connected with campus. Consistent with the legacy of St. Ignatius, Society members possess a passion for education and have agreed to take on a more consistent and direct effort to address Xavier’s needs. Membership in the Loyola Society is $1,000 annually for individuals, and $1,500 for spouses who join together. As part of their membership, Society members receive regular updates on school happenings and plans for growth, as well as tickets to select Xavier fundraising and community events. Society members also meet five times a year for lunch on Xavier’s campus, where they hear from student, faculty, and other guest speakers, as well as news from the advancement office. If you’re interested in joining the Loyola Society, please contact Matt Emerson, Xavier’s Director of Advancement, at [email protected] or at (760) 601-3900, ext. 6087. XAVIER FUND GIFTS 2014/2015 St. Francis Xavier Guild P. Kelly Carmien $25,001-$50,000 Xavier’s success has resulted from many Mr. and Mrs. Nachhattar Chandi serendipitous moments, but few have been Mr. and Mrs. Scott Dalecio as important for the school as the day in Mr. Henry J. Thierry 2006 that Mrs. Phyllis Kelly Carmien read Holmes Family Foundation about Xavier in the Desert Sun. Knee Family Foundation Xavier was just about to break ground, and the newspaper Messina Society article summarized the dedication and hard work of the parents $50,001-$100,000 who brought Xavier from dream to reality. Inspired by what she read, Mrs. Carmien, a resident of Palm Desert, contacted DoeDee Anonymous Rover, one of Xavier’s founders and President Emerita, to discuss Mrs. Joy Svenson (Deceased) the ways that Mrs. Carmien might support the school. “I thought they needed a Catholic school here,” she said. “I was Current Saints & Alumni Circle really in favor of it.” Since first learning about the school, Mrs. Carmien has been Ms. Sarika Andavolu ‘13 extraordinarily generous. Her charitable heart has enabled the Mr. Derick Barajas ‘13 school to fund the position of campus chaplain (currently held by Miss Jillian A. Barbato ‘18 Fr. Jack McGinness), a new website (which went live in the late Mr. Chandler A. Barbato ‘18 Spring of 2014), and additional improvements around campus. Ms. Sarah A. Beardsley ‘13 “It’s just remarkable what Xavier has done the few years that I’ve Ms. Isabella R. Bianco ‘13 been involved,” Mrs. Carmien said. “When you see progress like Ms. Hannah M. Boiko ‘14 that, you want to continue with it.” Mr. Connor D. Lennon ‘11 Though Mrs. Carmien didn’t attend Catholic school herself, Ms. Camille G. Lethcoe ‘13 Catholicism and Catholic education have been a big part of her Mr. Taylor S. Matthews ‘13 life. One of her cousins was a priest, and for over 50 years her Ms. Stephanie M. Rhoten ‘12 brother was a monk in the Order of St. Benedict. + Deceased Mrs. Carmien came to California when she was nineteen, eventually marrying and settling in Beverly Hills. Her husband, Gifts In Kind a USC graduate, was a manufacturer of hand tools. She and her husband moved to the Coachella Valley in 1986. Xavier’s continued growth and Xavier remains abundantly grateful for the generosity of Mrs. development is supported by gifts Carmien and the role she has played in Xavier’s growth. of all kinds. We welcome gifts from businesses and members of our community, to ensure that academic, athletic and co-curricular activities have the resources they need. Your generous gift helps make that possible. Again thank you for your generous donation. Xavier College Prep | Annual Report 9

JMagis: The Opportunity to do MORE esuits use the Latin word magis, or “more,” to inspire in others and themselves a boundless desire to reach ever-higher levels of excellence. At Xavier College Prep, we ask our students to make the most of their talents, to put forth their best effort and to do more than they think is possible. We will expect no less from our graduates and our Xavier community. Academic excellence is not enough: we are here to form “men and women with and for others,” for the common good. We are dedicated to nurturing graduates who will serve those most in need of their talents. After all, it was St. Ignatius of Loyola’s idea that the objective of a Jesuit education is to prepare people to serve others for the greater glory of God, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, by constantly adapting our educational goals and methods to contemporary life.
