LOCAL ATTRACTIONS ELIZABETHTOWN The hamlet of Elizabethtown, the original “Pleasant Valley,” is a historical jurisdiction located at the heart of the 6-million acre Adirondack Park, the largest forest preserve in the continental United States. It is situated on the Boquet River, at the base of Hurricane and Giant Mountains. Spectacular mountain views, stunning scenery, and a quintessential old-fashioned charm welcomes visitors. Elizabethtown is home to one of the oldest golf courses in America, namely, Cobble Hill Golf Course. Located at the juncture of Route 9N and Route 9, this course, created in 1896, offers nine challenging holes ringed with majestic pines and Adirondack Mountain views. The Boquet River is a staple destination of Elizabethtown, frequented by avid fisherman and outdoorsmen. Characterized by copious easily accessible fishing sites along the river, the Boquet River offers trout fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The Adirondack History Museum and Colonial Garden are located in beautiful Elizabethtown. Located on Court Street, the museum is an impressive triplex featuring historical, so- cial and military exhibits focusing on the Adirondack region. The Colonial Garden is a display of formal beds of annuals and perennials, located at the rear of the Adirondack History Museum, adjacent to Hand Avenue. NEARBY LAKES LAKE CHAMPLAIN & LAKE PLACID Located just 12 miles from the Halfway House Motel and Restaurant lies Lake Champlain, the eighth largest naturally occurring body of fresh water in the continental United States. At roughly 120 miles in length and 12 miles at its widest point, Lake Champlain boasts over 587 miles of shoreline. The impressive lake occupies three states, New York, Vermont and Quebec, and thus two countries, the United States and Canada. Lake Champlain is special in many ways. It is a paradise for boaters, beach-goers, fishermen, bikers, hikers, hunt- ers, skiing enthusiasts and history lovers. It is legendary for it’s bass fishing, ranking 5th in the United States by Bassmaster. While bass fishing wins Lake Champlain it’s notoriety, many fisherman frequent the lake for it’s trout and landlocked salmon as well. As the lake was once a major throughway for iron ore and lumber ex- ports, and an integral part of the Revolutionary War, it is also known for it’s rich collection of lighthouses, some of which welcome visitors as part of the Adirondack Architectural Heritage sponsored tour, “Lighthouses of Lake Champlain.” In addition to Lake Champlain’s nearly 500 square miles of water, the Champlain Area Trails System includes more than 40 miles of hiking trails with stunning views. An adequate review of Lake Cham- plain tourist attractions would be incomplete without mentioning the American folklore legend, “Champ.” This alleged lake monster has over 300 sightings on record. “Champ” plays a cultural role throughout the region as well. An annual festival such as “Champ Day” in Port Henry, New York, is one of many. In addition, Minor League Baseball Teams and College Leagues use “Champ” as their mascot. Moreover, small businesses in the region even utilize “Champ” as part of their company logo.

LAKE PLACID The Lake Placid Region gained notoriety as the host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. It has since be- come a global travel destination that honors it’s Olympic heritage. NEARBY CITIES WESTPORT & PLATTSBURGH Plattsburgh is the largest municipality in northern New York State, sitting on the western shore of Lake Champlain, 25 miles south of the Canadian border. The home of SUNY Plattsburgh, the juris- diction is a festive college town in close proximity to Montreal, Burlington and Lake Placid. The city features a culturally-rich downtown, where unique shops, trendy restaurants, and nightlife options in- tersect with historical tributes. Strand Center for the Arts which offers gallery exhibits, art classes, and performances is located downtown, as is historic City Hall which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designed by famed archi- tect John Russell Pope. The museums, monuments and historic houses are a constant reminder of the significance of the region in U.S. history. A battle- ground through three wars, Plattsburgh offers glim- mers into the nation’s past. The former Plattsburgh Air Force Base, which closed in 1994 and dates back to the early 1800s, is the longest active mili- tary installation in the country. Plattsburgh’s recre- ational trails, beaches and parks all lead to Lake Champlain. Water sports and activities, including sailing, fishing, windsurfing, scuba diving, boating, paddling, ice skating and snowshoeing are pastime options here. Plattsburgh boasts one of the longest fresh water beaches in the country.

For those seeking performances and art exhibi- tions, the Depot Theatre is a coveted attraction with a fascinating history. Situated between the shores of Lake Champlain and the High Peaks of the Ad- irondacks, the Depot Theatre originated out of a community-wide effort in 1978 to save the historic Westport train station and in 1988 became a profes- sional theatre company operating under an agree- ment with the actors and stage managers union, the Actors Equity Association. In addition to the Depot Theatre, the city of Westport offers live concerts in Ballard Park’s open air pavilion.

WESTPORT Many art studios line the city streets as well. The boating scene is Westport is one of splendor. The city offers a full service marina and New York state boat launch. There are also many waterfront restau- rants with available boat docking which boaters can dine at, including venues such as the Westport Yacht Club. In addition, Westport offers cultural ex- periences such as the annual summer Essex Coun- ty Fair and the Adirondack Harvest Festival, which attracts locals as well as visitors from afar. An array of community activities such as craft fairs, art exhibits, lectures and educational programs are also offered at the Westport Heritage House, a for- mer 1870s Gothic Church which now serves as a visitor center.
