UNIT 1 CYBER THREAT: INTERNET ADDICTION 3 Before you read. 1) How many hours do you use Internet in a day? What do you prefer doing online? 2) Is the Internet harmful or useful?

CYBER THREAT: INTERNET ADDICTION The Internet is an important part of our lives. It makes our lives easier. We can do online shopping so we can save time. We don’t need to wait in the long queues of the shopping malls. Instead of it, we can order our all needs from the Internet. Also, people can search for information from the Net or we can do our homework with the help of it. If we don’t have time, we can pay our bills online. If we are bored, we can use the Internet as a way of entertainment. We can play online games, watch movies or videos. When we feel alone, we can make new friends in chat rooms. We can share photos on our social networking sites. Before travels, we can buy 4 our tickets online and we can read books online during the travel. The Internet certainly ensures lots of opportunities for our lives. What about its disadvantages? How does it affect our lives? Most of the teenagers are Internet addicts today. According to the scientists, 12-17 years old teenagers access to the Internet more than any other age groups and they are under higher risk of overusing the Internet. They are addicted to the Internet and they spend most of their time online. The teenagers create cyber worlds for themselves on the Net and they lose their reality. They make unreal friends and they have imaginary conversations with each other. They can’t spend time with their families or friends. Although a teenager has 500 friends on the Net, she can’t find any friend around her to go to the cinema. Eventually, teenagers become asocial individual. They disconnect from the real world. Moreover, they are crazy about playing popular video games.

They have their dinner at computer desks and they only have a 5 break when they to go to the toilet. According to scientists, there are lots of teenagers in the USA who left their schools because of these video games. They prefer collecting scores in video games to having an education at school. Internet addiction is a real threat to modern life. Scientists state that Internet addiction causes depressive symptoms on teenagers. Furthermore, teenagers expose to excessive radiation and this damages their brain functions negatively. Unfortunately, Internet addicts have some physical problems. They don’t move during the day so inactivity causes gaining weight, rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath. One of the Internet addictions is social networking addiction. Users become addicted to Facebook or YouTube. They share all of their information, and they upload their personal photos. If they have enough ‘‘likes’’ for their photos, they become very satisfied. It means a form of confirmation for teenagers. The only important thing is to have a lot of friends. However, it is not important if they are real or fake. Experts state that teenagers are at the risk of losing their virtual reality. Parents and teachers should be careful about the addiction to the Internet. Parents should spend time with their children and they should contact with teenagers in the real world. Teachers should educate teenagers about the risks and disadvantages of excessive using of the Internet. A two-year-old baby’s ability of using the Internet doesn’t prove its intelligence; it only proves to have a careless parent.
