DIAMOND BOX GRAMMAR 1.1 verb tenses review: present simple, present continuous, present perfect simple A present simple tense We use present simple to talk about something that is always or usually true in the present. Those things are often our habits, routines and schedules. I have a big breakfast with my family on weekdays. She works as a personal assistant at a bank. He is a middle-aged man. It looks very nice on you. We go to dinner on Friday evenings. They play cricket every Saturday. The last bus to my home leaves at 11 pm. B present continuous tense We use present continuous to talk about the actions •happening at the time of speaking •a short-term action that happened recently •changes happening around now (often with the verbs get, become, increase, grow, etc.) e.g. I’m taking a badminton class this month. Harold is cleaning his room right now/at the moment. The population of this town is growing fast. We’re eating dinner now. They’re working as cashiers in a supermarket these days. C Present perfect simple tense We use present perfect tense to talk about experiences that • happened before now without telling their exact time • recent actions or situations • giving news using the time expressions just, already, yet • actions or situations that started in a particular time in the past and are still going on at this time. I have been to Istanbul more than ten times. She has just left the classroom. His brother has stayed with us for six weeks. We have eaten here many times. They have lived here for two years. When we want to know who/what does the action, we use the subject question form. To make a subject question, we can use who or what instead of the subject of the sentence. Object questions are more common and familiar question forms. An object question asks about the object of the sentence. We need auxiliary verbs and we have to change the word order of the question.. Note: When a question word is the object of a preposition, the preposition is usually at the end of the sentence. Practice A Make questions using the prompts below. 1.3 indirect questions and requests When we ask questions to strangers, or when we want to sound more polite, we can use indirect questions and requests. We can use the expressions like these to make indirect questions and requests. Do you know…? Can you tell me…? I was wondering… I’d like to know… Would it be possible…? In indirect questions and requests with the verb to be, have/has or modal verbs, we put the subject-verb (SV) order. Direct question Indirect question What time is it? That sounds good / bad / interesting / great. 2.1 past simple vs. past continuous We use the simple past to talk about completed actions in the past. We use the past continuous to talk about actions in progress in the past. Simple past I wrote a new song yesterday afternoon. (The action was completed yesterday afternoon.) Past continuous We were practising the new song at 3 p.m. yesterday. (The action ‘practising’ was in progress at 3 p.m. yesterday.) We often use the simple past and past continuous together. We were practising our new song when our manager arrived. (The verb ‘practising’ was in progress when the verb ‘arrive’ interrupts it.) When we use two simple past sentence together, the meaning changes. Compare When Lisa arrived, they practised the new song. (First, Lisa arrived, then they practised. One action happens after another.) When Lisa arrived, they were practising the new song. (They had already started practising before Lisa arrived.) Note: We do not use stative verbs in continuous tenses. After be used to, we can use a noun, noun phrase or gerund. I wasn’t used to driving on the left, but now I’m used to it. It was quite difficult to travel by plane for me, but now I’m used to flying all over the world. We use get used to when we are becoming accustomed to something and becoming familiar with it. After get used to, we can use a noun, noun phrase or gerund. They’ve just had a baby, so they are getting used to having little sleep. My job isn’t very fun, but I’m getting used to it. We’re getting use to our new neighbourhood. We can use both be used to and get used to with past, present and future tenses. I wasn’t used to cooking for myself, but now I like it. She’ll be used to living in the city in no time. You’ll get used to working with Jane. She’s a great manager. I got used to wearing heavy clothes when I moved to Norway. 2.3 Relative pronouns and clauses We use relative clauses to give more information about a person, thing or place. There are two kinds of relative clauses, defining and non-defining. We introduce relative clauses with the relative pronouns who(m), which, that, whose, when and where. Defining relative clauses We use defining relative clause to make clear which person, place or thing we are talking about. This helps your audience understand what happened better. Sequencing refers to the order in which the events happened. Here are some common sequencing words. 3.1 present perfect simple vs. present perfect continuous When we use the present perfect simple to talk about completed actions in the past, we focus on the action itself and do not mention the exact time. We can use the past perfect simple tense to talk about completed actions that happened before a specific time or another action in the past. They had already closed all the windows when the rainstorm started. We recognized Fiona right away because we had met in Seattle a few months ago. We can use the past perfect simple tense to talk about things that continued over a period of time before a specific time or another action in the past. For this use, we only use stative verbs. 4.1 Talking about future plans We can use several different tenses to talk about future plans. A be going to future When we talk about what we have already decided to do, we can use be going to. 6.1 Passive voice We use the passive voice when we focus on the action of a sentence, not the subject. It is not important or not known who or what performs the action. We form the passive voice with the correct form of the verb be + past participle. This house was built in 1980. (passive voice) Uncle Patrick built this house in 1980. (active voice) In the passive voice, we can use by after the main verb to say who or what caused the action. This house was built by Uncle Patrick in 1980. I’ve never been bitten by a dog.
