Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] MARCH 2019 Page 3 HLPOA INFORMATION Office phone: 765-386-7447 Office Hours March & April Monday thru Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday & Saturday 8:00 a.m. to Noon MANAGERS REPORT Approximately a month ago, this community lost Brett Crowder to a tragic accident on the lake. Brett would have never taken his RZR out on the ice if he felt there was a chance he would never come back. That is why things like this is called an accident. As being in law enforcement, I was in the area, and arrived within just a minute of this happing, and approximately 8 hours later was the last to leave. The response from all agencies that arrived to assist, in the case they were needed was nothing short of impressive. To all of those several agencies involved, especially the Conservation dive team, and our local Floyd Fire Department, we thank you! Within just minutes of the accident, social media at Heritage Lake began to blow up with mostly very concerned people, when everyone witnessed all the emergency personnel arriving at the marina parking lot. During this time, it is just human nature wondering what is happening in the community. It was so comforting to see how concerned and caring people can be, with their prayers, concerns, support and generosity that was displayed towards Brett‟s family. That kind of support is what truly makes an impressive display of great people. To all of you, the Crowder family and his friends thank you! Please do not forget how kind you were to one another during this time. Demonstrating this kindness to one another everyday can turn a tragedy into something positive. The rest of my statement is merely spoken out of respect to Brett and for anyone else in the future. Unfortunately, there is always a few on our local social media sites that continue to post negative comments, or remarks that simply have no basis of truth that are so hurtful to the families and to their friends. This message is for these individuals! Please stop and think twice about what you are posting. We are better people than this. Don‟t get me wrong, social media has a lot of great use, but not to become an arm chair quarterback, to set in front of a key pad and make comments you have no clue what you are talking about. Things such as, what could have been done, what should have been done, mistakes that were made, why our fire department made up of only volunteers, does not have rescue divers. And also comment that this accident was caused by lowering the red flags. I am begging you…Please stop with all incentive remarks that are posted by these few individuals, that is hurtful to others involved, what ever the topic may be. I plead with the administrators of these sites, please take a long look at these individuals, that if they continue, please consider removing these people from your page. If you have taken the steps to delete such negative and un-truthful comments posted, thank you for doing so. I knew Brett, but my only regret is, that I did not know him much better. Because from what I hear, he would have been a fun guy to hang around. Rest in peace Brett, and may your family and friends find some comfort! Respectfully, Ken Rozelle

Page 6 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] MARCH 2019 HLPOA 2019 ANNUAL MEETING Thank you to all who attended the 2019 Annual Meeting on Saturday, February 23, or watched it on YouTube. To view the meeting in its entirety, please search YouTube for “Heritage Lake POA” where you can view this meeting or any others since we started recording last year. Below is a very high level summary of the meeting. The Board thanked members who have served out their terms on the Board this year, or whose terms ended prematurely and unexpectedly. Charlie Beard‟s family was on hand to receive a plaque with his engraved likeness to recognize his contributions to our community before his passing in October. Elia Hunt‟s term also unfortunately ended early, but she was also thanked for her service to the Community during her Board tenure. Tom Novak and Paul Forbes‟ terms also ended but both thankfully enlisted for another term. All three were given plaques to recognize their contributions. Ken Rozelle, Debra Napier, April Land, the Marina staff, Maintenance staff, and all those who work for the POA were recognized for the work they all do to keep this community looking great and running smoothly. I hope this community recognizes that these same folks who help them at the office, work on our common properties, and work at the Marina also show up and organize a lot of our fundraisers and community events, and many are also members of communities or teams. We are blessed to have such caring advocates for this community working on our behalf. If you see them around, take a moment to thank them for what they do. Each Committee and Team gave their report to highlight the contributions their teams made to this community last year. This is an army (a very small one!!) of selfless volunteers who work very hard to help make improvements throughout our community. They donate their skills, experience, energy, and often their own money to take care of and improve our community. I really don‟t know what this place would look like without all of their contributions. They are all looking for help from the community so if you have an interest or skills that could help, please contact anyone on the Board or on the Committees and let them know you‟d like to help. No contribution is too small. The Board also thanked Harold Paetow for the work he does to create and send out the Heritage Lake Telephone Directory and the monthly Highlights issues. His work gives us all an opportunity to stay informed and help us find and communicate with each other. The Board was able to deliver, among other things, the following during the past term; (1) Recorded meetings so members could watch at their leisure, (2) A flag system to indicate when the lake is at idle or closed, (3) the founda- tion for electronic voting to improve participation and reduce costs in the future, and (4) new playground equipment for the Marina, Campground, and Lincoln Park. Jim Johnson reported that we are in very healthy financial shape and Ken and the Board have been extremely responsible with our spending to the point the Marina project will not require the use of any loans or financing. The Marina project and Covenant change will be the two main projects for the Board in 2019. Lastly, I ask us all to watch out for each other and take care of each other. We live in a beautiful place that has so much to offer, but we were all unfortunately reminded that in a moment, an accident can change everything. Take care of each other and our community. Thank you all, Chris Schafer

Page 8 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] MARCH 2019 Heritage Heartland Homemakers by Marianne Novak Heritage Heartland Homemakers were all “heart” for the February Meeting by celebrating National Heart Month and a belated Valentine‟s Day. Hostesses Ethel Stafford and Marianne Novak served lunch with lots of “sweet” hearts, heart-healthy turkey chili and cornbread muffins. Later in the meeting we matched sweethearts that only children and “ageless” Homemakers would know (think…Tarzan & Jane); used Conversation Hearts Candy to compose Valentine sayings (then we got to eat them); and finally we exchanged Valentines. For International Citizenship, Donna McGinley informed us about Indonesia…did you know that more than 17,000 individual islands make up Indonesia? Or that Indonesia is the world‟s 4th most populated country? Or that over 300 ethnic groups inhabit Indonesia? Thanks, Donna, for keeping us in the know! For the rest of the meeting, we made plans for the Spring District Meeting. HHH is hosting this event at the Putnam County Museum on March 15, 2019. If you‟d like to help out Putnam County Middle Schoolers, we are accepting donations of men‟s/ women‟s deodorant, shampoo, soap, body wash, nail clippers, and emery boards. For pick up, call Marianne Novak at 765/386- 2077. The next meeting will be on March 19 at 11:30 A.M. Donna McGinley and Bev Spires are the hostesses. Remember to bring your checkbook to pay dues. For more information about Homemakers, call either Mary Ellen Deegan at 317/846-2979 or Bev Spires at 765/246-6558. Heritage Lake Book Club by Marianne Novak For February we discussed Distant Hours by Kate Morton. Although we didn‟t enjoy this book as much as the author‟s novel, Lake House, we found the style of writing to be the same. The novel went back and forth in time with beautifully written descriptive phrases. There were plenty of red herrings, and controlling/manipulative characters. If you are looking for a gothic setting, this Aus- tralian author creates an appealing setting at Milderhurst Castle. We rated the book 2.9. Page 10 Heritage Lake HIGHLIGHTS EMAIL > [email protected] MARCH 2019 FOOD FOR THOUGHT: I AM WHO YOU SAY I AM Being the person responsible for picking music in my church, I have lots of songs that find their way into my „inbox‟. Recently, I came across a song link for „Who You Say I Am’. For me, the „Who‟ in the songs title is my Creator God but it wasn‟t always that way. Growing up with a critical father left me with low self-worth, always striving for his „conditional‟ love. I‟m blessed to have a wonderful husband who loves me more every day, despite the additional wrinkles and weight… God is good. What do you think of when you read the title of that song? For some who like me, have had a less than perfect childhood, the „Who‟ might be a domineering father. For others, it might be an abusive spouse and for others, it might be bullies at school or chat room on the internet. Then there are the labels that are so easily thrown around in the media, labels of all sort. Labels are sticky business, easily affixed but hard to remove. There‟s always a little lingering residue. For all those who have been labeled „worth-less‟ or „worthless with conditions‟, read on and rejoice! It‟s nothing new, especially in regards to women. In biblical times, women were less than second rate citizens, hardly more than housekeepers who bore children. They didn't even warrant labels, labels of any kind. During the 1st century, the testimony of women wasn't counted as credible. Josephus, the first century Jewish historian stated that a women's testimony was considered unreliable at best. \"But let not the testimony of women be admitted, on account of the levity and boldness of their sex...since it is probable that they may not speak truth, either out of hope of gain, or fear of punishment. The Talmud states that any evidence which a woman [gives] is not valid [to offer]. This is like saying that a thief is qualified to give the same evidence as a woman! I bring this up because it makes the Resurrection account, an awesome affirmation to a woman's worth in the eyes of her Creator. Think about this, if a woman‟s testimony was „trash‟, why were women attributed the role as first witnesses to Christ's Resurrection? Surely if they wanted to be taken seriously, it would have made more sense to assign men to this role. But while each gospel account describes other events differently, the one detail that remains the same, in each account, is that women were first on the scene. See the implication? Not only were women the first to witness the Resurrection, but the fact that the authors used women in the account, speaks to the Resurrection account being historically accurate and undeniably true! God used the testimony of women in the greatest historical account of all time! God loves to use the underdog, the youngest, oldest, the least, the last and the weaker of society to enact His great plan. No matter who you are or where you are in life, no matter what circumstances you might find yourself in, remember that He sees you; You are important to Him, you have value beyond measure, you are greatly loved, …unconditionally. Think you have nothing of value to be used? If God has made Himself known to you, you do have something of value to give. It just takes one godly woman to make an impact, when empowered by the Holy Spirit. When those in Christ unite, using the gifts He has given them, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished. So, rejoice.! As the song lyrics go “I am chosen, not forsaken, I am who You say I am, you are for me, not against me, I am who You say I am…In my Father’s house, there’s a place for me (you), I’m a child of God…yes I am!” Remember who you are!
