The Giant and The Dwarf Ananth Nambiar Class 7 N Once in a kingdom in Borneo, lived a giant named Argus and a dwarf named Dulir. Both were good people but the giant was respected whereas the dwarf was teased and mocked. Even though Argus was strong he was naive whereas Dulir was very clever. One night, an enemy of Argus named Geryon attacked the country. Geryon was an even stronger giant. After a tough battle, Geryon won. The kingdom was in imminent danger. Dulir thought of a plan to stop the giant. He built a large pit and covered it with leaves and twigs and a layer of dirt to cover it with the help of his trusted friends. After the trap was built, Dulir called “Hey Geryon come out and play”. Geryon became furious hearing this and rushed towards Dulir but what Geryon didn’t know was that Dulir was standing right be- hind the trap. As Geryon neared Dulir, he fell down inside the trap which was very deep. As soon as he fell down, Dulir put a bucket full of citric acid from lemons in the giant’s eyes. His eyes burnt a lot. After that Dulir said “Put a big boulder on top of him!”. Geryon was killed. The king- dom was safe. The people thanked Dulir and celebrated.

Trees Do Talk Juhaina Ajmal,Class 7M Everyone must have seen James Cameron’s famous movie Avatar. It’s about a planet called Pandora and the Na’vi people that lives there. Cameron’s Pandora have wonderful biodiversity with a variety of plants and animals colored and bril- liantly shining with bioluminescence. What I loved the most about this movie was that the plants, the animals and the Na’vi people were all connected like a unit, like a nervous system connecting all parts of our body. All depending on each other, everyone helping one another. But is all that confined to Cameron’ imagination or can we find something simi- lar here on earth too? British-Columbian Forest ecologist Suzanne Simard, through her landmark paper ‘Net transfer of Carbon between ectomycorrhizal tree species in the field’ showed us that things are no different here on earth too. She explained how trees com- municate with each other in an entire forest, just like family members communi- cating with each other, caring, sharing and even protecting each other. All living beings depend on each other for survival. All living things, the non- living counterparts and their interaction makes up the ecosystem that we see around us. We all communicate to others, express our feelings, telling what ails us, or makes us happy. But what about trees? They seem to stay still and don’t talk like we do, nor make any sound, at the first glance; but that’s not entirely true. But what make the trees communicate with each other? When young Suzanne ex- plored the forests with her grandfather, she observed the thick bed white fila- ments that covered the roots of all the trees in the forest. She later learned that this thick bed of filaments are Mycorrhiza, the kinds of fungi that intimately at- tached to the roots trading carbon with roots. These Mycorrhizae forms the back- bone of the network that connects roots to roots, trees to trees, even farther apart. The roots communicate with each other through the language of Nitrogen, Phos- phorous, Carbon, water, hormones, defense signals- and therefore, information. The Mycorrhizae enhances this connectivity and helps extending this connection to even farthest of the trees, making the forest like a single giant organism.

Moreover, there are Mother Trees or Hub Trees, which are older trees that send these nutrients, through mycorrhizal connections, to the other to the much lit- tler trees. In this way, a mother tree can be connected to hundreds of little trees, affectionately nurturing and caring the little ones to grow and survive. Simard also discovered that mother trees tend to send more carbon and nutrients to the little trees of the same species, than the other spe- cies of trees. Old trees, that are injured and won’t live for very long, send signals to the younger trees and transfer all the carbon & nutri- ents and other things it’ll no longer need. Now what we, humans, do to them is that We bury each and every inch our open soil under concrete and cement, ‘generously’ leaving a small circle or square of open soil around the trees. What we think is that, as the trees don’t move around, the little open space should be sufficient to keep them alive. What we are not aware of are the mil- lions of roots that we bury under cement. The mycorrhizae also gets destroyed due to lack of air mixing. We actually are burying the trees alive, isolating them from each other and silencing them forever. Even in a place like our Anushaktinagar, where people are supposed to be much more environment-aware, many hundreds of square me- ters of soil goes under the cement. The surroundings of my home, used to be a beautiful ecosystem of trees, flowers, insects, snakes that meant no harm. A family of bulbuls that live on a tree right in front of my balcony. Now when I look down from my balcony, I see a barren waste of cement and interlocking tiles. The little plants and flowers, with bees swarming around them, are no more. The big Ixora plant, with its brilliant red flower bunches, which used to be the hub of but- terflies, is all gone. What have we done? What are we doing? At what cost will we stop this selfishness to earn our little comforts? The climate is changing, plants and animals are disappearing every day, forever from the face of earth. We are on the verge of six mass extinction.

Shantanu Choudankar 2 N The Pot of wisdom Once upon a time, king Akbar got so mad at Birbal that he told Birbal to leave the kingdom. Sad, Birbal left the kingdom and stayed at a farmer’s house in a nearby village. Birbal spent his days working at the farm. As time passed, King Akbar started missing his favourite person. One day, Akbar decided to send his guards to find Birbal. The guards looked for Birbal everywhere, but all their efforts went to waste. Akbar thought of a trick to find Birbal. He made an announcement that whoever got him a pot full of wisdom would be given a pot filled with money. The news reached all the nearby villages, and also to Birbal. The villagers held a meeting to decide how to solve the king’s mystery. Birbal offered to help, stating that he needs a month’s time. Birbal took a pot and put a small watermelon in it without cutting. After a month, the watermelon grew up to the size of the pot. This pot was sent to the King, and he was told that the wisdom should only be removed without breaking the pot. Akbar knew that this could be no one else but Birbal, and he went to bring Birbal back to his palace. Moral Hurry makes waste, think hard because there is a solution to every problem.

Parul S. K. Jain PRT (SS) DIGITAL LEARNING- MORE FREEDOM, MORE CHOICE! It is always pleasurable for a teacher to interact with her students through various platforms… more so now, when we are faced with a peculiar sense of isolation. This lockdown has taught all of us to pause… but never stop. With online classes, the students have more freedom and more choice…choice in terms of engagement- Whether the student wants to engage in the learning process? Whether the student wants to sustain engagement? Since most of the students are at home under parental supervision, attending online classes by them is ensured in most of the cases. Sustenance of students’ engagement is completely dependent on the interest and involvement in the teaching-learning process.

The lessons have to be kept crisp and interesting and develop them with a lot of student involvement. Activities, developmental questions, short quizzes during the online sessions, keep the students alert and involved. The concept of flipped learning wherein recorded videos or other forms of e-content is provided to the students before the online class. This initiates the students into the topic. Once the students read or view the e-content, they do the activity or the assignment during the online session. This practice makes students aware of their understanding level and also gives them a chance to ask questions…clarify their doubts. A successful learner is driven by his/ her own questions. When the student learns to ask questions, her inquisitive mind becomes interested in the subject. The student makes a whole-hearted effort to find answers to those questions. In this quest, effective learning takes place. This process instills in the student, the feeling of being involved in shaping her learning rather than being subjected to the learning process. Once the student becomes a part of shaping the learning process, she becomes aware of her needs and requirements. This helps her identify her interests and she feels free to pursue her learning in a stress free environment. Thus, a more meaningful learning takes place.

When the student is given the study material, she has the liberty to view and learn at a time of her choice. The student can not only decide the time but also the pace of learning. She can engage with the study material as many times as she wants, to understand and consolidate the concepts. Although the core learning content of the subject is guided by the teacher, the student has the liberty to access additional study material for higher understanding. Students are also encouraged to choose a topic of their interest while doing projects and assignments. Providing such choices to students becomes more meaningful as this learning environment is primarily driven by their desire to learn and grow. I would like to urge my students to look beyond the normal and find their interests and nurture their talents. To conclude, the success of this new system will depend on our adaptability and acceptance. Let this experience with digital learning open new roads to education which is student friendly and far reaching in bringing about a positive change. Parul S K Jain PRT (SS) AECS-6 Mumbai

Advait Kulkarni 5 N Initiatives taken by me during Lockdown What can I say about this lockdown? It is so unpleasant to be stuck in my house for about I don’t know…5 months? But in every adversity, there is an opportunity. Like in this lockdown, I got to catch up on everything I missed. Here is everything I missed and could do in the lockdown 1) Keyboard- Playing the keyboard was my favorite hobby. But, in the hustle and bustle of the day, I could not get any time to practice my keyboard. But, the lockdown made it way more interesting than ever. And I found a lot of time to practice it to my heart's content. 2) Cooking- I love cooking and one of my favorite hobbies is cooking. Preparing simple dishes like sandwiches and Maggi always made me happy. The joy was better than eating someone else's food. 3) Computer- Since online classes started, I became better equipped with technology. I became habituated at operating meetings, logging in, submitting my work, all by myself! I now enjoy it. 4) Writing blogs- What innovative to do the entire day? I often had this question. So, when my elder sister started writing blogs, I too was fascinated. With the help of my father, I made my blog site and started writing by the name `light and flurry`. So, I wrote 4 blogs during this period which can be accessed on the site lightandflurry.art.blog. The titles are: `Ultra the cat has kittens!`, `Ultra the cat has kittens! 02`, `Mother`s day` and `Protection of species`. So, even in this lockdown, I could unlock many initiatives. I got to enjoy my life too.
