Week 3 Title: Study: Pluto Should Be a Planet! Author: Rick Pantaleo. Source: https://blogs.voanews.com/science-world/2018/09/15/study-pluto-should-be-a-planet/?from=lister Summary Right now, Pluto is not a planet anymore because IAU or theInternational Astronomical Union state that a planet had to have“clear” its orbit, which mean it had to provide the greatestgravitational force in its orbit. Pluto has the gravity of Neptune, whichis; intersect twice over one rotation of the Sun. So, Pluto wasdemoted to dwarf planet status. A planetary scientist; Philip Metzger; declare that the reason for Pluto’s demotion was not valid. So, he tryto find another way to prove by went through and analyzed manyscientific literature and publications. He found one publication from1802, said that the “clear-obit” requirement to classify planets but itcannot be proved. The Florida researchers also said that the meaningof a planet is when a planet should be based on its own fundamentalproperties not from dynamics of its orbit. Page 2 of 5
My reaction/reflection: In my opinion, I think that this topic is very interesting because Iwanted to know more about Pluto, how they define the word planet, and why Pluto is not a planet. The content was great because therewere some unknown words. They also prove the evidence why Pluto shouldn’t be a planet. I have learned that the Planet mean to havethe greatest gravitational force in its orbit but Pluto is influences thegravity of Neptune. I think that we can say that Pluto is a dwarf planet because there are no scientific literature and publications to prove that Pluto is really a planet. Page 3 of 5
New words learned: (At least five new words that you have learned) New Words Definitions1. Celestial Of the sky or of heaven. (adjective) An organization recognized as the authority2. Fledged for naming celestial bodies. (of birds) able to fly. (adjective) The new IAU standards could no longer allow3. Demote (verb) the Kuiper Belt object to be considered a full- fledged planet. Demote somebody (from something) (to something) to move somebody to a lower position or rank, often as a punishment. It was demoted to dwarf planet status.4. Publication The act of printing a book, a magazine, etc. (noun) and making it available to the public; a book, a magazine, etc. that has been published.5. Fundamental After reviewing the various publications, (adjective) they say only one publication, from 1802, used the “clear-orbit” requirement to classify planets and that was later found to be based on disproven reasoning. Serious and very important; affecting the most central and important parts of something. The Florida researches say what defines a planet should be based on its own fundamental properties, rather than variables such as the dynamics of its orbit. Page 4 of 5
