In Patriotism A Glimpse of our National DaysBy: Maryam AlSuwaidiFlag DayNovamber 3It is a national event celebrated by the United Arab Emirates on the thirdof November every year, since it was announced by His Highness SheikhMohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister ofthe United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai since 2013. This occasionrepresents the unity and peace feelings among the people of the UnitedArab Emirates, as well as promotes a sense of belonging to the nation,entrenches the image of the United Arab Emirates and provides a modelof the manifestation of cohesion among the sons of the nation. On thisday, the flags are waving over every Emirati house. Activities and eventsare also held in the form of celebrations by the State represented by itsgovernment, people and residents, in preparation to celebrate this dayand an expression of love and loyalty to the UAE leadership.December 2016

Commemoration DayNovamber 30His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United ArabEmirates decided to make 30th November of every year as Martyrs Day to honor,express loyalty and recognition of the sacrifices and giving of the martyrs of thenation and its righteous sons. Those who gave their lives to keep the flag of theUnited Arab Emirates flying high, while they perform their national duties andobligations on their land and abroad in all civil, military and humane fields. HisHighness also decided to consider this national occasion as a state official holiday.On this day, special national ceremonies and events are held in which all stateinstitutions participate as well as all the people and residents of the United ArabEmirates, recalling and being proud of the dedication, sincerity and loyalty rootedin the hearts of people of the United Arab Emirates that they had while they weregraciously grant their lives in the fields of heroism, giving and duty.National DayDecember 2The UAE National Day is the day on which the United Arab Emirates celebrateson the Second of December of every year, the anniversary of the establishmentof the UAE Union. The historic launch of this union has begun by the consensusof the rulers of the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah andUmm al-Quwain on the second of December 1971 and their agreement to unite,so they issued an interim constitution which regulates the state and defines itsgoals. On the tenth of February 1972, the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah announcedits accession to the Union to complete the seven Emirates in a single frame.Then, it was gradually and positively integrating with its full potentials. Obtaining this certificate by the Department of EconomicDevelopment in Dubai is an additional step in the series of continuing efforts in the development of the internal work systems in a manner thatwould be consistent with the main thrusts of Dubai smart Government to exploit and employ the latest technology to make the experience ofDubai the most secure for residents and visitors alike.This International Standard concerned with the establishment and management of an effective system for information security in accordancewith the best international practices, after the application of a set of criteria and conditions which ensure maintaining the security, confidentialityand integrity of information. The certificate has been awarded to the Department of Economic Development in Dubai by the British UKASorganization, one of the prestigious global organizations concerned with ISO. The information security management system in the Departmentwas checked and examined by neutral entity which is SGS Consulting Company which confirmed the conformity of the applied proceduresand regulations with the standard through integrated examination processes which lasted for several days. The certificate was received byHis Excellency Sami Al Qamzi, General Director of Dubai Department of Economic Development from Dr. Shahul Mansour, Representative ofSGS Consulting Company. On this occasion, His Excellency Al Qamzi said: “This distinction is due to the continued wise leadership supportin motivating and directing government entities to adopt the best practices and provide the highest levels of service to customers in order tofacilitate their access to the electronic services safely and effectively that reflects the bright image of the Emirate of Dubai. Sector Updates 14Participation ofthe IT Department in GITEXArticleInformation Technology Department successfully ‫س‬organizes the participation of the Department inGITEX Technology Week 2016.Concerned sectors such as Registration andCommercial License and Commercial Controland Consumer Protection have participated inthe Department platform, along with Mohammedbin Rashid Establishment for Small and MediumEnterprises Development and Dubai Exports.The GITEX Technology Week is the largest regionalexhibition for information technology in the region.It holds government and private authorities of themiddle east along with the emerging most innovativeand ambitious technology companies to presenttheir world changing ideas to an audience ofinternational and local investors and those interestedin technology in general. The Department hasintroduced the newest technical projects in the field,such as Dubai Business Map, Dubai application forbusiness and institutions digital platforms, MaydaniApplication, Intellectual Property Portal, etc.The Department has gained the satisfaction andapproval of exhibition visitors for its technical servicesfacilitating and improving business activities in theEmirate of Dubai. Visitors satisfaction rate reached95.3% based on the questionnaire distributed to thevisitors of the platform.December 2016

15 Sector Updates Various Initiatives ofthe Administrative AffairsDepartment ArticleIn support of the initiative of 2016 Year of Reading, launched by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin ZayedAl Nahyan, President of the UAE, “May Allah Protect Him”, and in pursuit of promoting and enriching theDepartment Club Library in Al Ramool Center; the Administrative Affairs Department provided a variety ofbooks for the benefit of the habitues of the club, and in line with the determination of the government of Dubaito provide intelligent services, the Administrative Affairs Department have applied correspondence deliveryservice to third parties through iPad. In order to maintain the department documents, the Administrationaccomplished and completed during the first half of the year of 2016 electronic archiving plan for the documentof the Executive Director Office and his deputy in the Institutional Support Sector, the contracts Division inthe Financial Affairs Department in the Institutional Support Sector, the Administrative Affairs DepartmentOffice in the Institutional Support Sector. The number of electronically archived documents reached (16,000)documents, while the number of commercial and tourist licenses archived on paper during the first half of2016 reached 32.952. In the light of facilitating access to the provided services, the Department in coordinationwith the Information Technology Department has automated (8) of its services and will automate the restduring 2016.Department of AdministrativeAffairs Obtains ISO Renewal Article Department of Administrative Affairs in coordination with the Quality and Organizational Excellence Department obtains renewal of ISO certification (ISO environment 2004-14001, and ISO Occupational Health and Safety 2007-18001). A continuation of the Department excellence in providing its services in the field of facilities and buildings, the Department obtained the highest happiness result in the standard of facilities and buildings. The happiness percentage was 95% for 2015 in accordance with the report of Dubai Government Excellence for examining the happiness level of the clients of the Government of Dubai. December 2016

17 Sector Updates Visit the Open Day ofAjman University ArticleHuman Resources Department participated in the first jobs exhibitionof the Faculty of University City in Ajman on 19/10/2016 whichincluded the participation of several companies and institutionsto receive and guide students in their academic paths; to collecttheir CVs to hire them in the future according to their qualifications.The Department and its institutions were introduced to the studentsin general, and they get acquainted with the Department workenvironment characterized by positivity and innovation. Sector Updates 18Awareness Campaigns forEmployees in Public Health andEnvironment Article In the pursuit of promoting health awareness among its employees, the Department prepared a comprehensive plan throughout the year to organizeDecember 2016 a variety of events in cooperation with the competent entities in the UAE. It organized World Health Day, an electronic awareness competition, World No Tobacco Day, World Asthma Day and Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, on the basis of its keenness on health and safety of its employees and especially its female employees, beside the World Heart Day. The Department also published (50) awareness statements during the first half of 2016. The Department also in coordination with the Human Resources Management organized training courses on security and safety systems and placebo training on risk. It is targeting 10% of the Department employees during the year 2016. In the light of its keenness on the health of the Department employees, the Department organized campaigns for the second and the third dose of hepatitis vaccine for the department employees along with the vaccination campaign against measles for employees between (19 –34 years old). In order to entrench the culture of social responsibility and the importance of voluntary work among the employees of the Department, the Administration organized (2) events of the blood donation campaign. For the convenience of the department employees and in order to save their time and effort thus bring happiness to them, the Administration provided Delivery Service to their offices in coordination with the restaurants in the vicinity of the building. In support of the Department for the concept of rational use of natural resources and the initiative of a green economy for sustainable development, the Department has participated in Earth Hour. On the occasion of the International Workers’ Day, and in coordination with the Staff Council, the Administration has organized a luncheon for cleaners and hospitality workers in the Department for honoring their efforts. In line with the vision of the Government of Dubai «Mojtamai» by making Dubai friendly to people with disabilities in 2020, the Administration has installed a voice system to the elevators to help disabled people needs use these elevators, and make the Department Building friendly to the categories of people with disabilities.

The first stage of the project has been accomplished. The review and checking systemwas launched within an integrated work system which connects the internal and external institutionalwork and the possibility of applying the same on government and quasi-governmental entities relatedto the Department through different e-links”. UAE Innovation week 22Business in DubaiSmart ApplicationNew renovated version released in GITEXtechnology week 2016 Article The IT department has launched lately the new renovated version of “Business in Dubai” smart application in collaboration with the business registration and licensing sector in two languages Arabic & English. The renewed app helps the clients complete multiple transactions including reserving trade names, license renewal, issuing initial approval, payment of issuing license services and fines in addition of using the program to know exact locations of companies and their license activities.December 2016

He diligently worked hardto develop the Archive in the Department.
