1 ENGLISH - AN INTERESTING LANGUAGE Dear Children, More than 840 million people speak English as a first or second language. Here is a list of some interesting facts about the English language. 1. The first English dictionary was written in 1755. 2. The oldest English word that is still in use is 'town'. 3. The original name for butterfly was flutter by. 4. The word 'set' has the highest number of definitions. 5. The English language contains a lot of contronyms - words that can have contradictory meanings depending on context. Some examples are: Bill: A payment, or an invoice for payment, Bolt: To secure like bolting the door, or to flee like bolting away, Dust: To add fine particles like spraying chocolate dust over the cake, or to remove them like dusting the furniture, Left: Remained, or departed, Off: Deactivated, or activated, as an alarm, Out: Visible, as with stars showing in the sky, or invisible, in reference to lights, Overlook: To supervise, or to neglect, Rock: An immobile mass of stone, or a shaking movement, Screen: To display, show or present, or to hide. 6. There are seven ways to spell the sound 'ee' in English. This sentence contains all of them: 'He believed Caesar could see people seizing the seas'. 7. 2 What is language called? The sound which is used to express a sense is called a Language in English. For example:  I am a boy  He is a student  Mina is a girl People of different countries and nations of the world speak different languages. We are Bangladeshis and our language is Bengali. What is Grammar? The book which contains the correct methods of learning a language is called Grammar. 1. Girl a is Mina. 2. Mina is a girl. Note the 1st Sentence above. Although the sentence consists of a few words, it cannot fully express the mind because the words are randomly placed there. But the 2nd sentence expresses the whole idea because it is arranged according to the rules. What is English grammar? English Grammar is a book that contains the rules of speaking, reading and writing the English language. (The book which contains the correct methods of learning English language is called English Grammar) | English Grammar has five parts. 1. Orthography. 2. Etymology. 3. Syntax -4. Punctuation . 5. Prosody -

3 Alphabets (        ) A Venn diagram showing The modern English alphabet consists of 26 letters, and they are the Greek (left), Cyrillic (bottom) known as Latin alphabet. The word “alphabet” itself came from and Latin (right) alphabets, which the Latin word “alphabetum, ” and this Latin word came from the share many of the same letters, Greek words ‘alpha’ and ‘beta.' The English alphabet has 26 letters that start with ‘a’ and end with ‘z’. Each letter of English alphabet has two forms: capital and small letters. Large letters are often called Capital Letters. Sometimes, they are also called caps. Small and large letters together: Large letters: A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P-Q-R-S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z Small letters: a-b-c-d-e-f-g-h-i-j-k-l-m-n-o-p-q-r-s-t-u-v-w-x-y-z Sometimes, small letters are called lowercase letters, and capital letters are called uppercase letters. These terms are used during the old days of printing before the computer because the old metal blocks for setting type were kept two different cases, one is lower case for small letters, and another is upper case for large letters. All of the 26 alphabets are classified into vowels and consonants. From these 26 letters, five letters are vowels, and the remaining 21 letters are known as consonants. Vowels: A, E, I, O and U are called vowels. Vowels are speech sounds created by the open configuration of the vocal tract. By pairing with consonants, vowels make syllables. Examples of vowels in words: Sat, egg, diagram, ultrasonography, etc. Here, in the word ‘sat,' a is the vowel. In ‘egg,' e is the vowel. In ‘diagram,' a, and i, are the vowels. Similarly, in the word ‘ultrasonography,' a, o, and u are the vowels. Consonants: Apart from vowels, rest of the alphabets are called consonants. A consonant must pair with (a) vowel(s) to make a syllable. Without pairing with vowels, consonants can’t make any syllable. So, the consonant is the basic speech sound in which the breath is at least partly obstructed, and it can be combined with vowels to make syllables.

4 Example of consonants: a) Carry. C, r, r, and y are the consonants. b) Story. s, t, r, and y are consonants. c) Earning. r, n, and g are consonants. Word What is Word A word is a letter or a group of letters that have meaning when spoken or written. It’s a speech sound or combination of sounds that may consist of a single morpheme or a combination of morphemes. Words may be classified according to their meanings, uses, and actions, but it is very tough to define exactly. Example: o Good o Look o Come The words mentioned above provide meanings. So, they are examples of the word. Sentence To make a meaningful sentence, many elements must be read If we call them Elements of Sentence. Subject: Subject means person who is working. The part which names the person or thing we are speaking about is called the subject of the sentence like - (1) A boy lived in the village. (2) He liked his lessons. (3) Her parents sent her to school. Verb: Verb means verb that does action. A word that refers to an action is called a verb. (1) Munni sing a song. (2)They see the bird. Object: Object means material. That is, the subject or karma with which the action is completed

A combination of words that makes a complete sense called a sentence

6 But if the clear meaning is not expressed by the words then the sentence cannot be said. For example –  The bird is flying in the sky . it is a sentence  But, The cow is flying in the sky - it is not a sentence. (Because, cows cannot fly in the sky.)  The boy is eating rice - this is a sentence.  But, Eating rice is the boy - this is not a sentence.  Again, A man is going.- This is a sentence Again, if the words are not in proper order, the meaning is not clear and the sentence is not made. For example-  Goes home he is not a sentence  He rice eat is not a sentence.  In plays the field he - this is not a sentence. There are 5 types of sentences according to meaning: CHECK YOURSELF Write the correct order of sentence: 1) Orange are carrots . Ans: 2) Play I cricket . Ans: 3) Is banana Yellow . Ans: 4) Love to swim I . Ans: Reme mber: 1. The words of a sentence are placed in a proper order. 2. There must be a verb (action word) in a sentence. 3. A sentence always begins with a capital letter. 4. A sentence always ends with a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark. Jump ahead to:

7 1. Assertive Sentence: Sentences that make a statement; end with a full stop. For example:  I want to be a doctor.  We are going to Shimla. 2.Imperative sentence Sentences that make a request or give a command; end with a full stop. For example:  Get out.  Please keep quiet.  Stay in your seat. 3.Interrogative sentence Sentences that ask a question; end with a question mark. For example:  Where do you live?  What is your name?  will you help me? 4.Exclamatory sentence Sentences that express surprise or a strong emotion such as joy, sorrow, surprise, excitement, etc; end with an exclamation mark. For example:  What a beautiful painting!  Bravo! We won! 5. Optative Sentence: The sentence which expresses a prayer, keen wish, curse etc. is called an optative sentence. This kind of sentence generally starts with ‘may’ and ‘wish’. Sometimes, ‘may’ remains hidden. For example:  May the almighty help use .  Wish you a very successful life.  Wish you a happy journey together.  May your team win the match!

Parts of Speech Parts of speech are the classification of words categorized by their roles and functions within the structure of the language. Parts of speech encompass everything a language has in itself. Can you imagine all the words of a language can be sorted into these categories? In English, there are eight parts of speech:  Noun  Pronoun  Verb  Adjective  Adverb  Preposition  Conjunction  Interjection

9 Jump ahead to: Noun Noun refers to people, places, things, ideas, concepts, etc. Example:  Robin is a good boy.  Sylhet is the best city. Pronoun A pronoun is used to refer to a noun/noun phrase, or nouns/noun phrases; instead of the repeated use of the same noun(s)/noun phrase(s). Example: Alomgir is a good boy. He gets up early in the morning. Verb Verb shows an action or an ongoing condition. It is considered as the heart of a sentence. Example: Shahin is going home. He loves his home. Adjective Adjective modifies or describes noun in a sentence. Example: Rahim loves his beautiful daughters. His daughters also love their caring father. Adverb Adverbs modify or describe adjectives, verbs, or other adverbs. It answers the questions When? Where? How? or How much? Example: He is running fast. She always reads attentively. Preposition Preposition gives context to nouns in relationship to other nouns or pronouns. Example: I am going to France. France is in Europe. Conjunction A conjunction connects nouns, noun phrases, clauses or sentences together. Example: Jui love chocolate and chips. She loves pasta, but she hates pizza. Interjection Interjections are brief and abrupt pauses in speech, usually used for expressing emotions.

11 Capital Letter The first word of a sentence and special name always begins with a capital letter. Examples: 1.Tanjima is a good girl. 2.My favourite subject is English. Full Stop (.) Full Stop is use mark the end of a sentence. If we are not asking a question. Examples: 1.Rahim is a teacher. 2.Megha cooks the food. 3.The Padma is the biggest river of Bangladesh. 4.We should not eat fast food. Question Mark (?) Question mark (?) is used, instead of the full stop, after a question. Examples: 1. What is your name ? 2. Where do you live ? 3. Which class do you study ? 4.Who is your best friend ? Comma (,) Comma is a punctuation mark used in the sentences as a small pause or separation between items. Example: 1. I bought many fruits from market like Apple, Banana, orange. 2. we should study hard, to score good marks.  Rewrite these sentences using capital letters where necessary: 1.
