MARCHING ON! Celebrating women as they continue to take over trades, proving time again that they are more than just aides. Our Shero: It’s Women’s Month! Ntsako Mhlanga Our very first edition of 598 Mag is here! And we thought, why not kick it off by shining a spotlight on the subjects of the month – The Imbokodos – those known best to hold the knife by its edge... Very often we have seen women elevate into, and also thrive in male dominated fields. That comes at a special price though; as society, we have somehow been brainwashed into believing that women aren’t capable of anything else than being objects, housewives and baby making machines. This trait has continued, long after women’s rights were jotted into the constitution book, not to mention the Gender Equity Act. Ntsako Confidence Mhlanga from Dwarsloop has raised the bar for many other young women to have someone to look up to, not only for financial stability, but also to empower oneself, especially in a male dominated career. “I’m an actuarial analyst in the health and care sector,” the modestly charismatic Ntsako says. “My daily job involves data analysis to identify trends and causes of variation. Monitoring benefits and trends; market or client specific. Reporting on analysis, and financials. Building costing models to support product development and pricing, basically playing on a computer all day.” Sounds too complex a career! Now would you disagree that if the world needed an opinion, hers would be preferred over whatever that may come out of most politicians’ mouths? Okay, bad joke. Here, in Ntsako’s opinion, her career and many other male dominated fields should be pursued by as many young black women as possible, so as to empower themselves. “I think it's important for other young black women to pursue these careers for representation and inspiration for other young girls. This also gets us a seat at the table to influence decisions and champion change.
