DEFINITIONS OF MANAGEMENT 6 According to Harold Koontz, “Management is an art of getting things done through and with the people in formally organized groups. It is an art of creating an environment in which people can perform and individuals and can co-operate towards attainment of group goals”. According to F.W. MANAGERIAL SKILLS 18 1. Technical Skill :  It is the Knowledge and skills which is used to perform specific tasks. Example : Accountants, engineers, doctors as these all profession need specialized technical skills for their respective professions.  Managers, need technical skills for effective task performance at the lower and middle levels. 2. Human Skill :  It is the Ability to work with, understand, and motivate other people as individuals or in groups.  According to Management theorist Mintzberg, the top (and middle) managers spend their time: 59 percent in meetings, 6 percent on the phone, and 3 percent on tours. 3. PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT The management principles are the statements of fundamental truth based on logic which provides guidelines for 20 managerial decision making and actions. These principles are derived: - On the basis of observation and analysis i.e. practical experience of managers. By conducting experimental studies. PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 2) Authority & Responsibility : 21 Authority must be equal to Responsibility. According to Henri Fayol, there should be a balance between Authority(power) and Responsibility (Duties). The right to give orders should not be considered without responsibility. 3) Discipline : Discipline means respecting the rules and regulations of the organization. Discipline may be Self-discipline, or it may be Enforced discipline. PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 22 4) Unity of Command : According to this principle, a subordinate (employee) must receive orders from only one superior (boss or manager). 5) Unit of Direction : There should be one boss with one Plan for the organization. PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 24 7) Remuneration : Remuneration is the price received by the services . Pay should be fair to both the employee and the firm. If an organization wants efficient employees and best performance, then it should have a good remuneration policy. 8) Centralization : In centralization, the authority is concentrated only in few hands . However, in decentralization, the authority is distributed to all the levels of management. PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT 25 9) Scalar Chain : The chain of command, sometimes called the scalar chain, is the formal line of authority, communication, and responsibility within an organization. 10) Oder : There must be an orderly placement of the resources such as Men and Women, Money, Materials, etc. Human and material resources must be in the right place at the right time. The equity principle suggests that the managers must be kind as well as equally fair to the subordinates. 12) Stability of Tenure of Personnel : Although it could take a lot of time, Employees need to be given fair enough time to settle into their jobs. This is because an initiative gives satisfaction to the employees and brings success to the organization. It allows the subordinates to think out a plan and do what it takes to make it happen. 14) Esprit De Corps : Esprit de Corps means “Team Spirit”. Therefore, the management should create unity, co-operation, and team-spirit among the employees. PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT 28  Frederick Winslow Taylor (20 March 1856-21 March 1915), widely known as F. W. Taylor, was an American mechanical engineer who sought to improve industrial efficiency.  He is regarded as the father of scientific management, and was one of the first management consultants. He have given the Scientific principles of Management defined as follows : Science not rule of thumb - There should be scientific study and analysis of each element of job rather than adopting old rule of the thumb approach on a hit and miss method. Encourage “thinking before doing”. PRINCIPLES OF SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT 29 Cooperation not individualism - Taylor emphasized on the importance of cooperative group effort between the management and workers in achieving the organization's goals and not individualism.
