7 History and Development Relaxation strategies have been used as an integral component of major therapeutic traditions. The technique stems primarily from the work of Edmund Jacobson. It is a detailed procedure for reducing muscular tension. The premise of the technique is based on is that relaxing the muscles could relax the mind as well. RELAXATION TECHNIQUES 8 1. Autogenic Training: Both visual imagery and body awareness are used to induce a deep state of relaxation in an individual. The person is asked to imagine a peaceful place or incidents and then focuses on different physical sensation, moving from the feet to the head.
