Commission and gifts don’t add value to the society it dilutes. China clearly wants more. The boasting Chinese ambassador went public on state media desiring that Mandarin becomes a subject in all Namibian schools which, through language, implies even more influence over societies and cultures. They are obsessed with the Hosea Kutako Airport project, but Dr Geingob cancelled the tender and, most embarrassingly, his decree was challenged in court in by his own appointees and they lost. Surely Namibia wants commitment from China to employ Namibian citizens in projects as workers and not as slaves who must carry human waste in plastic bags. Namibia would like to get money back that left the country through tax evasion and money laundering and wants the Chinese government to be vigilant against organised crime syndicates emanating from the homeland. And of course, since Namibians will respect the laws and customs of China, they surely demands the same from any friend. In the fast-changing international political world and a struggle between Russia and the old West, unravelling alliances in Europa and a type of power politics that the world has not seen for decades, Namibia is uniquely placed and gifted with a president who has cut his teeth in the international political halls of power. Namibia is not too small to be a political counterweight in many of the dramatic changes in the Southern African region, Africa and the rest of the world. Namibia is stable and its leader is credible. This is a priceless commodity for years to come as China is not the last visit but the first and fortunately through the doors of an international titan. The millions of African refugees in Europe, the killing fields of the Middle East and the clandestine techno and economic wars that are underway will forever know of a Namibia who breached the Great Wall in the quest for mutual benefit.
