Foundation for CSR @ Redington REDINGTON CSR – CONNECT October 2019 “A healthy outside starts from the inside” Redington Foundation Healthcare Initiatives

Commit in public so that you can’t back out! Are you stuck doing things within your comfort zone? Is there something you have really been wanting to try, but if it makes you nervous or uncertain, you find yourself asking, “What if I fail?”. Redirect your thinking. Don’t ask yourself “What if I fail?”, and instead ask, “What if I succeed?!”. Trying new things can be intimidating, and can lead us to think that it is easier to run away from the responsibility than facing it. I had a comfort life of corporate and had been a fairly successful professional for 32 years. Once I got into the CSR activities of our company in the year 2015, the more personal oriented life of mine was completely changed. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities fascinated me and therefore I went out of turn to do this by foregoing my personal life. Serving the society that too with targets, a nightmare for the team. There were times when I felt that I couldn’t stick to a schedule. The body was ready but the mind was distracted. I found myself asking questions like Can I do? Won’t it take a toll on me? May be I should set smaller targets. But I realised that I was doing this because I WANTED TO DO IT. Once I realised that there was no looking back, I also realised that endurance is basically a connection between our self and the universe. There is no concept of failure or success here. It is just the experience of living in the moment. This though keeps me going, I gave up some of my vices too. My advice out of my experience is, commit in public so that you can’t back out. Hashtag your activities on the mode you like if that motivates you. To stay motivated you have to focus on long-term goals and short-term accomplishments. You can set up a personal reward system, simplify your life by prioritising things and tick them on your list. Segregate your targets, create healthy habits and sow gratitude as it can add to your motivation. M Muthukumarasamy Managing Trustee

Students Corner THE SECRET OF MY FATHER’S ENERGY Article By, M. Umamaheswari 3rd year B.com ESLC – Thiruvalluvar College, Papanasam Hi Everyone, today I would like to introduce you the two most important personalities of my life. One is my father and another one is his best friend. But in this article, I am going to talk more about my father’s best friend. This friend of my father had accompanied him for past four decades. Their bonding till now is evergreen. My father and his friend are very simple personalities as they lead a simple life, but much useful to others. Physically they both may appear to be old but actually they are young and energetic. My father’s best friend is none other than his own cycle. My father says that this cycle knows all his sufferings, pains, happiness, betrayals, excitements, embarrassments etc., as it is travelling with him everyday in this forty years. I sometimes feel quite jealous about their bonding. My father simply loves riding on his cycle. Even I love to accompany my father in his ride. I see my father riding the bycycle with passion and love which I feel like even a Lamborghini would not give him this feel. My father and his friend have lot of experiences and sweet memories in their life. I think , his best friend - his bycycle is the best gift that my father can give me for future. So that whenever I see this cycle I will also restore all the experiences that my father had in his life and the suffering that he undergone, to make me strong enough to fight in life. I would like to call my father “The Alexander the Great” and my father’s cycle “ The Alexander’s Hero”. 12

Understanding CSR Initiatives under lean management (Self-musings born out of innate curiosity !!!) Article By Kothandapani Chandrasekaran CSR Operations Head At 58 still not an age for relaxation from work life, it was not an easy decision to call it quits for the then coveted senior leader professional persona that I was into, in a highly trusted and credible prestigious print media publication house of South India. Journalism par excellence is the praise & pride its readers hold in their bosom. Nevertheless, after consciously making up the mind I was out of the long 36 plus most busy official journey through long twirling roads with rich experiences, learnings, and lessons for self. But then I realized my not so engaged hours at days and nights kicked me from within to get out of the four walls and get young-aged. As I was believing, the day did dawn and the phone call on that bright sunny fortune would remain ever etched green in my memories. Change of life at 60 after the phone call & the opportunity bestowed on me which followed. Yes, I am into this wonderful world of CSR. Redington Foundation with excellent stride of signature achievements and practicing the philosophy of being humble to recognize the need that there are endless opportunities for continuous improvement. My entry has been at the time when our Foundation embarked into a significant level of focused actions that directly translate to value to beneficiaries. Since my joining, the learnings and knowledge orientation with regards to our CSR initiatives has been a kind of roller coaster ride on account of new changes and course corrections announced basis corporate principles to upgrade efficiency & effectiveness. The intrinsic nature of CSR being service to have nots & most needy of the society, my thoughts rolled towards the virtue of lean management in my new assignment. 14

In my search for lean principles, the following were the lessons learned:  Align every member of the team understand the mission, values and strategic priorities of our CSR initiatives  Silos have no place in a genuine work environment  Cross-functional collaboration and communication is pre-requisite to face challenges Share knowledge and experiences across geographies  Be tenacious and seek out / address root-causes by empowering the members during the work to speak up, identify issues and find solutions  Get self-engaged and engage senior leaders of the team to leverage the skills, worthwhile inputs, and observations of their respective members of team  Emphasize consciousness in methodical work practices to propel continuous improvement  Intentionally follow the simple systems of Plan, Do, Study & Act  Create a culture where members feel safe speaking up and take time to make improvements proactively along the way  Document standard work & make it accessible for regular review  Identify & share current best practices across geographies  Empower members to make pertinent autonomous decisions whenever possible to respond with agility and to ensure resilience  Be thoughtful to identify stumbling blocks, trouble spots and be able to identify errors for correction while at the same time innovate solutions.  Help move the improvement process by way of alerts, notifications and improvement impact reporting  Make team members feel valued and recognized for their contributions.  Drive home the culture of being grateful to recognize co-employee’s significant workable ideas Thus, towards the end, my musings get linked strongly to the concept and discipline of effective lean management. Fundamentally, CSR initiatives are activities to show our commitment to social betterment. There is a clear need to adopt an effective operations management to minimize damage to the environment, enhance working conditions, conserve materials, to provide necessary evidence through real-life applications, to reap the benefit of the increase in productivity and quality inside the organization besides serving well the cause of social responsibility. 15

Parents in their Wards Career Development Article By Sabina Seelan, Project Coordinator, Madurai Cluster Parents influence is an important factor in the student’s decision to deliberate on the choice of their career and commit to the planning that is necessary to compete in current job market. They should encourage their wards to utilize all the available opportunities, so that they are well equipped to begin their career journey upon graduation. How Parents can support the wards during their career exploration.  Encourage son/ daughter to regularly attend the Employability Skill Training programs so that they can prepare the resume, search for appropriate jobs, practice interviewing and much more.  Support their daughter / son to think realistically about their individual skills and interests.  Help their wards to recognize and develop their strengths and guide them not to dwell on their weakness.  Allow their wards to make decisions.
