LOT 104 3CS 1872 PCGS PR68 Our sister company, Legend Numismatics, is very jealous of this monster! Exquisite deep mirrors beam boldly from all over. The reflection is nearly blinding. The mirrors are clean and have remarkable clarity. Both sides enjoy a bath from Mother Nature of original emerald green/royal blue/violet/gold colors. LOT 113 5C 1880 PCGS MS65 CAC The KEY date to the Shield nickel series and this GEM is one of the FINEST extant examples from an original mintage of only 16,000. The presently offered GEM has a pleasing semi-Prooflike luster that radiates around exceptionally well struck devices. You can tell from across the room that this highly lustrous coin has a great look. It is accentuated by a light dusting of gentle gold tone. Even under a powerful loupe, you will be unable to find a single flaw worthy of mention. Overall, the eye appeal is stupendous! Aside from being a RARE date to find in any Mint State grade, it is confusing for many numismatists to determine circulation strikes from Proofs, as they were both struck from the same set of dies. Circulation strikes are identifiable by the die chip on the reverse under the second T in STATES and a little projection that comes off the dentils between NT in CENTS. PCGS 7, NGC 4, CAC 2. There are two MS66 finer at PCGS, and that is it! (Both MS66s have been offered in auction a few times over the last several years, but due to high reserves, neither has sold). This is the only CAC approved MS65 to sell in auction, selling most recently in September 2018 for $58,500. The MS65 PCGS Price Guide value is $70,000, and we think this coin could again break that level! LOT 117 5C 1884 PCGS MS66+ CAC Among the HIGHEST graded for the date. While it does not command the attention of the 1885 or 1886 nickels, the 1884 is very scarce in MS66 grades and excessively RARE in MS67 (non-existent in CAC). LOT 118 5C 1886 PCGS MS66+ CAC This piece is not supposed to exist. It’s incredibly hard to find these even in MS65! We fully agree this is a very HIGH END piece. Both sides have satiny surfaces tha offer hints of semi-prooflike mirrors. The luster is surprisingly strong and booms from all over. There is an ultra light hint of gold-but this coin looks untoned for the most part. There are no problems visible. If you use a strong glass, you will see nothing to make you love this coin less. Miss Liberty and the details are exceptionally struck (note there is slight weakness in the stars at 11+12:00). The eye appeal is tremendous! PCGS 14 NGC 3, CAC 10. PCGS has graded 2 in MS66+ with 3 higher. We have always disagreed with the pops. We have only ever seen ONE other MS66 and we hardly even see MS65’s that are real GEM’s. The last PCGS CAC MS66+ to sell in auction brought $33,600 in January 2018. We can not stress enough how great the rarity of this date is in TRUE GEM. A PCGS MS67 NON CAC sold for $64,625 in 2018. The 86 is one of the KEYS to the series, always sought regardless of condition. A SUPERB coin like this is essentially incomprehensible! Tied with just a single coin for FINEST graded at either service, Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud to present it in its full glory. A blinding cartwheel luster glows white hot on both sides. A delicate pastel rainbow iridescent tone can be seen near the peripheries blending to an icy silver-nickel-blue and clear gold in the centers. Sharply struck on both sides from a pair of shattered dies, spidery die cracks can be seen throughout the legends adding character to this beauty’s stunning visual allure. Using a strong loupe we can only see a few minor mint made planchet flakes, but there really is nothing to detract from the SUPERB eye appeal. PCGS 3, NGC 1. PCGS has a price of $74,000 on CoinFacts. One of the very rarest dates in the series, the 8/7 was not discovered for some one dozen years after they were struck, offered for the first time in Paul Lange’s March 1930 auction. Rare in all grades, especially so in Mint State, the presently offered example is very high end and would fit nicely in a great set. Both sides show just the barest trace of perceptible wear in the form of the slightest touch of high point friction. Well struck and displaying a soft, satiny lustrous sheen below the original toning, this coin has a great eye appeal. LOT 135 5C 1918/7-D PCGS MS64+ CAC The Buffalo nickel series is one of the most popularly collected series in U.S. Coins. From 1913 to 1938, this type saw World War I, the Roaring 20s, and the Great Depression, and remained in circulation throughout World War II and beyond. Among the many many dates and mintmarks are many conditionally rare issues, as well as important varieties that are listed in the Guide Book of U.S. Coins (Red Book), and are treated as a regular date in the series. The overdate 1918/7-D is one of those. A single overdated die was prepared and shipped to the Denver mint, and a relatively small number of the 8.3 million nickels produced were of this variety. The discovery of this rare overdate was not made until 1931, by then many were extensively circulated, and thus the issue is rare in all grades, and especially so in near GEM Mint State and finer, the harder it is to find. With just a handful graded finer, this marvelous example will delight any serious collector. The first thing that catches your eye is the very pretty iridescent toning that caresses both sides. A radiant, pearly, nickel-sliver luster blooms in the light, enlightening the rose and pastel blue tones. Sharply struck up, the overdate is clearly visible to the naked eye. The surfaces are of exceptional quality, and were it not for a single carbon fleck on the Indian’s neck, this coin would qualify as a full GEM. While we mention this minor “flaw” it serves as a helpful “pedigree marker” that will forever identify this beautiful coin. A Buffalo nickel to be treasured and appreciated for its stunning overall visual allure, we cannot stress enough its outstanding qualities. PCGS 24, NGC 13, CAC 4. While PCGS has 3 coins listed on the Population Report in MS64+, only one has ever sold in auction, and it is this one! Its first appearance in June 2011, was without CAC approval and it realized a robust $161,000. More recently it sold for a “cheap” $99,000. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $125,000. Keeping in mind that the last MS65 to sell in auction was in August 2013, where one sold for $258,000. This marvelous, borderline GEM is worth including in the FINEST of Buffalo nickel collections and will see very strong bidding when it does cross the block. LRCA wishes the winning bidder a hearty congratulations in advance for adding this amazing coin to their collection, and thus elevating it to a higher level! Good luck! One thing we will never do is offer low ball estimates in order to claim stronger sales. These published estimates represent what Legend Rare Coin Auctions determines to be an approximate high wholesale value for the coin. LOT 142 5C 1937-D 3 LEGGED. PCGS MS65 A frosty, lustrous GEM example of this famed 20th century Buffalo nickel variety. A classic of American numismatics, even non-collectors have heard of this coin. A soft dusting of pastel iridescent toning, offering green, gold, orange, and rose hues, are enlivened by the bold underlying luster that glows wonderfully in the fields. The devices are nicely rendered by a generally bold strike. The die rust and die clashes are seen on both sides, otherwise, the surfaces are generally clean, free of any serious marks. The eye appeal is quite pleasing. The story of these 3-Legged Buffalo nickels has been told over and over, but it is what makes this a classic issue. A pair of dies clashed, coming together without a blank planchet between them. The clashed dies left traces of design elements from the opposite side on the other. A mint employee noted the clashes, pulled the dies from service, and overzealously polished the reverse with an emery board, accidentally removing one of the buffalo’s front legs. These have been popular since their discovery shortly after being put into circulation, thus the somewhat large number of AU and better examples. PCGS 55, NGC 56. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $26,500. We like the eye appeal of this lovely toned GEM better than that of the one we sold in January 2019 Regency Auction 30 for $20,563. LOT 168 H10C 1797 16 STARS. PCGS MS65+ CAC An exquisite GEM LM-2! There are not enough adjectives to properly convey the SUPERB qualities of this GEM 1797 half dime. To think a coin like this could survive in such PRISTINE condition boggles the mind! Obverse dies were prepared with 13, 15, and 16 stars. Sharply struck on both sides, this pleasing GEM has a strong luster that comes out with a brilliant vibrance that glows in the light and underlies a sumptuous, original patination. Golds, blues, and greens blend over pearly-silver surfaces. The design elements are very sharp overall with only some minor and typical weakness in the central devices of the eagle. Struck from clashed dies, parts of the reverse wreath can be seen in the field in front of Liberty’s portrait. The eye appeal is exceptional and the quality is stunning! PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 1. LOT 174 10C 1798/7 16 STARS REVERSE. PCGS MS64 JR-1. This is truly a very CHOICE Mint State Bust dime. This coin has a few traits that make it especially interesting. First it is the first of two die marriages that features this overdate obverse, this one, paired with the 16 Star reverse is the only die engraved by John Gardner, and not Robert Scot, and it was also employed to strike 1797 BD-1 quarter eagles. The present coin has a vibrant, brilliant luster that is boldly retained under light pewter-silver in the centers with a delicate rose overlay and deeper slate-blue at the peripheries. Rather crisply struck from clashed, lapped, and damaged dies, you can see all forms of interesting die characteristics throughout the obverse, including a line that starts at star 3, is interrupted by the bust, and then picks up again at Liberty’s nose, before terminating at star 9. This is listed in the JR reference as being from an early strike, this feature later wears away and is not seen on most specimens. The eye appeal is wonderful for any early dime, and especially so for a 1798. PCGS 9, NGC 3. The most recent example to sell was from a later die state, and had distracting, splotchy toning that pales when compared to this coin. In looking at previous auction records, we cannot find this coin having previously sold in auction. The current PCGS Price Guide value lists a value of $35,000. LOT 197 10C 1916-D MERCURY. PCGS MS64 FB CAC A beautifully toned and totally original example of this important KEY date issue. This is the prettiest example this cataloger can remember ever handling, and that includes several GEMS. This coin was allowed to sit in an old Wayte Raymond or Library of Coins album, for ages, likely recieved at the time of issue, and was able to acquire the vivid cobalt, amber, orange, and teal hues that grace the peripheries on both sides. Brilliant, silver luster glows vibrantly on both sides and the strike is sharp throughout. A tiny tick or two is all that limits this coin the assigned MS64 grade, but the eye appeal is totally unique and something truly special to behold. The 16-D is one of the famed keys of the 20th century. With only 264,000 were struck, most of which disappeared into circulation at the time of issue, remaining in commercial channels for a long time. These usually come in either Fair-2 to VG-8, or in lower grade Mint State coins. It is truly scarce in MS64 grade and RARE any finer! Regardless of the grade, there is always demand from collectors for a 16-D. PCGS 109, NGC 62, CAC 14. We sold one for $21,150 in our September 2018 Regency Auction and prior to that, one sold for $22,800 in the 2018 FUN auction. Bold die lines are the only thing we can see in the fields, even using a strong glass. The bands are fully split and rounded, a key feature for the FB designation. PCGS 15, NGC 3. The Hallett Collection coin, which we sold in September 2018, realized $8,519 and the current Collectors Universe value is listed at $10,500. Sharply struck devices have a wonderful, glossy texture to them that gleams with a seductive brilliance that contrasts against the delicately dusted gold iridescent toning. This is an amazing survivor of the date. Every detail is very well struck and fully formed, with crisp, full definition. Like many issues struck from 1929 to 1934, the Great Depression resulted in few high grade examples for collectors today. Indeed, as the nation sank deeper into the Depression, the need for coinage fell dramatically, the mintage of dimes fell to 1.8 million and because a dime did mean something to so many people suffering from the ravages of the economic situation, precious few were saved at the time of issue. That an example in such a lofty state of preservation still survives is just by chance! PCGS 10, NGC 2, CAC 5. This is the ONLY MS67+ graded and NONE are graded finer.
