THE BEAR CREEK COLLECTION LOT 249 $1 1859-S PCGS AU53 The 59-S dollar represents the first silver dollar issue produced at the San Francisco mint, and is a lower mintage issue of just 20,000. The primary reason for striking this issue was for foreign trade, notably in Asia. When in an attempt to rebalance the gold to silver ratio in domestic circulation in 1853, the half dime through half dollar had their weights reduced, making the dollar the only silver coin of the realm that would be accepted in international trade, particularly in China. The entirety of the mintage of 1859-S dollars was exported, and they circulated widely. Most known examples are in VF grade or so. LOT 261 T$1 1878-S TRADE STRUCK 5% OFF CENTER. PCGS XF40 A remarkably RARE and impressive mint error, one of perhaps three known Trade dollars struck off center. It is, in the words of noted error specialist, Fred Weinberg, a “trophy” error coin. Struck off center towards 1:00 on the obverse, there is a margin along the opposite rim. We highly doubt that this coin actually circulated, but was carried by the fortuitous person who discovered it as a pocket piece. Only light friction is noted, all the devices retain strong definition throughout. Very cool, deep toning “pulls away” from the peripheral devices accentuating the off center strike. LOT 264 $1 1878 7TF. REVERSE OF 1878. PCGS MS66 PL VAM-84, LINE UNDER 8. This is the SINGLE FINEST example of this die variety in the PL designation at PCGS! Its deeply beaming mirrors are captivating and if the devices had a bit more contrast would likely be a borderline DMPL. Sharply struck devices have a nice frosty texture, especially on the cheek and eagle. The obverse die was clearly in its earliest state, as there is a tone of reflection in the recesses of the design elements. A few scattered tiny marks are seen here and there, amplified by the PL nature of the surfaces. The eye appeal is spectacular. PCGS 19, NGC 4. This is the SOLE example of the VAM graded 66 PL and none are finer for the date or variety in the PL designation. This coin brought a record price when it sold in February 2017 for $9,988. While the current Collectors Universe value is $7,500, we know this one will yet again attract intense bidding interest from specialists. Keep in mind that before this coin sold, there had not been one sold since the 2008 FUN auction! Clearly these don’t appear in auction with any frequency! Good luck! PCGS# 7075 | ESTIMATE: $6,000+ LOT 265 $1 1878 7 TAILFEATHERS. REVERSE OF 1879. PCGS MS66 RARE in this grade, the 7 TF, Reverse of ‘79 is represented by just 37 in MS66 or finer grades. A lovely and highly lustrous GEM with a stunning look. The thickly frosted devices stand out with fully and crisply formed design elements. The highly lustrous fields have a semi-reflective brilliance which are a touch Prooflike. A scattered tick or two can be seen with the aid of a strong glass, but they do not impact the great eye appeal. PCGS 33, NGC 12. The most recent example we sold realized $6,756 in our June 2019 Regency Auction and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $7,500. Just four coins have ever graded higher at PCGS, and there are no auction records for any of them, making this a very important opportunity for any Morgan dollar collector working on a high ranking Registry Set. LOT 266 $1 1878-CC PCGS MS64 DMPL CAC When you are cataloguing away and see yourself smiling back at you from the coin in your hand because the intensity of the mirrored fields is so deep and clear, you know you are holding a winner! What a refreshingly choice beauty! Blast white frost as thick as icing graces needle sharp design details. Lovely contrast with the reflective surfaces. Worthy of the coveted “green bean.” PCGS 126, NGC 117, CAC 22. No recent auction records for CAC stickered pieces. Collectors Universe Price Guide lists the coin for $3,500. We think this coin will take all of that and then some if you want to be the successful bidder. Good luck! PCGS# 97081 | ESTIMATE: $3,000+ LOT 267 $1 1878-CC PCGS MS66+ PL CAC A marvelous GEM that is tied for FINEST PL graded at PCGS. Truly a delight to behold, this is a stunning high grade example of the first CC mint Morgan dollar. Bold, brilliant, radiating lustrous surfaces are blast white with a blazing reflective look and 5”+ mirrors. Sharply struck through out, the devices are wonderfully frosted and have bold contrast. The surfaces are clean and smooth without any serious marks. The eye appeal is superb! PCGS 12, NGC 9, CAC 3. There are 3 graded MS66+ PL at the apex of the PCGS Population Report. Only one of these has ever sold in auction, a non-CAC coin, which brought $12,000 in October 2018. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $15,000 and this one should bring that or more. Indeed, the CAC CPG value in MS66 PL is $14,500. With NONE FINER, this is bound for a WORLD CLASS Morgan dollar collection. PCGS# 7081 | ESTIMATE: $14,000+ LOT 268 $1 1878-S PCGS MS66 CAC Ex Sunnywood/Simpson Collection. POLYCHROMATIC color that will blow your mind! WOW, what an incredible blend of vibrant aquamarine blue, cardinal red, fiery orange and magenta hues intermingled with soft pastel accents of celery green, peach, topaz blue, and honey gold. Intense luster is not diminished by the rich color, in fact it heightens the aesthetic appeal. Bold strike. A couple of well concealed marks are seen under powerful magnification. LOT 269 $1 1878-S PCGS MS67 CAC An unimpeachable SUPERB GEM! The brilliant, rolling cartwheel luster is vivid and intense, giving this exceptionally PQ coin a stunning look. The smoothness of the surfaces accent the clean, sharply struck up devices that have a rich frosty texture. The surfaces are devoid of any serious contact, we would not flinch if this coin was in a 67+ holder (no guarantees). Touches of clear gold can be seen at the peripheries adding a dimension to the pleasing eye appeal. PCGS 36, NGC 33, CAC 15. Only 8 PCGS MS67 CAC examples have sold in auction, ranging from $9,600 to $19,200, and the average APR is $14,294. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $10,000 and the CAC CPG value is $13,000. PCGS# 7082 | ESTIMATE: $10,000+ LOT 270 $1 1879-CC PCGS MS64 A VERY CHOICE Mint State example of this important KEY date issue. Very scarce in such a high grade, and in constant demand from collectors, this lovely MS64 has a bold mint luster in the fields that contrasts nicely against the thick white frosty texture of the devices. The luster radiates with brilliant, swirling cartwheels, accenting the nicely struck devices. Scattered breaks in the frost are seen with the aid of a glass, only at certain angles and they have no serious impact on he eye appeal. Here is another coin that we are scratching our heads what precluded CAC approving it. PCGS 793, NGC 381. Two examples sold in the 2019 ANA auction for $7,200, but in 2018 these were consistently selling between $8,000 and $9,500. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $9,500. PCGS# 7086 | ESTIMATE: $6,750+ LOT 271 $1 1880 PCGS MS66+ CAC This is such an underrated date in this grade, especially when it is the real deal like this coin is. We unhesitatingly grade it an MS66.8+++. Keep in mind, there are NO MS67’s graded! Sensational surfaces are pretty much clean overall. If you use a glass or look really hard there some super light and tiny scuffs/frost breaks on the obverse. The reverse is 100% MS67 quality. Both sides are intensely lustrous. The color is a GEM frosty white. We do NOT believe this coin has been dipped. Miss Liberty and the details are thickly frosted and are sharply stuck. PCGS 213, NC 42, CAC 27. PCGS has graded 32 in MS66+. The last PCGS CAC piece to sell in auction brought $4,817.50 in September 2019. Another brought $5,400.00 the same month of 2019. LOT 272 $1 1880-CC 8/HIGH 7. PCGS MS67+ Ex Gold River Collection. This beautifully preserved SUPERB GEM is tied for FINEST graded at either service with just two other MS67+s. One of the many popular varieties in this series, the 8/7 high 7 is readily evident with a low power glass. This stunning coin offers a bold, semi-reflective luster that radiates boldly throughout the fields, which show almost fully PL in places. The devices are razor sharp in definition and boast a thick, creamy white frost. While the other two coins are blast white, this gorgeous coin offers a frame of flaming crimson and gold patina about the rims, which is particularly bold on the reverse. Some scattered traces of minor contact can be located with the aid of a glass, we are not sure why CAC did not bean this marvelous coin. PCGS 3, NGC 0. The other two coins are blast white and CAC, and both sold in 2019, the Shucart coin sold in September 2019 for $84,000 and the former Tuxedo Park Collection coin sold in February 2019 for $52,800 and is now impounded in the D.L. Hansen Collection. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $68,000. A coin of this quality and grade will certainly see strong bidding from Registry Set collectors. As part of the Gold River Collection, we know that this coin is high end and worthy of another amazing set. Good luck. PCGS# 7102 | ESTIMATE: $45,000+ 132
LOT 273 $1 1880-S PCGS MS67 CAC A beautifully toned SUPERB GEM 80-S dollar. A band of multicolored rainbow toning graces the top 15% of the obverse with great gold, red, purple, and orange hues, yielding to a swath of sky-blue/teal. The color rates a 9 on our 10-point color scale, the toning popping vividly with the vibrance of the cartwheel luster. Only a tiny tick on the cheek limits the grade, we love the look of this SUPERB example. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify over 5,640 coins in MS67, but only 845 have been approved by CAC. The value of this coin is derived from the color and will see very strong bidding when it crosses the block. PCGS# 7118 | ESTIMATE: $1,250+ LOT 274 $1 1880-S PCGS MS68+ CAC Whoa! This is a simply PQ, exemplary SUPERB GEM Morgan dollar! Seriously, even if you seek only a single example for your collection, look no further! This coin’s quality is insane! Intense, radial cartwheel luster is distinctly prooflike. Ms. Liberty and all the devices are sharply struck and fully frosted, creating a beauteous contrast between the reliefs and fields. A touch of toning seen at UNUM is fantastic, adding to the eye appeal. The cheek and fields are exceptionally clean, free of any distracting marks or ticks. PCGS 273, NGC 302, CAC 133. There are 33 graded MS68+ at PCGS and just 5 graded finer. The current Collectors Universe value is $14,000 and the last one we sold was in our May 2018 Regency Auction for $12,925. None of the PCGS MS69s have ever sold in auction, making this one of the FINEST obtainable 80-S dollars that on the market and available to collectors. PCGS MS67 DMPL CAC LRCA is proud to offer this arguably FINEST KNOWN example of this popular Hot 50 VAM variety. The remnants of the 9 under the 0 in the date clearly shows under a glass. This is truly a marvelous DMPL! Even the most fastidious of old time DMPL collectors will easily fall in love with the eye appeal and technical quality of this SUPERB GEM. The high quality fields show off a deep reflection, beaming a mirrored image a full 8”+ away. The eye appeal is even more impressive when you combine the sharp, frosty devices that stand in stark contrast with the fields. A glass will reveal a widely scattered tick or two, none of which have an impact on the overall eye appeal. PCGS 3, NGC 0, CAC 1. Clearly there are no accurate pricing guides for this coin. The last time a MS67 DMPL sold in auction was in July 2008, a record from nearly a decade ago that is basically useless. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $16,000, but that amount could prove to be low. The coin that sold in 2008 realized a record for the issue, and we know that record will fall when this one crosses the block. LOT 276 $1 1881-CC PCGS MS66 DMPL What a looker! Deep, beaming reflective fields have a wonderful flash that is amplified by a bold luster. The frosted devices are thickly frosted and have a profound contrast between the design elements and the mirrored fields that create an almost cameo like appearance. Brilliantly untoned in any way, this better Carson City date is excessively rare in any higher DMPL grade. PCGS 69, NGC 10. LRCA had the honor of selling the two most recent non-CAC PCGS MS66 DMPLs, realizing $6,756 and $6,050 in September and June 2018 respectively. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $7,500. With just seven coins graded higher, anything higher is going to carry a much higher price tag. This very pretty GEM will fit nicely in any respectable collection. Good luck! PCGS# 97127 | ESTIMATE: $5,500+ LOT 277 $1 1881-O PCGS MS65+ CAC The 81-O dollar is a conditionally challenging date, rarely seen above MS65 and is also a date that is rarely seen with any kind of toning. This coin looks like it sat at the top of the bank roll, where the paper covered all but the central obverse portion, imparting a light gold, lilac, and pearly tan patina, leaving the center brilliant silver. The reverse is likewise untoned. Sharply struck for the issue and displaying very clean surfaces, the eye appeal is quite nice. PCGS 929, NGC 470, CAC 85. There are 96 graded MS65+ at PCGS and we sold one with CAC approval in our January 2019 Regency Auction for $1,998 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $2,000. Just 51 have ever graded finer at PCGS, this is a great coin for anyone working on a toned set. Bidding will be strong for this one. PCGS# 7128 | ESTIMATE: $1,200+ LOT 278 $1 1881-O PCGS MS66 This is a Morgan dollar that checks off so many qualities that many collectors look for: high grade, beautiful tone, sharp strike, and contender for a high ranking Registry Set. As one of the highest graded 80-Os (only 8 MS66+s have graded higher), this spectacular coin has a lot to offer the collector for a Registry Set. Add to that a stunning melange of brilliant gold, tangerine-orange, purple, azure, pink and green hues are brought together by a rich cartwheel luster. We rate the color as an 8.5 overall, but for a date that rarely comes with bold toning, it could be rated on a curve as a 9. The reverse is mostly brilliant with just a touch of olive, and russet-tan at the upper rim. The lustrous reverse also boasts hints of a semi-PL reflection. Sharply struck for the date, crisp details give this coin an overall wonderful look. A smattering of very minor contact, hidden under the dramatic rainbow toning and not bothering the impact of the eye appeal, is the only reason we think CAC did not bean this high grade beauty. PCGS 43, NGC 9. This coin sold for $8,225 nearly three years ago, recognized for its outstanding visual allure. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $7,500 and just keep in mind that only 8 are graded slightly higher as 66+, making this a great coin for inclusion in a high ranked set. LOT 279 $1 1881-O PCGS MS66 One of the highest graded of this conditionally challenging year. While over 5.7 million Morgan dollars were struck at New Orleans in 1881, the vast majority of these either disappeared into circulation or were melted down in 1918. Today, combined populations between PCGS and NGC show fewer than 1,500 have graded in MS65 or better grades, none have been graded finer than MS66+ at PCGS. This GEM is thickly frosted with a bold satiny luster. Swirling luster blooms glowingly on both obverse and reverse, accenting the nicely struck devices. A pearlescent silver hue shimmers with hints of pale gold. The eye appeal is quite nice, as the surfaces are unmarred by any serious marks or ticks and the cheek is very pleasingly smooth. PCGS 43, NGC 9. The most recent example that we sold brought $5,758 in our May 2019 Regency Auction and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $7,500. PCGS# 7128 | ESTIMATE: $5,500+ LOT 280 $1 1881-S PCGS MS67+ CAC Very pretty! Exceptionally lustrous with bold, whirling cartwheel bands that roll with a vivid brilliance on both sides. Razor sharp definition in all of Liberty’s hair and cap features, and wonderful fullness of the eagle’s feathers. Bands of color encircle the obverse and a light blue and rose gold melange dusts about the upper 40% of the obverse. The color is attractive, adding to the eye appeal, but it is not monster toning, rating a 7.5+ on our 10-point scale. A strong glass reveals a few minor ticks, appropriate for the lofty grade, which are not in focal areas and do not detract from the eye appeal. PCGS 2738, NGC 4416, CAC 891. There are 299 graded MS67+ at PCGS. The average APR for the last ten PCGS/CAC MS67+s sold in LRCA Auctions is $1,944, well above the current PCGS Price Guide value of $1,200. However few were saved at the time of issue and Mint State coins become quite rare at the currently offered MS64+ level. They are a classic condition rarity in GEM grade, and are EXTREMELY RARE to find such. In the days before 3rd party certification, this coin would have been graded a GEM BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED. Considering the overall mintage, pieces with PL and DMPL surfaces are actually very scarce. This coin is a LOOKER and is begging to be in an MS63 grade holder! Very nominal contact marks and abrasions are seen in the fields, especially in light of the MS62 grade. One would expect more bagginess, but this coin is a welcome exception! Ivory white, glittering fields surround thickly frosted devices which are struck with precision detail. Lovely contrast. PCGS 35, NGC 23. Recent auction records for the date and grade have an example selling in December 2018 for $31,200 and a nice first generation PCGS issue fetching $60,000 in June 2019. LOT 310 $1 1892-S PCGS MS67+ CAC Ex Vanderbilt Collection, as noted on the PCGS insert. The 1892-S Morgan Dollar is one of the most famous condition rarities of the Morgan dollar series. Any Mint State coin is a major rarity, and the higher up the grading scale you go, the harder they are to find. This STUNNING SUPERB ranks as the SECOND FINEST GRADED BY PCGS, and is likely tied with the Eliasberg-Coronet coin for second finest known honors. Legend Rare Coin Auctions is proud to offer this exceptional quality rarity and it is the highlight of our Regency Auction. This coin was from Sotheby’s May 2018 Historic Coins and Medals auction, featuring Magnificent Morgan Silver Dollars from the Collection of Ralph and Lois Stone, where it was described as lot 103, in part as: “An amazing example. Fully struck, with hard, clean surfaces. The obverse with remarkably deep prooflike flash, the reverse somewhat shallower with areas of frost. Virtually blemish-free...The essentially white surfaces are gently overlaid with very pale golden hue. An absolutely remarkable coin.” We contend that that description does not begin to highlight the sheer brilliance of the magnificent lustrous surfaces on both sides. While elsewhere in their description, they mention some tiny ticks, they are clearly invisible to the naked eye and require a strong glass to locate. The shimmering reflection of the obverse field certainly would warrant a PL designation if the reverse had a fresher polished finish on the dies. Totally original in every sense, this coin has a stunning eye appeal that is totally different from the Eliasberg-Coronet piece that had a halo of blue and gold splashes at the rims. The FINEST 1892-S Morgan Dollars, graded by PCGS are listed as follows: 1: MS68. Jack Lee Collection, sold in Heritage, November 2005, lot 2309. 2: MS67+. The Midwest collector to Ed Milas of RARCOA; to David Carter Collection; to Dr. George Bodway; to Jack Lee; to the Ralph Stone Collection, probably via Jefferson Coin and Bullion before 1995; Sotheby’s May 2018 sale of the Ralph and Lois Stone Collection, lot 103 (housed in an old green tag PCGS MS67 CAC holder); Vanderbilt Collection. THE PRESENTLY OFFERED COIN. 3: MS67. J. Colvin Randall sold this magnificent coin to J.M. Clapp in March 1894 (Randall likely bought this coin directly at the mint at the time of issue). Passing to John H. Clapp, this coin was purchased by Louis Eliasberg as part of the Clapp estate purchase brokered by Stack’s in 1942. It sold in 2001 and placed in the Arno Collection. Arno was sold in the 2009 FUN Auction, and this coin realized $460,000 and placed into the Coronet Collection, the all time #1 PCGS Registry Set of Morgan Dollars. Appearing as lot 61 in our June 2015 Regency Sale, where it realized $446,500; Legend Rare Coin Auctions October 2017 Regency Auction, lot 384 for $470,000. 4: Palm Beach Collection, Heritage, January 2004, lot 2120; Anne Kate Collection, Stack’s Bowers, June 2012, lot 3200. The majority of the 1892-S mintage either disappeared into circulation where they would remain for many years, or if any quantity remained in government holdings were melted en masse in 1918 as part of the Pittman Act. It is also possible that a combination of those two events accounts for its Mint State rarity. As the economy fell into a deep panic in 1893, dollar mintages dropped dramatically with earlier issues not being replaced in commercial channels. Attrition from circulation and wholesale melting in 1918 leaves just 117 examples graded by PCGS and NGC combined between MS60 and MS68. PCGS 5, NGC 5, CAC 2. There are 2 coins listed on the PCGS Population Report as MS67+ and just a single MS68 graded finer. In MS67 the current CAC CPG value is listed at $514,200 and the current MS67+ Collectors Universe value is listed at $525,000. That said, this coin will certainly sell for more; especially if you demand that your Registry Set coins have CAC approval (the Jack Lee MS68 is NOT CAC approved at this time). If you are working on the FINEST of Morgan dollar sets, this is the FINEST of 92-S dollars that will be on the market anytime soon! We wish you the best of luck as bidding will certainly be intense when this coin crosses the block and a new auction record will fall when the hammer does. Congratulations in advance for elevating your collection to a legendary status. PCGS# 7218 | ESTIMATE: $550,000+ 147
