Constanța Casino

HISTORY Constanța, also known as Tomis, is the fifth largest city in Romania with 250.000 inhabitans, the main Romanian seaside resort overlooking the Black Sea. Its largest casino in Art Nouveau style is a piece of the history of early ‘900, which now lies completely abandoned. Designed by Daniel Renard and Petre Antonescu, the building was constructed in the early twentieth century and opened in 1910. For decades it was the landmark oh the Romanian gambling and not only with customers who came from all over Europe groped their luck in a place that offered different types of entertainment.

Strongly supported by the Romanian government as a symbol of social and political change in the country and expanded during the first years of the twentieth century to chase the dream of transforming the banks of the Black Sea in a kind of French Riviera Eastern Europe, the Constanta casino is often it has been regarded as the true symbol of a Romania that could have been something very different from what the past century has forced her to live.

During World War II the Casino was used as a hospital, the splendid building that was home to dance halls, gambling halls and reading toilets in which gave appointment flower Romanian intelligentsia, The Constanta has come to be devastated by the terrible bombings aircraft that have jeopardized the survival of its charm art nouveau. Transformed then as a restaurant and lounge for weddings under the Communist regime, the Constanta Casino was long abandoned by public opinion that has preferred to close their eyes to his agony and has not cried foul when, in 1990, public authorities will shut its doors because of their inability to find the right recipe to bring back its halls to the glories of the past.

The Romanian Government has in no way preserved the old structure, which since 2011 has officially on sale, and that in these five years has not, found favor with no bids. The Casino is a historical heritage for the city of Constance and for Romania, and it is hoped that the Romanian Government should intervene to restore this ancient and beautiful, historic building.
