THE BEAUTY ISSUE B MODEL: JULIA NOBIS; HAIR AND FLORAL HEADPIECE: BOB RECINE FOR RODIN; MAKEUP: DIANE KENDAL FOR ZARA BEAUTY eauty, it has been said, is only skin deep. But that notion of beauty barely scratches the surface. Beauty is an elemental part of fashion, the clay that designers reshape and remold each season into newer and ever more vital visions. Beauty is bound up in identity, with who we are and how we feel on a deeper, more profound level. It’s a ritual, an art, a way of seeing—something that reveals itself all around us if we just open ourselves up to looking for it. This issue explores beauty from a wide range of perspectives, from the best products and practices to make you feel most like yourself, to how we all reckon with beauty in a more personal way. The common denominator is that there is none—beauty means something different to each and every one of us, and how we see it and our individual relationships with it are wholly our own. During the past year, there have undoubtedly been moments when the world has seemed like a place bereft of beauty, ugly even. But then something happens to make us realize that it’s not, that even in times of darkness there is a beauty in the ways that we are all connected that never goes away. Spring is a season of renewal—this year maybe more so than in others. We wish you a healthy, happy, and beautiful one. Photograph by DANIEL JACKSON / Styling by SAMIRA NASR Veil, Eric Javits. SEE WHERE TO BUY FOR SHOPPING DETAILS makes them unique. One of the aspects of pre-pandemic life I miss the most is walking down the streets of New York City and seeing all the different, beautiful faces rushing past me. Our cover stars—Precious Lee, Hailey Bieber, Adwoa Aboah, Liu Wen, and Rianne Van Rompaey— are some of the most sought-after models in fashion. But they are also real women with real aspirations and real insecurities, and together represent a fuller picture of beauty. Beauty is not singular; it exists in each and every one of us. As Precious Lee tells our features director, Kaitlyn Greenidge: “I know I’m beautiful. I really don’t need anyone to tell me that. But you all need to tell other people that look like me that they’re beautiful too.” For this issue, we set out to look at beauty from all angles: the beauty that exists in representation; the beauty of family; the beauty found in art and in the process of creating it; and the more literal pleasure derived from a beauty routine that makes you feel good in your skin. In our Voices section, Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri and author Isabel Allende discuss the role that finding beauty has played in their work, especially during the pandemic, which has taken a deep toll on women in creative fields. Artist Betye Saar—at the peak of her powers at 94—got together with her three daughters for a conversation about how they came to view beauty as a family full of creative women. And in a powerful essay, writer Torrey Peters explores how encountering representations of beauty that we connect with can change the way we think about ourselves. Elsewhere, Daniel Jackson captures some of the most dramatic looks from one of the most vital—and beautiful—couture seasons in recent memory, while the eternally stunning Isabella Rossellini talks to Angelica Jade Bastién about how her own relationship with beauty has evolved. The issue’s music director, the legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who held an impromptu concert for people waiting in line at a vaccine distribution center in March, curated an entire playlist around the theme of beauty. Beauty is also a gift we give to ourselves. When I was 13, my dad took me to a Clinique counter to buy my first skin-care products. Since then I have never (or almost never) gone to bed without completing my nighttime skin-care routine. As I have gotten older, it has certainly evolved to include a new array of products (hello, Augustinus Bader, Biologique Recherche, and Retrouvé). But my routine remains a comforting constant. Some days it is the one thing that I am able to do for myself. I hope you hold fast to those things that create beauty in your life. 05/2120 B A Z A A R
