And again See this little simple Good thing might make your Future Bright. -ASHISH PEDNEKAR (SY BAMMC) EVERY CHILD IS FREE CHILD Kailash Satyarthi was born on the 11th of January 1954. He is the man who was awarded with the “Nobel Peace Prize of 2014”, which he shares with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan. He is known to be a hard core children’s rights activist and against child labour, who has highlighted child labor as a grave human rights issue. He is one of the very few civilians who’s works have been covered by mostly all the prominent magazines, television channels, newspapers, and radio documentaries from all over the world. He has aggressively pointed out that child labour does nothing but pushes forth poverty, population growth, illiteracy, unemployment and many other social problems. These claims of his have also been supported by several studies too. In his 34 years as an activist, Kailash has managed to free tens of thousands of young children from forced labour, who are forced into slavery by the evil men like agents, businessmen, landowners, brothel owners, etc, of our society. Today, Kailash serves as a member of a High Level Group that is formed by UNESCO on ‘Education for All’ which comprises of Presidents, Prime Ministers and UN Agency Heads. Other than that, he is also one of the very rare civilians who have been invited to several. Parliamentary Hearings and Committees in USA, Germany and UK and who have got the opportunity to address the – United Nations (UN) General Assembly International Labor Conference UN Human Rights Commission UNESCO And many more of such…

102 It is because of his undying efforts and hard-work that has forced the International Labour Organization to adopt the Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labor. And today this has become a principal guideline for governments around the world. Trivia: – Kailash has dedicated his Nobel peace prize medal to the Indian Nation and is kept at the ‘Rashtrapati Bhavan’ (president’s house) museum. The medal is 18 carats gold and weighs 196 grams. Kailash and his commitment to becoming an activist go way back to the age of six! He was born with the last name as Sharma, to a Brahman police officer and a homemaker. One day, he saw a young boy cleaning and polishing shoes outside the school with his father. This was both – a shock and an eye opener for him. Therefore, to help pay the school fees of underprivileged students like him, he formed a football (soccer) club, at such a young age to raise money. The club also used to campaign for the development of a textbook bank for these kids as well. As he grew up, he joined the Samrat Ashok Technological Institute in Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh) and attained an Electrical Engineering degree in 1974, post which he then went on to teach at the institute for two years. In 1977 he moved to New Delhi, where he started working for a publisher of literature for Arya Samaj (a Hindu reform movement). Later, to distant himself from the caste system, Kailash changed his Brahman (or high-caste) surname of “Sharma” to “Satyarthi.” The name was derived from ‘Satyarth Prakash’ (Light of Truth), which was a volume written by Dayananda Sarasvati, who is the founder of Arya Samaj in 1875. Dayananda was very well-known to urge for reforms such as – the abolition of the caste system and child marriages, and preaching of Hindu Vedas. Kailash was highly motivated and inspired by his principles, and had also established a magazine called – ‘Sangharsh Jaari Rahega’ (The Struggle Will Continue). This magazine documented the lives of vulnerable people. Now during this phase, he had become increasingly worried about the prevalence of child labour in India. So in an attempt to do something about it, Kailash started working under the support and guidance of ‘Swami Agnivesh’, who was also a follower and activist under Arya Samaj, who advocated on behalf of women and children. But after a brief period of working with him, Kailash had to part ways with his guide because his activism was more on the lines of religion, and Kailash had something else in mind. Nevertheless, considering this as an opportunity, Kailash decided to quit his career and founded the non-profit organization – “Bachpan Bachao Andolan” (BBA – “Save the Childhood Movement”) in 1980. -Kunal Nayak (BSC.IT FY)

103 How to take care of ourselves in this winter season?? Dear Reader, Hello, My name is Aakriti Singh and today I would like to suggest you all some precautions to specifically take in this winter season. Winter is coming and it's time to brace ourselves for the chilling and the harsh weather. Winter is a very beautiful season and a gift of nature but we can only enjoy this season by taking care of ourselves otherwise this blessing may prove to be dangerous for us. Almost everyone likes the winter season but everything has both negative and positive aspects so winter has also some pleasant and unpleasant aspects. When there is cool outside, we also feel cool inside. If we consider the unpleasant and negative aspects of winter season is the disease attack. So there is the need to exceptional care of our health. And there are some different diseases that may occur frequently during winter season. 1) Common cold is currently a common condition, however if not treated early it could lead to severe headache, sore throat, mucus accumulation, nasal infection. To avoid common cold always wear multiple layered clothes and also try home remedies such as gargling hot water and steam intake to keep cough and cold at bay. 2) Pneumonia is a disease that occurs easily during winter season. The early symptoms of pneumonia could be cold and it keeps getting worst, if not treated. Due to bacterial infection, it can affect you in different ways so please maintain hygiene. 3) Dry skin is a very common condition in this season, especially when the humidity is low. So, avoid hot water bath in winters or else you might feel itchy. Moisturizing your skin with a cold cream or petroleum jelly would help. 4) Flu is indeed the most commonly faced health issue in this season. Ensure cleanliness and wash your hands before having food. And also, cover your ears and wear socks to keep your body warm. In short there are some important precautions to fight against winter diseases. Such as, wear extra layers of clothes to keep your body warm, maintain hygiene, moisturize yourself frequently, avoid consuming cold water, avoid hot water bath, and eat a healthy diet. At last I will conclude my suggestion by saying please follow all the precautions in this winter season carefully and thankyou so much for being a polite reader. I pray this winter be gentle, safe and a kind season of rest from the wheel of the mind. Aakriti Singh (FY BSCIT)

104 COLLEGE LIFE. What is college Life? This very word means so much to the ones who have passed out of college. The memories, the friends we’ve made, those beautiful smiling faces of our beloved teachers and many more can be added to this list. To me college life is not just these memories, but it is also that wonderful cup of tea from the canteen early morning, that smiling face of uncle who loves to serve us all with delicious snacks. It is that awesome talks and discussions in the cafeteria. It is that moment of fun and childish things we do in class, like singing in a free lecture, sitting in the library and reading the newspapers with my best friend. It is the whispering in class while the lecture is on. It is the wonderful time we all have spent, right from our fresher’s day dancing to the songs like there is no end to that day, to hosting events and being upset with each other. But the greatest thing I take pride in, is that no matter what the situation is or has been many times we fail in things, still we have each other’s back, we rise again. We don’t just make connections for life we create a relationship. Today, when I write this essay, I write it with a heavy heart. Not because I have passed out, or because I’m going to graduate very soon. But it is because I and my fellow classmates our going to graduate online. We have already lost a year due to this pandemic. Yet somehow, we also seem to known how to make the most of it. I think maybe there are some perks of being a management student. Today I won’t be taking just these memories. I have many more things to take along with me as I graduate. My teachers have not only thought me the syllabus of my course, but they have done more than that. They are the reason I am not shy anymore, the reason I can speak in front of a huge crowd. I have not only been taught these subjects, but I have been moulded into a person to work in any line of field. I will take with me their life lessons, values and above everything else their smiling faces in my mind and heart. We all have a different perspective of college life. Well, this is my experience and I don’t want a thing to be changed. Not even the fights and arguments we all have had. Cause at the end, it is said we learn from our mistakes. A place where a group of strangers meet, that turns into a beautiful family in the end. CRESSIDA FERNANDES (TYBMS)

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT 105 Sustainability is the buzzword these days. But, what it means, what do we need to do and why is it so important are some of the questions which come foremost in our minds. Most of us relate sustainability to the environment. This, of course, is partially correct, but it is much more than that; it covers a broad spectrum. “Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” Sustainability covers the planet as a whole, all its living beings, their well-being, peace and prosperity, maintenance of the rivers, oceans, mountains, forests, and their coexisting in harmony. THE PILLARS OF SUSTAINABILITY The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people. Social sustainability has many dimensions but the chief among them are poverty alleviation, equity, removal of discrimination and gender equality. Economic sustainability is about economic growth through sustainable development, innovation, resilient infrastructure, sustainable production, and sustainable consumption. Environmental sustainability is about caring for nature, its flora and fauna, biodiversity, oceans, rivers, mountains, and forests with avoidance of overexploitation of resources. The United Nations recognized the need for holistic sustainability, that is sustainability for all the 3 pillars, which is important for preserving the planet, ensuring happiness and removing misery. The three pillars of Sustainability – Society, Environment, Economy (Maricopa Community Colleges) 17 SG Framed by UN in 2015 No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good health-and Well Being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clear Water and Sanitization, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Reduce Inequality, Responsible and Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life on land, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions Partnership for the Goals India's SD Goals and Achievement Sashakt Bharat - Sabal Bharat (Empowered and Resilient India): India has successfully lifted more than 271 million people out of multidimensional poverty through economic growth and empowerment.
