16 The month of December brings a lot of warmth, hope, and glad tidings. Christmas, Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The term Christmas means the mass on Chrit’s day. Christmas has been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non- Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of Merry gifts. Christmas To spread the message of love and good cheer, the student of ZSCT’s Thakur Shyamnarayan Degree College, Mumbai, organised a party on December of 24, 2021, to celebrate the wonderful Christmas spirit. The decorations did by the student was really eye catching, the efforts they took, really showed up. The party had food, drinks and singing of carols; after the lockdown, this was the first time when all the students came along and partied together, and had a great time.

MICROBIOLOGY 18 Sergei Winogradsky SERGEI NIKOLAIEVICH WINOGRADSKY (1 SEPTEMBER 1856 – 25 FEBRUARY 1953) was a Russian microbiologist, ecologist and soil scientist who pioneered the cycle-of-life concept. WINOGRADSKY DISCOVERED THE FIRST KNOWN FORM OF LITHOTROPHY DURING HIS RESEARCH WITH BEGGIATOA IN 1887. HE REPORTED THAT BEGGIATOA OXIDIZED HYDROGEN SULFIDE (H2S) AS AN ENERGY SOURCE AND FORMED INTRACELLULAR SULFUR DROPLETS. THIS RESEARCH PROVIDED THE FIRST EXAMPLE OF LITHOTROPHY, BUT NOT AUTOTROPHY. DISCOVERIES Winogradsky discovered various biogeochemical cycles and parts of these cycles. These discoveries include: His work on bacterial sulfide oxidation for which he first became renowned, including the first known form of lithotrophy (in Beggiatoa). His work on the Nitrogen cycle including The identification of the obligate anaerobe Clostridium pasteurianum is a free living microbe capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and not living in legume root nodules. MICROBIOLOGY 19 Robert Koch HEINRICH HERMANN ROBERT KOCH (11 DECEMBER 1843 – 27 MAY 1910) was a German physician and microbiologist. AS THE DISCOVERER OF THE SPECIFIC CAUSATIVE AGENTS OF DEADLY INFECTIOUS DISEASES INCLUDING TUBERCULOSIS, CHOLERA (THOUGH THE BACTERIUM ITSELF WAS DISCOVERED BY FILIPPO PACINI IN 1854), AND ANTHRAX, HE IS REGARDED AS ONE OF THE MAIN FOUNDERS OF MODERN BACTERIOLOGY. AS SUCH HE IS POPULARLY NICKNAMED THE FATHER OF MICROBIOLOGY (WITH LOUIS PASTEUR), AND AS THE FATHER OF MEDICAL BACTERIOLOGY. DISCOVERIES His discovery of the anthrax bacterium (Bacillus anthracis) in 1876 is considered as the birth of modern bacteriology. His discoveries directly provided proofs for the germ theory of diseases, and the scientific basis of public health. While working as a private physician, Koch developed many innovative techniques in microbiology. He was the first to use oil immersion lens, condenser, and microphotography in microscopy. His invention of bacterial culture method using agar and glass plates (later developed as Petri dish by his assistant Julius Richard Petri) made him the first to grow bacteria in the laboratory. In appreciation of his works, he was appointed as government advisor at the Imperial Health Office in 1880, promoted to a senior executive position (Geheimer Regierungsrat) in 1882, Director of Hygienic Institute and Chair (Professor of hygiene) of the Faculty of MeP AdGicE i2ne at Berlin University in 1885, and the Royal Prussian Institute for Infectious Diseases (later renamed Robert Koch Institute after his death) in 1891.
20 MICROBIOLOGY Kary Mullis KARY BANKS MULLIS (DECEMBER 28, 1944 – AUGUST 7, 2019) was an American biochemist. IN RECOGNITION OF HIS ROLE IN THE INVENTION OF THE POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION (PCR) TECHNIQUE, HE SHARED THE 1993 NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY WITH MICHAEL SMITH AND WAS AWARDED THE JAPAN PRIZE IN THE SAME YEAR. PCR BECAME A CENTRAL TECHNIQUE IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, DESCRIBED BY THE NEW YORK TIMES AS \"HIGHLY ORIGINAL AND SIGNIFICANT, VIRTUALLY DIVIDING BIOLOGY INTO THE TWO EPOCHS OF BEFORE PCR AND AFTER PCR.\" MULLIS ATTRACTED CONTROVERSY FOR DENYING HUMANS' ROLE IN CLIMATE CHANGE AND FOR EXPRESSING DOUBTS THAT HIV CAUSES AIDS. PCR AND OTHER INVENTIONS Main articles: Taq Polymerase and History of polymerase chain reaction In 1983, Mullis was working for Cetus Corporation as a chemist. Mullis recalled told it, while driving in the vicinity of his country home in Mendocino County (with his girlfriend, who also was a chemist at Cetus) he had the idea to use a pair of primers to bracket the desired DNA sequence and to copy it using DNA polymerase; a technique that would allow rapid amplification of a small stretch of DNA and become a standard procedure in molecular biology laboratories. Longtime professional benefactor and supervisor Thomas White reassigned Mullis from his usual projects to concentrate on PCR full-time after the technique was met with skepticism by their colleagues. [11][14] Mullis succeeded in demonstrating PCR on December 16, 1985, but the staff remained circumspect as he continued to produce ambiguous results amid alleged methodological problems, including a perceived lack of \"appropriate controls and repetition.\" In his Nobel Prize lecture, he remarked that the December 16 breakthrough did not make up for his girlfriend breaking up with him: \"I was sagging as I walked out to my little silver Honda Civic. Neither [assistant] Fred, empty Beck's bottles, nor the sweet smell of the dawn of the age of PCR could replace Jenny. I was lonesome.\" POA tGhE e3r Cetus scientists who were regarded as \"top-notch experimentalists\",[14] including Randall Saiki, Henry Erlich, and Norman Arnheim, were placed on parallel PCR projects to work on determining if PCR could amplify a specific human gene (betaglobin) from genomic DNA. Saiki generated the needed data and Erlich authored the first paper to include utilization of the technique,

MONTH “CERTIFICATE COURSE” ON “UNIVERSAL HUMAN VALUES”
22 This course aims at making the students conscious about the Universal Human Values which is an integral part of our lives in a manner without ignoring other aspects that are needed for a learner’s personality development. Universal Human Values are the values that human beings cherish and hold in common consciously and otherwise in most of the places, times and practices them. The present course deals with meaning, purpose and relevance of universal human values and how to inculcate and practice them consciously to be a good human being and realize one’s potential. By the end of this course the learner will be able to know the importance of values in individual, social circle, career path and in personal life. They will also gain an insight into the lives of great and successful people who followed and practiced human values and self- actualization through their case studies. Students will realize their potential as human beings and understand the world empathetically and maturely. NATIONAL LEVEL SHORT FILM MAKING Short Films are a brilliant way to express one’s ideas, thought process and showcase creativity. It is one such medium through which one can display any story to the world whether fiction or reality. To introduce the power of this great medium to students, In January 2022, Thakur Shyamnarayan Degree College’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), along with their BA in Multimedia and Mass Communication department organised a national-level short film-making festival. Invitations were sent to a plethora of junior colleges as this was a junior college exclusive event and all participating colleges would receive a trophy.
23 The theme for the festival was “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” and participants could choose to present their work in a variety of different categories such as feature films, documentaries or mobile films. The festival aimed to celebrate the spirit of Indian independence, culture and democracy as well as give a platform for young and creative minds to flourish. A short film is typically easier and less expensive to make but there are a number of additional benefits for making a short film to the filmmaker, the audience, to society, and for studios scouting for good material. Making a short film allows the filmmaker to dive into a subject or story cinematically without investing a lot of time and energy into the project. There is always room to expand it later. The medium of short film gives audiences an access to topics and issues they otherwise would not know about. Sometimes, even within a small municipality, members of a small community are not aware of issues that directly affect them. A filmmaker can put forth these issues in a short film, bringing awareness to the issue and helping the community rally for change. The BAMMC Co- Ordinator and the Convener of the event Dr. Amruta Pawar with her team Ms. Tanvi Limbachiya, Ms. Duheeta Joshi, Ms. Shipra Srivastava and Ms. Siddhi Parab under the kind guidance of Honorable Principal Dr. Sharad Phulari Sir organized this mesmerizing short film festival where the students from different colleges got a platform to portray their inner talent. Short films bring collective awareness, which increases the potential for change, sometimes in the form of legislation, other times in the form of personal behaviour. Short films can be both entertaining and educational, which is a powerful mix and can expand one’s life by expanding one’s awareness.
