General information about TAY NINH PROVINCE Tay Ninh is a province located in the Eastern South Vietnam with the East bordering Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc provinces, the South bordering Ho Chi Minh City and Long An Province, the West and the North bordering the Kingdom of Cambodia with a long border of 240 km and 02 international border gates of Moc Bai and Xa Mat, together with 04 main border gates and 10 auxiliary border gates. The province has 02 important traffic routes: Asian Highway (National Highway 22) and National Highway 22B. Tay Ninh is considered as a province that plays an important role in the development of the Southern Key Economic Zone. Special National Historical Relic OFFICE FOR SOUTH VIETNAM BASE Office for South Vietnam Base Historical Relic (Tan Tien hamlet, Tan Lap commune, Tan Bien district): is a historical relic classified as a Special National Relic according to Decision No. 548 / QD-TTg dated 10 May 5, 2012 by the Prime Minister which includes Office for South Vietnam Base, South Viet Nam National Front for Liberation Base, Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam Base. During the resistance war against the American Empire, Tay Ninh was a very important strategic location with mountains and forest extending from the Southern Central region to the Southwestern delta, especially this is the province with the people who are ethnic groups with patriotic tradition. That was the condition for the Central government to direct the formation of many resistance bases, build a system of continuous bases to create a solid position for the resistance forces. From February 1962, all agencies of Office for South Vietnam moved to Northern Tay Ninh Base Area (now known as Office for South Vietnam Special National Relic). Office for South Vietnam had successfully completed its duties and successfully led the resistance war against the American Empire to save the country. Office for South Vietnam Base is an important evidence of our nation’s history of the struggle to defend the country, led by the Party and President Ho Chi Minh. 6 | TAY NINH TOURIST GUIDE
TYPICAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS Tay Ninh Historical Relic SOUTH VIET NAM NATIONAL FRONT FOR LIBERATION BASE The base is located in Tan Lap commune, Tan Bien district, about 54 km away from the center of Tay Ninh City by road, and 10 km away from Office for South Vietnam Base Historical Relic and this was a political organization established with the aim of uniting the people of South Vietnam to fight against the American Empire to save the country, to overthrow the puppet regime, proceeding to unify Vietnam. Historical Relic PROVISIONAL REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH VIETNAM BASE The relic is located in Tan Lap commune, Tan Bien district. The relic is located about 42 km away from the centre of Tay Ninh city to the North where the South Vietnam National Congress was elected and was held by South Vietnam Liberation Front. Together with the Front, the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam had completed excellently the mission in gaining the independence for the country. TYPICAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS Tay Ninh Historical Relic SECURITY BOARD OF CENTRAL OFFICE FOR SOUTH VIETNAM BASE Located at Bay Bau hamlet, Tan Lap commune, Tan Bien district, about 50 km away from Tay Ninh city to the North. For 15 years of the wars, Security Board of the Central Office for South Vietnam had completed successfully the mission of ensuring the absolute security for the nerve-centre organizations of the South Vietnam revolution. Historical Relic TUA HAI VICTORY LOCATION Located in Tua Hai hamlet, Dong Khoi commune, Chau Thanh district, Tay Ninh province, on Highway 22B, 7 km away from Tay Ninh city to the Northwest where in the night of the 25th and the dawn on 26/01/1960 at 0:30 on 26/01/1960, the Region armed force together with the army and people of Tay Ninh made the Victory of Tua Hai, opening Dong Khoi Armed Movement in the Southeast Vietnam in the resistance war against the American Empire. 10 | TAY NINH TOURIST GUIDE
TYPICAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS Tay Ninh Historical Relic TAY NINH PROVINCE PARTY COMMITTEE BASE IN BOI LOI Located in Trang Sa hamlet, Don Thuan commune, Trang Bang district, Tay Ninh province, it is about 16 km away from the centre of Trang Bang town, about 40 km away from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City as the crow flies. Boi Loi is the traditional name of a wood tree grown naturally to form a forest with the width of nearly 200 km2. Boi Loi is the contact centre to North Tay Ninh Base in the resistance wars. In the time of Republic of Vietnam, this was the base of Tay Ninh Province Party Committee and the main people’ agency of the province. This was also a part of the famous “iron triangle” in the war. Boi Loi Relic was recognized by Ministry of Culture and Information (now known as Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) as a historical and cultural relic according to Decision No. 02/1999/QD-BVHTT dated 26/01/1999. TYPICAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS Tay Ninh This is a famous landscape and historical relic complex in the South Vietnam, about 11 km away from Tay Ninh city. Ba Den mountain has the height of 986 m, which is the highest mountain in Southeast Region with the system of pristine caves, pagodas of hundreds of years old and mighty natural landscape as well as the legend about sacred Ba Den. Annually, this place holds such festivals as Ba Den mountain Spring festival, Dong Kim Quang festival, Ba Den birthday anniversary and many other entertainment activities to together create an interesting spiritual tourism and outdoor tourism destination to attract annually more than 2.5 millions tourists to visit and go on a pilgrimage. Architectural art relic &BINH THANH ANCIENT TOWER CHOT MAT ANCIENT TOWER Binh Thanh Ancient Tower Binh Thanh Ancient Tower (Binh Phu hamlet, Binh Thanh commune, Trang Bang district) and Chot Mat Ancient Tower (Xom Moi hamlet, Tan Phong commune, Tan Bien district) are the two ancient towers in Tay Ninh which still remain relatively intact. These are precious ancient architectural relics; architectural art works that mark a civilization of humanity more than 1,000 years ago. TYPICAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS Tay Ninh Holy See Cao Dai Tay Ninh One of outstanding destinations to attract the tourists in Tay Ninh is Cao Dai Holy See where is the worship place of a religion originated from our country with unique architecture and a monumental art works with the harmonious combination of the national architecture and Western architecture to have both the magnificent appearance of the Western architecture and the mysterious appearance of the Oriental architecture. The Holy See was built since 1933 and officially inaugurated in 1955. The Holy See is located in an area of 1 km2 and about 7 km away from Tay Ninh city to the East. Visiting this place, the tourists can enjoy the unique architecture of the Holy See - the holy land of Cao Dai Tay Ninh Religion. Thien Lam pagoda (Go Ken pagoda) Built in the early twentieth century, Go Ken Pagoda is one of the ancient pagodas in Tay Ninh. In 1925, Superior Buddhist Monk Thich Tu Phong, a disciple of Thich Tri Luong and his disciples built Thien Lam Pagoda (Go Ken Pagoda) with stone foundation, masonry walls, tile roof which has the length of 30 m and width of more than 11 m. Columns and beams are cast in reinforced cement. The front has a terrace. Door is made of square wooden bars with the fastening pin above to prevent it from being lifted up. In 1970, the pagoda was restored to be more spacious. In July 2007, Venerable Thich Thien Nghia who presided the pagoda ordered to renovate and build more new works to create a new look for the pagoda to be worthy of a beauty spot in the province. In front of the pagoda yard, the statue of Ni Guan Yin Bodhisattva is deep in religious contemplation under the shadow of the Bodhi Tree: a 25 m-high statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is standing on 7 m-high dragon; Buddha statue entered nirvana is 25 m long. TYPICAL TOURISM DESTINATIONS Tay Ninh National Park Lo Go - Xa Mat Lo Go - Xa Mat National Park is about 55 km away from Tay Ninh city and located on 4 communes of Tan Bien district, Tay Ninh province. With the ecosystem transited between the Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen), Southeast Region and Mekong River Delta Region, this place conserves many wood trees, herbal trees, birds, animals, rare and valuable fish, typically including: Techicai Sitan, Rose-wood, one-hundred disease curing tree, red-headed crane, pygathrix nigripes, Leptoptilos dubius, Ciconia episcopus, Physignathus cocincinus. Dau Tieng Lake Dau Tieng lake is located in the East of Tay Ninh province, about 25 km away from Tay Ninh city and located in the tourism route of Tay Ninh city - Cao Dai Tay Ninh Holy See - Ba Den mountain. Dau Tieng lake is the biggest artificial irrigation works in Vietnam and Southeast Asia with the capacity of 1.5 billion m3 of water to provide irrigation water for Tay Ninh province, Binh Duong, Ho Chi Minh City. In addition to the economic values, Dau Tieng lake is also well-known for being the lake Sea of Tay Ninh with the surface water area of 27,000 ha, oriented to invest and develop ecological tourism. In the lake, there are many islands and peninsula covered with the green colour of forests, and the most special one is Nhim island. To visit the island, it takes only 30 minutes by ship, boat and this place is still pristine without external impacts, therefore it is very suitable for the tourists who love to discover the new and strange things and live with the nature. Moc Bai International Border Gate Moc Bai is the biggest International road border gate in the South Vietnam, on the Vietnam - Cambodia border route on land. Moc Bai International border gate is not only the gateway of Tay Ninh Province in promoting the commercial and tourism exchange with Cambodia but also plays an important role in external economic construction and development. Moc Bai International Border has the special advantage because of located on Asian Highway (the road starting from Myanmar through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and ended in Guangxi, China). Ba Den mountain Festival “Ba Den mountain Spring Festival” On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, the cool atmosphere of the Spring, tourists from everywhere come to Ba Den Mountain to pray for peace. Especially, on the 4th of Lunar New Year annually, at Ba Den Mountain National Tourism Area, it takes place the opening ceremony of “Ba Den Mountain Spring Festival” with many entertainment activities. FESTIVAL Tay Ninh Ba Den birthday anniversary The Holy Mother Ba Den Mountain Held on the 4th, 5th and 6th of Lunar May every year (the main festival day is on 5th). In the days of Ba Birthday Anniversary, there are many traditional art performances such as Bong Roi Dance, Mam Vang Dance, Chap Dia-Nang Singing, Unicorn-Lion-Dragon dance, traditional martial art performance etc. to create the typical atmosphere of a traditional festival. Festival of Cao Dai Tay Ninh religion There are 2 big and typical festivals of Duc Chi Ton Birthday Annivesary (January 8th) and Hoi Yen Dieu Tri Cung Festival (on Lunar August 15th). FESTIVAL Tay Ninh Kim Quang cave traditional Festival Kim Quang Cave - a big rock cave located in the Southeast of Ba Den Mountain at the elevation of about 150 m where was chosen as the base of the district party committee and district armed forces of Toa Thanh district (now known as Hoa Thanh District) in the resistance war against the American Empire. Kim Quang Cave Festival is held on the 14th of Lunar January. The festival is held in Ba Mountain Spring Festival season and is the occasion for the young people of Tay Ninh to remind the revolutionary tradition and commemorate the heroes who sacrificed for the liberation of the country. Festival is maintained continuously every year (from 1983 to present), and attracts strongly visitors and is the place with the traditional meanings of “returning to the roots”. Quan Lon Tra Vong Festival In Tay Ninh, Quan Lon Tra Vong worshiping has been a special form of traditional belief for a long time. So far, the death anniversary of Mr. Huynh Cong Gian – Quan Lon Tra Vong has become a real traditional festival with the participation of many people inside and outside the province, held on the 15th and 16th of Lunar March every year. On festival days, there are Boi Singing and many traditional cultural activities. Worshiping Anniversary rituals are nearly the same as those of Communal House worshiping festival (Ky Yen Festival) in the South Vietnam and Tay Ninh. FESTIVAL Tay Ninh Ky Yen Festival at Gia Loc communal house Trang Bang district Ky Yen festival is held annually at Gia Loc communal house on 14th, 15th, 16th of Lunar March. Ky Yen festival means the festival long for peace - Festival to wish for peace for the country and people, happiness, prosperity for every families, wish for good weather, good soil conditions and happy people. Ky Yen festival is held officially with many rituals conserved and developed gradually. The festival is a big day of the local people and the occasion for traditional cultural exchange of the community to together look back the history through cultural activities such as discussions about country’s affairs, village’s affairs, worship for good harvest, peace and prosperity for the people. TRADITIONAL TRADE VILLAGES TTaayy NNiinnhh Trang Bang dew-wetted rice paper Dew-Wetted rice paper is one of the unique dish in the cuisine of Tay Ninh. It needs to do many meticulous processes to make dew-wetted rice papers. Ingredients to create a dew-wetted rice paper includes rice flour and salt and the rice paper of this kind is thicker than other kinds. Rice papers are mainly produced in Loc Du quarter, Trang Bang hamlet, Trang Bang district. This dish is not only famous in the country but also exported to foreign countries. “Dew-wetted rice paper” is the speciality created by the creativeness and labour of Tay Ninh people and has become the pride of the people in Trang Bang. Trang Bang dew-wetted rice paper production trade was recognized by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National intangible cultural heritage at Decision No. 3465/QD-BVHTTDL dated 13/10/2015. Palm-Leaf Conical Hat Production Trade (Non La) Palm-leaf conical hat production trade at Tay Ninh has been existed for a long time. Today, there are many places specialized in producing “palm-leaf conical” hats such as An Phu hamlet, An Hoa (Trang Bang district), Ninh Son ward (Tay Ninh city). They produce all kinds of hats such as: Bai Tho Hue, Binh Dinh, Embroidered Hats, thick hats, thin hats which are famous in the Central Vietnam. In Tay Ninh, it is not easy to find Corypha lecomtei leaves, fringes - the main materials to make Bai Tho hats, however, there is a rich source of invory bamboo leaves, Rhapis excelsa leaves. Tay Ninh people choose Rhapis excelsa laves as the main material for producing hats. This is a ordinary hats for the labour and produced with massive scale to sell which is also called “commercial hats”. TRADITIONAL TRADE VILLAGES Tay Ninh BAMBO AND RATTAN VILLAGE Bamboo and rattan village has been existed and developed for more than 40 years in Tay Ninh, typically in two communes of Long Thanh Trung and Long Thanh Bac of Hoa Thanh district. Incense production trade According to some documents, the history of incense production trade in Tay Ninh is closely linked to the development history of Cao Dai Religion and Buddhism, it means that this trade has been existed for more than 90 years. At present, in some places in Tay Ninh, this trade is still maintained and developed such as Hoa Thanh district and Duong Minh Chau district with the participation of about 300 persons. 36 | TAY NINH TOURIST GUIDE
TRADITIONAL TRADE VILLAGES Tay Ninh Forging Trade This trade was started in Loc Trac at the end of 19th Century and formed by Mr. Vo Van Son who was born in Dinh Tuong (My Tho today) who came to settle and transmit to his children and neighbours. This place have many households who have been in this trade for hundreds of years. Although there are many blacksmith’s but basically these blacksmith’s mainly focus in producing some particular specialized items such as: some blacksmith’s are specialized in producing hoes while others specialized in producing sickles or knives, ploughshares, etc. Some blacksmith’s produce many different items but they are mainly agricultural tools and household items. The products from this trade village are famous not only in the province but also many other neighbouring provinces.
