McNeal’s first glimpse was the simplicity of the sport in which the riders various chal- lenges to overcome and after careful surveillance decided on a technique, he thought, would conquer the log in his path. In the mid-1970s, the top competition was recognized as Curt Comer Sr. and Curt Comer Jr. McNeal was in awe of the control and precision that Curt Sr. showed while on a motor- cycle. With introductions at this event, a lifelong friendship was formed and the Comer family assisted with mentoring the McNeal boys in “all things trials,” and the McNeal family joined the South Eastern Trials Riders Association (STRA), which in 1974 had a total of 73 mem- bers who competed. Through- out the next decade, McNeal purchased a conglomeration of bikes ranging from Yahmaha, to Bulltaco and several in between as his sons rose to the top of the Expert class within the STRA in a matter of three years. McNeal competed in his first NATC national championship during an event in Kansas City, which is where McNeal and his sons saw firsthand what the national competitors were like. McNeal took a hard crash on his Suzuki and landed in an ines- capable ditch.
